Default 40c Weak Recoil Spring?

My 40c functions perfectly so this may be a non-issue. But when I do a press check, if I release the slide too gently it doesn't return to battery. If I do it slingshot style and release it, it works fine. A gentle push is all it takes to fix it, but I can't help wondering if I should replace the spring. Any thoughts?

My 40c does the same thing. Never had a problem with it though.

Reminds me of an old Henny Youngman joke:

Guy goes to a doctor, (Henny wiggles his arm) and says, "It hurts when I do that."

Doctor says, "Don't do that!"

Badum-tish!

All seriousness aside, when I reached 6000 rounds with my 40c, I replaced my recoil spring assembly as a precaution, even though it was working fine. As far as I can tell, it is a very robust component, so unless your 40c is having problems when you fire it, your press check experience should not be a concern.

If the press check continues to bother you, Dr. swsig says, "Don't do that!"

Enjoy your 40c. It's a great gun.

Mine does the same thing with its KKM 40-9 conversion barrel. It probably means you have a barrel that fits tight (which should mean good accuracy). If the pistol functions properly I wouldn't mess with it. If it malfunctions then start adjusting. If you watch the fitting videos for apex barrels they want people to adjust the barrel so that it takes just a little bit of manual force to go into battery when doing a press check like you describe.

Thanks for the responses. I didn't really think I was a problem as I've put several hundred rounds through it without a hitch. I just couldn't help thinking the spring was a little weak. I bought it used so I have no idea how many rounds it has fired.

Understand Mark40 just went through the same thought process on a M&P45c, that I just bought used. Ordered a spare spring kit just in case, but gun works fine. Love the M&P Compact series have 3 or the 4 models. Looking for one in 357 Sig.

I have to ask, where is the best place to get recoil springs for the M&P 40 FS?

My M&P 9, 40, 45, and 357 all do the same thing. It's a non issue. It's from the casing binding on the breech face as the bbl begins to drop. When pulling the slide back just enough to do a press check, there is not enough spring tension yet to overcome the casing trying to slide back up the breech face and behind the ejector. As long as your gun returns to full battery when releasing the slide from its full rearward position, then you are good to go.

Call S&W Customer Service. After my M&P 40c hit 6000 rounds (and was still working perfectly), I called to ask if it was a good idea to get a new recoil spring assembly. The CS rep said it might be a good thing to do, and sent me a new one, no charge. Can't beat S&W as a place to get a new recoil spring!

They sent me a free striker for my 40c. They asked me what color it was and said mine was an older one. Not sure if it was the design or material that changed. I even told them I got it used.
