Default 175 yard shot!

Last year I bought a LE trade in M&P 40 from Buds. As it turned out it was not issued so it was brand new complete with 3 mags and night sights. Shot it some and then added an Apex trigger system. That was great and I see many on this forum do the same. So now for the shot. I was at my son in laws this Sunday shooting a man hole cover hanging at 100 yards with the 40. I would say hitting it 4 out of 5 shots. So then the grandson was sent into the woods with a milk jug filled with water out to 175 yards. I was first up with the 40 and hit the jug on the third shot. The other two shots were close. Ammo was my reloads, 180 flat point. These M&Ps can be very accurate.

I'd have to say very good shooting. The closest i'd ever come (with my avg skill set and ****** eyes) to hitting a target 175 yards away, would be to first walk 150 yards to get a little closer lol.

Seriously, cant wait for it to warm up here to get on the family property and play around with targets out much farther than the 10 yds i'm used to at the local indoor range.

I'm really not that good of a shot with 66 year old eyes. As they say down here "even a blind hog can find an acorn once in a while".

Congratulations: long rang pistol shooting can become very habit forming, and a very reliable index of performance of your load and handgun! All you have to do is practice.

To hit a milk jug at 175 yards with a hand gun is pretty good. To be 66 (I'm 64) and do that with an M&P pistol is outstanding!

How high did you have to aim above the target to be able to hit it......at that distance with such s short barrel I would think your would have been aiming above the horizon and not at the target.......

To hit a target with a .40S&W at 175 yards, you'll have to hold 4' over the impact point.

Would be interesting to see what that might look like from the shooter POV. Thanks for the info.

Using typical pistol sights the problem with "holding over" is that the target is covered up. An alternative is to hold the front sight partially up out of the rear notch. Having a reference mark on the front sight is a huge aid. Many of our modern self defense instructors are unaware of how accurately hand guns can fired at long range. You do have to have access to a place to practice, lots of ammo and pretty good eye sight.

Since mitchjt made the superlative shots perhaps he'll comment.

The jug was painted orange with construction marker paint so it stood out very well in the brown leaves. The jug shots were preceded with shooting at the manhole cover at 100 yards so I was getting a feel for sight alignment. I did hold the front sight on the jug and high in the rear sight. I could see the jug when the water splashed out the side. The first two shots were low and right. The hit was also low and right on the jug. The 100 yard shooting was from a standing position. The 175 yard shooting was sitting on a shooting bench with my extended right arm on the bench top, no bags.

If the sights are aligned in a normal way, the target would be completely covered. However, by lowering the rear sight in relation to the front, you can still see the target.

It seems to me that most folks these days don't think you can hit anything at even 50 yards, much less 100 or more. It's easier than you think, and holdover is not as much as you might think. I shot, qualified, and taught rookies to shoot for many years using the PPC 60 round course of fire on the big silhouette targets. 24 of those rounds were fired from 50 yards, six sitting, six prone, and six with right and left hand from the barricade. The only concession was that you could shoot these 24 rounds single action. All others were fired double action from the 7, 25, and 15 yard lines. Pretty early on, I decided that since it was not recommended to ever cock your revolver to single action and then hold it on a miscreant, I would just practice firing double action for duty purposes. That did not mean that if I was in a situation where I had the time and place and needed to fire a very long shot that I would not take the opportunity to use the single action feature, and I also practiced that as well.

But I found that I could do about as well double action. It's been a very, very long time since I have shot one of my revolvers single action. Just stating my personal preference here. But I say that it is good practice to actually fire your handguns at longer distances where you have the opportunity to do so. Hang a big target and take a center hold and make a good shot or two, and then go see where the bullets land. Hold high accordingly (and the way described above is a good way to do that). It won't take long to figure it out.

With the opportunity today to shoot at a piece of steel, say a six or eight inch circle, if you hit it, you get instant feedback, as well as the knowledge that you can make things really hot for some one at those longer distances if that should become necessary. It's very good knowledge and experience to have! Guys these days hardly ever fire farther than 25 yards away from their targets, and they complain loudly about having to do that. I just smile! Sadly, my old eyes sure ain't what they used to be, so my efforts toward precision shooting these days must accept a different outcome than I used to require of myself. But it is indeed possible. Give it a try and see if you can find a place suitable for targets at that distance. A cutbank or berm with a few large white rocks scattered about will do in a pinch. Good shooting!
