Default How to remove a scratch...

Hi Guys!

I've been using a light tuck Vedder IWB holster for my MP9 fs. I noticed that from drawing (around 40 times or so) I scratched the front slide in two different places. One is obvious and the other scratch is a little subtle, but present nonetheless. Now, I KNOW some of you are going to say, "If you don't want it scratched then keep it in a safe," or "scratches show character", or "it means you're running your gun hard," or "don't worry about it" and so on and so forth. Trust me, I get it! I plan on carrying the gun soon which is why I've been practicing my drawing and holstering, but I do like to keep my guns in top shape, if possible. As of now, it seems like my Vedder holster is no longer scratching my pistol; and I've even wiped down the inside with some gun oil, and I put a little extra on my slide right before I practice my draws, just in case. So, my question is...does anyone know how I can remove the scratch without wearing the finish, if it's even possible? Thanks for you help.

May be a dumb question but could there be an imperfection inside the holster (hi spot, etc) causing the wear marks so soon?

Hi there. Good question because initially I thought so and what I determined was that there was a little extra kydex that needed to be removed and that's why it was rubbing against my slide. But again, it hasn't scratched in so long so I'm thinking that had to be the issue. I actually called Vedders after it happened and they said often times their holster have slightly scratched pistols in the past, but it's not a normal occurrence and it's not excessive. I'm a little disappointed, but I've also heard there isn't a perfect holster out there. Either way, if I can remove the scratch, I'd be very happy!

Are you sure it's a scratch and not kydex residue? I had a similar "scratch" on my 9c after using an IWB kydex holster that was removed with rubbing peanut butter on the mark. It's slightly abrasive and tastes good too. I used peanut butter to remove some foreign paint marks on my car once. Works great.

You have got to be kidding me. I had to hunt for the scratch. These are working guns. If it were a registered magnum from the 1930's then it would be an issue.

Haha. No, I'm not kidding. I'm a little OCD and what can I say...it bothers me. Clearly it doesn't bother you, but it bothers me. *shrugs*

I really don't think it's kydex residue. And peanut butter? Really??? Did it do anything weird to your finish?

The salt bath nitrading process S&W uses is significantly harder than Kydex. You do not likely have a scratch but as mentioned above some Kydex residue. Easy to get off.

You have already probably prevented it by removing some material from inside the holster, but don't assume it is at the bottom of the holster. It could be higher up. The gun will wear in the holster. Keep cleaning the residue off the gun until it stops depositing. You'll be fine.

Thanks. I just don't want it to keep getting worst. Hopefully it's done rubbing against the kydex, but I will check near the top of the holster. I didn't think of that. Thanks.

The Birchwood Casey bluing pen works wonders for small touch ups like this. I don't have S&W autos, well I do have a 41, but it works great on Sigs and Glocks.

The blueing pen or even cold blue won't work if this is a Kydex deposit.

If the Armornite finish is actually scratched down to bare metal (which soft plastic will not do until many many hundreds, if not thousands of draws), cold blue is the way to go. This finish hardens the surface of the metal, just like the Glock Melonite and other black hardening processes.

That is in top shape. Guns are either unused or used. Can't have a used gun in mint condition. The BEST and ONLY way to avoid wear is to NOT use the gun.

Where can I find this cold blue stuff you're talking about?

Ok, so I used to believe this until I saw a couple of youtube videos with a couple of guys showing off their carry guns without any scratches on them. I'm watching them take it out of the holster multiple times and I'm looking closely to see if there is any holster wear on them and I'm telling you, there wasn't any, and yet they're carrying these guns daily (if they're being honest). That's why I'm wondering if it's actually possible to not scratch your carry gun up while carrying it daily. And if you have a little scratch here and there, can it be removed before it gets worst? That's all.

Stop looking closely. You won't see anything unless it's in your hands. You're not going to see little scratch from a distance and while the gun is moving. My carry gun doesn't have any scratches unless I look really hard. Theres nothing that you'll a flat out see on a video. Even your scratch is hard to see close up. However i can clearly see the finish wear where the holster is always in contact with the gun. This is my every day carry for almost a decade

People obsess over the finish of their guns more then their shooting and practice.

Thanks, Arik. I do shoot every weekend, at least 200-300 rounds and I dry fire at least twice a week for 20 minutes. So I'm pretty obsessive with being comfortable with my firearm before I place it on my hip. You do make good points. It's my OCD kicking in and I'm new to all of this so I'm sure over time I'll look back at this post and laugh. Thanks again and Carry On!!

