PC Shield back from repair
About 6 weeks ago I had posted that I felt my PC shield in 9mm showed what I thought was abnormal barrel wear. After many comments I called S&W and they said send it in. 6 weeks to the day they received it came back home today. Now I had figured based on comments it may be just the way it is but I wanted S&W to confirm.
So opened the box and read the repair note that stated no parts replaced and gun was cleaned and fired. I said oh well.
So this is it before:
And after:
That's either one h@ll of a cleaner or a new barrel. I am going with new barrel. Either way I have very pleased with the results.

Yes, thats how the ported barrel gets when you fire it as well as the inside of the slide. A little elbow grease works wonders!

I am with you but I cleaned the h@ll out of it after taking the pictures and it just made the wear marks show more. The original barrel also had some machine marks and a little pitting on the muzzle. The new one has no pitting and the machining looks more like what my 40c looks like and what my new Shield 9mm non PC looks like which is smooth and not very visible.

Well, you won't know until you shoot it. So, get to the range and shoot it! Then report back.

I bought mine a week or so ago.. The slide lock lever spring was sticking out and grinding against the frame. I sent it in last Wednesday. Was it a full 6 weeks from the day you mailed it off? I am glad you got it back and you are pleased with the results

Did the worksheet actually say "no parts replaced", or was it that no boxes were checked? They do not actually use that grid, the description will explain what they did.

6 weeks from the day I mailed it. They were saying it's a 4-5 week turn around for repair. That doesn't include the few days it takes to receive it.

Worksheet stated no parts replaced just cleaned and tested. I have compared the barrel to the 20 or so pictures I took before sending and it's not the same. It's fine with me I am very satisfied it.

I'm probably wrong but it looked like rust in those before pics. Why was it brown?
Glad they took care of you though, I'm considering getting rid of my standard for a PC version due to the rebate...

I personally have never seen a "new" barrel with that kind of finish scuffs on the 9mm stamping.....it looks good however and just because I have never seen a new one with scuffs does not mean it is not....glad it all worked out for you....enjoy........

The brown you see is just dirt from firing that showed up on the camera. Anything near the ports including the lower section of the gun came home brown after firing. The wear was near the ports themselves. It actually came back from S&W with some more brown all over it from them test firing so I cleaned all that up.
The PC is nice but be prepared that it gets really dirty. I thought I had cleaned it pretty good until I took the pictures, I went back at it with a flash light hitting all the little corners and crevices to clean it all out.
If it's something you pan in firing a bunch be prepared to invest in some good cleaning products. I plan on firing mine maybe once a month and it's not something I plan on carrying at least not yet of anytime soon.
No rust.

Gotcha-- I have never come with with brown residue. Maybe a ported barrel thing?

Do you think the ports add different types of residue not normally found on non ported barrels?

Yes the ported barrel adds all sorts of dirt in the barrel you don't see in a non ported barrel.

Interesting comment. I have every intention on firing that gun again and if I feel it's not to my satisfaction I will be calling Smith and Wesson again and sending it in.

The picture not doing it justice as the light made it look that way. There is really any marks to speak of it other than it being fired lightly while tested. It all worked out thanks for the comment. S&W customer service is top notch.

I disagree with the brown color. That looks like the beginning of surface rust. My ported shield doesn't get that dirty nor does it get brown looking. Glad it worked out for you.

One tool you could use to help clean that amount of residue is a brass brush ( Lincoln Electric Wood-Handled Brass Bristle Brush-KH583 - The Home Depot). Cheap at the price.
Don't get the steel version; it will scratch the gun metal. I use a brass brush on the breech face of pistols and the front of the cylinder on revolvers.
I suspect there is more residue from certain types of ammo than others -- some types of ammo are just "dirtier" than other types. The design of the ported Shield just captures a lot of the powder residue, normally pushed out the front of a barrel, and it is deposited on the outside of the barrel and presumably the inside of the slide.

Everyone - for those interested I finally was able to get the PC back to the range on Monday and fired over a hundred rounds of freedom ammunition reloads (freedom confirmed with me no issues with ported barrels) and Remington leadless umc. Had no issue at all. Barrel looks perfect. Gun cleaned up perfectly. Very happy with it.
Also took my new non PC 9mm shield and no issues at all with it.
It was a good day. Took 5 of my pistols and they all ran great and came home with six... yep a good day.

