Default My Search for the Baddest Comp Trigger Out There

I'm seriously thinking about picking up the new(ish) 2.0. The M&P looks great, feels freaking amazing in my hand, and has a great track record. This will be my first handgun, other than 1911s, in several years and its purpose will be a range toy.

Now, I don't want a gun with a 6+ pound pull weight so I need to get it down, way down. I found kits from Apex and Dawson Precision that might fit the bill, but I was hoping those of you who have been around this particular firearm longer than I have might recommend some very good, very solid competition-oriented triggers with SIGNIFICANTLY reduced trigger weights. Ideally I need to be under 3lbs. I know, a tall order. But thanks to a lucky shot from a bad guy in a sandy place this is not an option. I have about 60% of the strength you have in your hand so a 3lb pull for me is like a 5lb pull for you. Am I asking too much?

I've seen somme of these advertised weights and they encourage me, but I'm really more interested in realistic numbers that can be backed up with real world experience from people who aren't paid by the companies doing the advertising. I don't mind dropping $300 on a trigger, but it better work like it's supposed to. So, I need to know:
1. Is my goal is even attainable?
2. If so, what is the lightest triggers that you know of?
3.How reliable are they?
4. What are your real life experiences with your recommendation(s)?

Thanks very much for your help, ideas, recommendations, and wisdom. I really hope this works out and I'm a S&W owner very soon.

I wish I knew more. I think you should call Apex and see what they say.
If you were into Glocks I would tell you to call Charlie Vaneck. He could help you out. I have one of his and it's amazing.

Your goal is attainable and not too hard to do.

I have a full size 45 and have installed the Apex Forward Set Sear (FSS) trigger. It made a dramatic improvement. It reduced the reset distance and virtually eliminated the over travel.

I used the Apex trigger return spring during installation. This means mine is a little heavier than you like. I just measured it and it's breaking a consistent 5lbs 15oz. I'm told, if you use the spring that comes with the gun, it's lighter. Also, a little polishing on the sear, a little adjustment of the trigger bar loop, will all help lighten it.

A gun smith should be able to get it right where you want it.

Totally possible.
I started with a performance center M&P9 (the ported 4.25).
I put in a apex polymer trigger (40$), a APEX ram reset assist (25$), competition spring kit (20$), some work on the sear (filing and polishing), polishing USB, trigger bar ....
That gun comes with an overtravel screw.
I got literally no reset, very little travel and pre travel, smooth crisp predictable, audible and tactile reset, 2.5 lbs trigger. Just a dream.

The new 2.0 has a different trigger bar and sear engagement than the original version. I think new trigger parts have not been designed and manufactured--yet.

Upgrading an original version 5" barreled M&P with Apex parts would be doable now and with the right springs, <3# is obtainable. For a range gun, get the longest barrel you can.

Thanks for all the quick replies and good info. I should have put in my original post that I'm not dead set on the 2.0 at all. I held both at Bass Pro yesterday and I like the texture of the 2.0 better but I'm smitten with both. And, as you said, there are a lot more parts available for the Gen 1.

The FSS kit will give you ~4.5# using the factory trigger return spring, feels like a SAO trigger - short, crisp, great reset. Don't mess with the trigger bar loop, unless necessary.

Exactly! I have the FSS kit with factory spring in an M&P Pro. Just over 4lb pull. I also have over 500 rounds through it, and it has become my favorite pistol to carry or shoot.

I have the Performance Center 9L, I put in the Apex Flat Faced FSS, but kept the PC Striker block and spring, and I have 3lbs 9oz, with short pre travel, and close to no over travel, with the silver spring.

You should call Apex and tell them what you need, they can probably get you what you need.

Any competent gunsmith should be able to get your M&P trigger down to 2.5-3 pounds.

While working the chrono stage at various USPSA matches, I've shot dozens of M&P's with 1 pound triggers.

Personally, my M&P 9L has an Apex sear, RAM and competition spring kit installed by me. After a bit of polishing and fitting, I got it down to 3 pounds easily.