Birchwood Casey Gun Care products, Cold Blue. Available in the gun care section of most good gun stores, or online, like Amazon.

I seriously doubt cold blue will hide the scratch. Cold blue to my knowledge isn't a filler. If you have ever seen a car paint that has been keyed then you know painting over the scratch doesn't hide the scratch. Also when preparing a gun surface for rebluing the metal surface needs to be as smooth as possible because any imperfections in the metal surface will show up in the reblue.
In my opinion you will be better off leaving the scratch alone or sand out the scratch then refinish. Even then you will probably see the difference in the finish where you tried to repair it.
You can try a cold blue touch up pen, but you still will see a problem with the finish. I say leave it alone and just shoot it and carry it as is because the gun if carried will more than likely get more finish wear anyway.

That seems to be the consensus here. Thanks for the info. I think I'll carry for a couple of years and when I want something different then maybe I'll have it refinished and add a few mods. I'm sure I'll save money that way. Thanks again!

Then you may appreciate having 2 of the same gun. One to use, the other to keep in the safe just for "looking good."

I only carry three of all the M&Ps I have. My 9fs, 45 midsize, and 9 shield. All three have their share of holster marks. My other ones stay in their cases, and have flawless finishes. The holster marks drove me crazy at first, but they were something I had to get over if I was going to carry them daily. I was once told to line the inside of my holster with adhesive backed felt to remedy the wear marks, but never tried it.

I have to admit a little that I can see the OP's point of view; not yet carrying I've been able to keep my guns nice and 'clean'..... knowing that at some point the PC Shield will be holstered and over time could show some wear.
Not something i'd be used to, but then all i need to do is look at the old Colt ('51 challenger) in the safe the inlaws handed down to me 4 years ago to get me in this hobby. Said Colt was definitely used all those years and is not real pretty to look at. But dang if it still doesnt shoot well when i take it out to play.

Guess it can be like some scratches in old hardwood flooring - just adds character.

I knew I wasn't the only one who felt like this. I'm sure it'll pass, but in the meantime I'm stuck with it's annoying "character." Lol

Buy two. One to look at and one to use.
A carry gun is a tool to kill someone with. Not a range toy or an accessory like a nice watch. It is to jam upside a carjacker's temple in order to remove his brains from his cranium while he is trying to jab a screwdriver in your jugular so you can go home to your kids.
If you actually carry it every day it will get scratched, worn, beat up etc. You can't prevent that. Think of a carry gun like a pair of shoes. IF you wear them everyday, they will show their use - there is no way around it.

I'm sure they're worst than this. But I haven't started carrying yet and it's already a problem. I didn't want to make it worst. Besides, I've also seen some carry guns without any wear. Maybe they're not practicing as much...who knows. I just wanted to know if there was a way to remove scratches, if possible. That's all.

Look you think we are trolling you but folks who actually carry guns are trying to help you.
A "working gun" like the M&P if you actually carry it to use, it's going to show wear. Period. Buy a shiny new axe and it isn't going to look new when you chop a cord of wood.

Congratulations on your first gun (freedom is pretty awesome ain't it).
I hope you have a chance to get plenty of rounds down range and enjoy it as a sport and hobby.

Thanks. I'm at the range every weekend working on getting better for self defense; and as a result, it's turning out to be one of my favorite hobbies! Thanks again!

Go with the Birchwood Casey Cold Blue. Looks like a Sharpie pen, but does not mark like a Sharpie. Works very well and then you will always have it and be able to touch up any wear spots, etc... Short money too!

Peanut butter and what the hell were you doing when you figured this out? Extra chunky or regular. I mean really is that a real thing or is this fake news stuff. I have never heard of peanut butter put on anything other than bread crackers and sometimes celery sticks but never have I've seen anything about rubbing it on metal to remove a blemish. Even in old remedy books and I'm from pennsatucky.

I thank you for your constructive comments. Instead of blathering, did you ever try it? As I previously stated, I tried peanut butter on my car, and it worked. Put some PB on a paper towel, and rub. No reason it can not take kydex residue off a slide. My wife told me about peanut butter and paint residue. So you can say it's an old wives tale. BTW, my wife and I are originally from PA.

If that doesn't work get the toothpaste out and try a dab of it ..it is a little more abrasive then the peanut butter ..

Thought I was about the only one who knew and used Peanut butter ..

Here we go with people saying "it's just a tool, who cares." Or they look cool or have character with scratches. Some of us, myself definitely included, think they are ugly and want our hard earned money spend on a gun to look nice. It's a shame to see them get marked up.