Nice, congrats on another one! Because of the Shield I've been looking at the M&P full size and compact.
So since this thread, I ended up picking up a PC9 too and just now took a look through the thread again. I am finding something similar.
When I picked it up the barrel was bone dry. Looked like it was fired and never cleaned. It had about a month and a half of sitting (manuf date: 03/08/2017, picked up 04/20/2017) so it was hard to clean at first. Took it home, slide even jammed back a few times but resolved after a thorough cleaning and lubing (200 shots since, never locked back while firing and is a non-issue, just when it was fresh out of the box).
Have gone to the range twice now. Barrel gets dry quick with the ports, wasn't too surprised. But the barrel as it dries (either after firing, or during cleaning when I let the solvent soak in a bit) ends up looking similar to your pics.
I lube it up real well and it SEEMS to be a non-issue but maybe Im overlooking it just because it looks slick.
Here are some pics to see what you think. It wasn't worrying me until I revisited this thread. The original pictures you posted are what mine look like after shooting it.
Fresh out of the box-- bone dry:
Slide out of the box:
After 50 rounds through a Standard Shield and 100 rounds through the ported Shield (not post cleaning):
I usually clean within 24hrs of shooting anyway, but I make sure I do ASAP with the ported barrel. I do notice now, there is still brown "residue"(?) on the frame under the barrel and some on the very front corners of the slide. Maybe it's time to upgrade from my Outers and Hoppes regimen. I'll look into what was mentioned in this thread.
After adding another 100 rounds today, for a total of 200 so far, these are AFTER I've cleaned it. Maybe I should send these in to S&W and see what they think.
You mentioned pitting... I saw this too on my standard Shield but didn't think much of it.
EDIT: I hope I don't need to have registered it with S&W-- I always seem to forget to do that.

Greeenteeee- that's similar (the more I look at it the more I think it's the same) to what I had seen but mine after only 75 rounds. The pitting though looks the same as what I had seen. I didn't get any of that after it came back from repair.
Don't think registering it makes a difference. Give them a call they'll take care of you.

It basically looked like that straight out of the box. Just more obvious after putting solvent on it to clean. I don't even think it got better or worse after the 200 rounds through it.

After sending photos to S&W they said it is powder that burnt into the barrel. I'll look into that if it's a ported barrel thing and if so, I'll keep shooting. It does concern me that someone in this thread thought it was surface rust.
EDIT: I tried cleaning the barrel again, I usually just wipe it down with solvent soaked patch, let it sit a bit. Aside from the bore, brass brushes don't touch the outside of the barrel. I have unused brass bore brushes I used for the outside of the barrel. Some light scrubbing minimized it but not completely. Maybe it's just the extra maintenance from the ported barrel.
Makes me wonder why Vulcannut's barrel required replacement as the patterns of "burnt powder on the barrel" look very similar to mine.

It is not rust. It is residue from the ported barrel. Both of mine and any one I have ever looked at is the same way. You have a rare pistol.

Just seen this greeenteeee - new my barrel showed no abnormal wear or marks. After 75 rounds it had wear that no matter how much cleaning would not take away. S&W wanted me to send it to them and it came back looking new. I took it the range again (twice now) and it came back and cleaned up looking like new again both times. So what I had seen may not be the same.

Were they adamant you send it back at first sight of pictures you sent in?
The first time they said it looks like "powder burnt into the barrel," then I asked for recommendations on how to clean off the powder. They passively said they can take a look.
What I'm going to do is try the products they recommended. Brass brush, then see how clean I can get it... shoot it... clean it.... and see how it goes.

Sorry but just seen this post. Since the site has had issue my iPad is not dealing with the issues well. Anyway I called twice. First they said you can get some burning that should clean off. So I tried and no cleaning was making it better. Brass brush, hopes elite, hopes #9, mp pro copper cleaner, rem oil, toothbrush, plastic bristles, I through everything I had at it. Didn't clean off of get any better. I called back and they said it's not normal so send it in.
It was wear, had to be, and also the barrel had some rough machine marks showing that the new one doesn't. I ran close to 250 rounds since getting it back and it cleans up perfect. I sent it in only after 75 rounds so....

Gotcha, well if only after 75 rounds, something definitely sounded wrong with it. Glad you're now getting more rounds through it.
I ran another 100 through it today (300 total) so I'll see how it cleans up.
