Shield .45 problem
New Shield, stripped and cleaned before shooting, shooting 230 gn lead bullets, after 41 shots with no problem, gun locks up halfway through the ejection process. Slide is tight against the frame with no movement. Close examination of the gun revels no external damage. Fired case was still in the extractor, no signs of bulging etc. Thoughts?

Reloads?
Over charged round possibly? Not to the point of bulging but just enough to freeze up the slide?

Not reloads. Box reads Match Grade 45, used by National Guard.

Just a thought. The gun may be completely dry. Try lightly oiling the slide. I realize it may sound silly, but worth trying.

I called SW and was told it may be 10 weeks before repair.
Oh well, guess I will have to CC my Ruger.

I sent mine in a while back and turnaround was 3 weeks. 10 weeks is insane! SW must have a lot of problem guns out there.

That's not good. It means they have a lot of broken guns to repair.

I would of probably unjammed the casing and continued shooting or better yet started shooting FMJ rounds instead. I personally wouldn't send in a brand new gun for repair after 41 rounds and one fte.

Case was removed, FMJ were being used, slide was locked against the barrel and would not move, no other option but to send it back to the factory. A new gun should not have that kind of a problem.

No, it shouldn't...but occasionally, a gun does have a problem. When you consider the number of Shields sold, the numbers of those having a problem is very small...but it doesn't seem that way when it's your gun, I realize.
This is why I like to buy guns from manufacturers who have good service (which includes paid shipping there and back.) I'm sure they will fix it sooner than the time estimated. Ten weeks does seem unusually long, but maybe they were accounting for a lot of people on vacation (spring break) or some unusual activity. Usually S&W quotes a much shorter turnaround time. I'll be interested to know how long it actually takes, as well as what was wrong (although they don't always tell you.)
Hopefully it will be back to you soon!

You are correct, I believe it will be shorter than 10 weeks. I guess I am lucky, I have been a firearm owner for over 50 years and only had to send 3 back for repairs, all were from different manufacturers.
Thanks for your military service Ken. I appreciate what you did for our country.

I just spoke to the SW repair, my gun has been there since early March and they have not gotten to it yet. They must either have a lot of repairs or not enough personnel. I least I have additional weapons to carry off duty but I was beginning to enjoy it. Oh well, life's to short to worry about it.

10-weeks is a long while, but not unreasonable. As GKC says, I'm sure it seems longer because it is your NEW gun. Sorry about that.
I can't recall ever seeing any 230-gr Lead 45 Auto loads from a major manufacturer but I guess that doesnt mean much. Have you used these loads in other guns and found them satisfactory? I usually try to start off with a couple boxes of factory loads in a new gun, when it's practical/possible. The idea to switch to some 230-gr FMJs from a major US-manufacturer seems like a good one to me.
Hope your gun returns soon.

It was Match Grade Ammo. Shoots well in all my other weapons. I will wait patiently till it returns.

They must be very busy, I sent a Mod 15 in for refinishing in March and I haven't received an estimate yet. I've had three others done in the past couple of years and the estimate came real fast. Remember, you'll get a quality repair from Smith no matter how long it takes.

Or they are busy processing rebates. Maybe they'll put your rebate (also 10 weeks) in the box with your gun and save a stamp.

S and W informed me that it should be delivered this week but won't tell me anything about the repair. I believe that I should be told what happened and what the repair consist of. I have owned Smiths for over 50 years. This concerns me.......

I want to say this has happened to me also, in the past. And I believe it was S&W that did it. All I remember was, when I got the gun back, it ran without issue. I just dropped the hammer on a 45 shield minutes ago, to add to my M&P collection. Hopefully, yours was an isolated issue.

They will send you a sheet with the gun that will tell you what they did to it. Owning smith`s for over 50 years, you should already know this. Don`t give yourself an alcer over it. It will be fine when they send it back to you.

They've been pushing it with sending guns out that shouldn't leave the factory but they always fixed them quick. Now I'm afraid that system is starting to cave in. The M&P line is flagship in their semi pistol line, they should be able to whip that right out unless things are really mucked up there. I got my Shield back in about a week and a half a year or so ago.
Maybe this is obvious but try removing the mag, and pull the trigger (if there is no round in the chamber...be safe) then hold the gun by the slide with your left hand and hit the back of the grip hard into the 'V' between your fingers and thumb a few times.
I have also, put the Shield and other guns in a padded vise and with a dowel on the slide by the front of the barrel, tapped it a few times. If nothing happens, send it back to the factory.
I've had some problems with reloaded ammo where oversized bullets caused one problem and stupid 'small ball' ammo with a rough coating job getting stuck in the lands with the gun being out of battery by about 1/16: I'm not buying any more of either of those bullets. They jammed all my guns up. This is how I got to be an expert in unlocking guns.
An essential tool. I have a heavy brass rod that I put down the barrel and tink on a bullet with just the inertia of the rod a few times to loosen it up.
PS: check your barrel to see if a bullet hasn't gotten 'pulled' and been left in the barrel.

It could of probably been opened with a wooden dowel rod and hammer. Interested in seeing what they did. I know you said the lead rounds were "match grade", but I'd probably use FMJ ammo the first time at the range when you get it back.
When I sent my M&P FS9 in for accuracy issues all they did was adjust the rear sight to shoot to far to the left. Second time I sent it in they replaced the barrel at my request which brought my 10in groups down to 6in groups.
When I sent my brand new S&W 500 in for a broken yolk screw they deemed in unrepairable and couldn't get me a replacement for months. They finally gave me a refund after I requested it.
I love my 45 M&Ps, but I've yet to have a good experience with the 9mm M&Ps or S&W customer service.
