I'm looking for a Kydex or hybrid IWB single clip holster for a Shield 9mm. I want one that covers the mag release at least on the inside / body side.

I think nearly all IWB holsters cover that much of the pistol. They all typically have more material on the inside than outside, to keep the pistol away from the skin, and it's corrosive oils. I'm thinking you'd probably have to search hard to find one that doesn't cover the safety.

I thought the same thing, and then reached around and found the Alien Gear I'm wearing does not.

I think because the mag release is right at the trigger guard they cut the backing just below it so you can get a good purchase when drawing. I Believe if the backing covered the mag release I wouldn't be able to get my middle finger right under the trigger guard where it belongs. I don't think I would want the backing to cover that area, and have to re-grip after drawing.

Just the opposite is true. Most holsters I've seen do not cover the mag release. A lot of holster makers claim the Kydex against the mag release button is more likely to release the mag than your body will. I disagree with that and I think the holster isn't made correctly if it's not protecting the mag release from being depressed.

FWIW, I tend to agree with what the holster makers told you. I was checking out mine, and the space there, creates a sizable gap between me and the mag release, and I was thinking if the backer were there or a piece of kydex, it might press the mag release when I sat against the back of a seat, like when driving.

I honestly doubt it would be an issue, if there was a backer or kydex there, but I know it has never been an issue (for me) having the space there. As I said my concern would be more getting a proper grip while drawing. I tried a Sneeky pete when I first started concealed carry, and that was a problem, I couldn't get my fingers around the grip until it was out of the holster...didn't feel like a good idea.

If you are like me, you'll have to try it first hand to know for sure...and it may work great for you, and not for someone else.

I've got a kydex IWB, from CYA, found on amazon, with the 15 degree cant was around 20 buck if I remember correctly.

Iv'e carried IWB for years with various autos and have never had an issue with engaging the mag release. YMMV.
