Default Shield mag release

I've owned my Shield 9mm for about 3 years now and it has been my EDC since new. I have used a DeSantis thumb break scabbard (left hand) every day of those 3 years. Yesterday I had something unnerving occur. I felt some unusual movement under my shirt and when I put my hand over the spot in question I realized that the magazine was loose in the mag well. After seeing to the problem in a restroom I cut my day short and went home to further investigate.

What I noticed right off was that the holster does not cover the mag release - remember, left handed holster. I really like the holster and would rather not replace it.

Any input will be greatly appreciated.

All this leads me to my questions - Can the mag release button on a Shield 9mm be moved to the opposite side of the pistol? Will a gunsmith be willing to do this, or will I have to see if S&W will do it? I won't even attempt this myself - arthritis.

One problem in three years? I don't think I'd let that bother me.
It could be that you brushed against something just right and hit the release button. Now you know to be aware of it.

Looking at my Shields (9MM & .45 Auto), the mag release is not reversible.

I am left handed and have this holster. Covers the mag release and is comfortable.

Unfair to lefties. I can switch the mag release on the .22 Compact but not the Shield.

I'd give it a day or two with some testing on trying to reproduce the event.

One incident like this is one too many. I'd hate to have this happen if I ever had to defend myself. Imagine feeling like a complete fool in the moment before you die, that would be a really bad day.

I'll have to start looking for a new owb holster.Any suggestions?

Just talked to a rep at S&W yesterday and the mag release can not be swapped, so I'm like the rest, maybe look into another holster.

I too am a lefty, I use the DeSantis mini scabbard holster for my Shield. I have not had an issue like the bobknn, but it sure would suck big time to draw you weapon an not have a mag. Hmmm this calls for some investigation to see if I can duplicate what the bobkin experienced. Do you know which mag you had in the gun at the time? (7 or 8 round) Just curious.
