S&W Shield No. 3

Added a 3rd Shield to the stable, this time a Performance Center 9mm. I thought about waiting until the Shield M2.0 comes into existence, but this way I can eventually own 4 Shields. As far as I know no one has ever died because they owned to many Smith & Wessons. And if they have that's not a bad way to go.



You can read and watch reviews all over the net so I will keep this short and sweet. I had my LGS pull out a bone stock standard Shield 9mm and two different PC series Shields. I brought a long my trusty Lyman digital trigger pull gauge as well. The bone stock gun came in at (averaging 3 pulls) 6lbs 11oz, the first PC Shield came in at 5lbs 13oz and the second PC Shield came in at 5lbs 10oz. I bought the one with the lightest factory trigger. In comparison my two Apex equipped Shields (DCAEK and metal triggers) comes in at 4lbs 15oz and 5lbz 1oz respectively.

I intended to immediately pull and sell the fiber optic sights, as I always put 10-8 rears and Ameriglo fronts on my Smiths. But after handling it in the my office for awhile I decided that I kind of like them. I might just leave them on for awhile and make a few trips to the range. Who knows, they may just stay on permanently. Tritium is really less important (IMO) than a good flashlight anyway.

I am not worried at all about the porting because 99.9% of the fear mongering you read on the net about the evils of ported guns comes from keyboard commandos who have never actually touched a ported gun in their lives. Plus I am willing to actively work on not holding a port directly to my eyeball when shooting in total darkness (presumably underground while hunting CHUD). In my experience porting does however give you a 'just noticeable' reduction in muzzle flip and that's pretty much all it does.

I need to get in some range time with this little gun before it enters the carry rotation, but at this point I see it taking a place somewhere near the head of the line.

I love the PC Shield and have around 450 trouble free rounds rds through it. I ordered some Trijicon HD XR night sights. The HiViz sights are nice and are good during sunlight but I like having night sights on a carry gun.

I ONLY have two Shields -

I did replace the HiViz on my PC shield with some Dawson Precision night sights, but I did shoot it some with the HiViz, and they were good. i just wanted to match the sights up with what I have on my other carry gun

My normal sight set up is 10-Precision Rears with orange or green + tritium Ameriglo Proglo front sights. It's basically what the Trijicon HD's developed into (sans the rear viles) but I was using them before the HD's existed and before 10-8 made a Shield specific sight. I love this set up although it is more geared for speed than pinpoint accuracy. I will likely end up with them on this Shield too.

So I took out the PC Shield and put an initial 100 rounds through it. I am very pleased. It was as accurate and reliable as one would expect, and the muzzle flip was indeed a little less than a non-ported Shield. I was shooting outdoors and it was a tad cold (40 degrees or so) otherwise I would have done more comparison shooting. Even as the sun started to go down the fiber optic sights remained easy to see. 100-200 more rounds of TMJ and then I will go through a box of Hydrashocks, and if it digests it all this gun will become my go-to Shield.

Not a fear mongering kind but for me porting is good on competition guns and that about wraps that up but to each there own I don't buy into it'll blind you BS that others talk about seen them fired at night and honestly the flash isn't any different than what comes out the end of the barrel so not a big deal but they are louder but not that much that it is going to be a issue. You mentioned S&W coming out with a Shield M2.0. That's the first I've heard of this. Can you tell me anything about the new Shield coming out?

I can tell you that the S&W business model with the M&P has not changed since it's inception: Come out with a Gen 1 with a manual safety, then come out with a Gen 1 with no manual safety, then come out with a Gen 1 Performance Center with a manual safety, then come out with a Gen 1 Performance Center with no manual safety, then come out with a Gen 2 with a manual safety, then come out with a Gen 2 with no manual safety, etc., etc., etc.

With the Shield 45 being M2.0 ish it's just a matter of time until the Shield 9 is M2.0 ish. That's how you sell as many S&W as possible and how you get current S&W owners to buy a second one, or a third one, or a... Let's not forget that the M2.0 is really just a tweaked M1.0 with some cosmetic upgrades.

You sound like we think alike. I need some advice or opinion concerning a new belt holster for my Shield. I am looking for one that has a body shield(very important) since I have acquired some excess pounds. It is for concealed carry so the tighter in the better. The top one on my list at this time is the D.M.Bullard Slide. I like to carry at 3-4 on a good belt. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I am only concerned about a belt holster with body shield at this time, I have a drawer full of holsters for other positions.

I am actually more of a kydex holster sort of guy. If you are interested in non-leather holsters I strongly suggest you look at G-Code.
