Time to retire and finally get to consider carrying something other than the Glock.
Looking STRONGLY into the M&P & Shield's
Couple quick ?s

1) I see the M&P 2.0 has a new trigger. Do the new Shields have this trigger? Does it even matter which trigger if I plan on doing an Apex or Agency (or something like that?)

2) I know there's Robar, Agency, Bowie etc etc who do customization to Glocks. Who is the go to for high end carry work (not race guns) for the M&P?

As I understand it, the Shields came out w/ a much better trigger and it took a couple of years for it to migrate into the other models. I know that they advertise that the 2.0 is a better trigger but I haven't seen a lot of comments so far to confirm that. Apex seems to be one of the most popular M&P upgrade companies.

I have the old Shield 9mm and installed the Apex Duty trigger kit. Made a huge difference in trigger pull/reset and my shot groups. Oh by the way, I traded in my full size S&W for the shield and in both platforms the trigger was terrible.

The 2.0's are new so I would recommend putting some rounds through it to see if you like the trigger before you invest in the Apex or any other trigger upgrade.
