Default Not the start I was hoping for with my new 9mm Shield

I took my new M&P Shield to the gun range this evening. Ran 150 rounds of new store bought Perfecta and Federal 115 grain ammo through it.

No jams or failure to eject. Pretty accurate little gun that felt good in my hands.

The only thing that I noticed at the range was that on a few closer shots (5 yards) the targets had not only the bullet holes but also a light smattering of tearing near the hole, but not touching it, like a meteor's shower would leave. I wasn't sure if my paper targets had been roughed around while in the trunk, so I didn't think much about it.

When I got home to clean the gun I made sure it was safe and followed the instructions (not my first semi pistol) to take it down. The slide would move forward about 1/8", but wouldn't come off. I tried several times, making sure the magazine was out and sear activation lever and take down lever were down. Pulling the trigger while trying to take the slide off. Same result every time. I can still rack the slide back and forth on the frame, just can't get it to come off when following all directions.

Oh, and the meteor shower on the target? Looking at the front opening in the barrel there are a couple of places that look like they have been shaved off a bit. Wondering if that was shavings from the barrel or bullet making that pattern.

So, I don't get to be one of those who gets on here and talks about their new Shield experience going off without a hitch. I will be calling S&W tomorrow to see about sending this brand new pistol back to them for their review and action.

Thanks for reading!

Does yours have a magazine disconnect lever? I remember going crazy trying to remove the slide on my 9c until saw the mag disconnect lever I felt so dumb LOL !!.

Default Sear activation lever

Was the sear activation lever down at the same time you were pulling the trigger when trying to remove the slide? If so, could it be an either , or option?

Without more detail I would guess the guide rod/recoil spring is jammed or out of alignment. If that's the case retract the slide slowly and try to go a bit past the slide stop. Engage the slide stop. Maybe a little wiggle on it will set it. Slowly release the slide, hand close. Pull trigger and see if it comes off. It may need to take a trip to Springfield if all else fails.

Except for not pulling the trigger during disassembly, the slide on my new Shield does the exact same thing - hanging up about 1/8" forward of where it would normally be when released from the locked position.

However, a little forward nudge will go ahead and pop my slide right off.

It is also totally unnecessary to pull the trigger during disassembly if the sear activation lever is disengaged.

Um, what? The mag disconnect has no affect on the field strip.

Default Shield update

Thanks for the comments. No pics of the targets and didn't take any of the gun before I boxed it up to go back to Springfield, MA.

Called S&W a little after 7am our time today and talked to a customer service rep about the issues. First he had me take the gun and go through some procedures to take the slide off. Tried a couple of different methods as directed from him to no avail. He said something isn't working correctly and told me he would send me a return label (which he did.)

He couldn't tell what the barrel issue was without having it in hand and said they would look at it when they got it back.

He asked me to box it up with a letter about the problems and to send it back so they could take a look at everything. He said the bad news is it is taking at least six weeks to get guns back as this is their busiest time of the year.

Very nice fellow and I have been pleased by S&W customer service in the past (Dad's Model 36-1 revolver I had to send to them) so nothing to do now but wait to hear back from them. I will let you know what I hear.

I think 6 weeks is to lower your expectations. 3-4 weeks is usually the norm.

Yep, my Shield 45 just shipped yesterday from S&W and it was indeed gone for 6 weeks.

Too late for the OP now, but I have found that both my shield and FS M&P tend to get stuck on the takedown lever. I make sure to hold it forward with my thumb while releasing the slide lock to move the slide forward. If the lever is vertical, it still needs to go a few more degrees before letting the slide go forward. My situation, with my guns, not all may be the same.

As for the "spattering" around the bullet hole -- if it is like what I have seen at times it may have been tiny bits of whatever was backing your target.

Same field strip issue. Sent it back last Wednesday. (Standard 9mm NTS 10035)

I noticed the issue at FFL transfer but figured it was just my lack of familiarity with the take down process. Contacted S&W support and confirmed something was wrong with it. Sigh....

On a side note, the rear sight was visibly way right on inspection. Shop gun smith aligned it for me. Not the first time they have seen this.

Not bashing S&W. Great company. Just hope this helps someone avoid an additional six week waiting period on their new Shield.

Hard backstops can fragment as can the bullet, bouncing particles back thru the paper.

Default Update on M&P Shield

I received my M&P Shield this week after sending it back to S&W on April 13 (see details in first posting in this thread) for warranty repair.

The Repair Order Completion document indicated they evaluated and repaired the Shield by replacing the slide stop.

Got to put 100 rounds of Federal 115 grain aluminum and FMJ through it tonight at the gun range and it worked just fine. Brought it home and field stripped and cleaned it up and it all came apart and went back together just like it should.

I appreciate the free warranty work and hope this Shield is problem-free from this point on.
