Default Handloading for M&P Shield 45

Sorry, did not have a way to flip the last one. Handgun will not go into battery with these rounds. Any suggestions? According to the specs all is ok

All I shoot out of mine is reloads. It appears that the cartridge extends slightly above barrel hood. The two primary issues tend to be the bullet not being seated deeply enough or a crimp issue. It would have helped if you had included a picture of the loaded rounds and given measurements of the crimp diameter, bullet type and cartridge OAL. OAL and crimp are always chamber and bullet design specific, being in spec does not guarantee it will function in your specific pistol.

Grandad's advice is spot on. You can use your barrel to set your seating depth. Adjust the seating die to seat your chosen bullet deeper until the base of your loaded round is equal to or slightly below the end of the barrel hood.

This assumes that the case mouth was taper crimped or at least any belling of the case mouth was removed after bullet seating.

Will your pistol chamber factory rounds OK? I once had a Kahr with no leade in the rifling, and it wouldn't chamber GI ball ammo. S&W should be able to fix it, if that's the problem.

Check the OAL first.

I'm a fan of the Lee FCD...

Some people feel it covers up other issues.

My opinion is that it makes it so all of my reloads work in all of my guns.

Maybe try seating a little deeper?

Hodgdon online says 1.200.

I seat mine at 1.210" per my Hornady manual. My Shield 45 fires them flawlessly.

EDIT:
I forgot to mention I use 230 gr. plated bullets.

I don't have my Hornady manual handy but Hodgdon online says 200 gr. bullets: 1.155 for JHP and 1.225 for LSWC.

You said your wadcutters are 1.230 and work. Your 1.264 loads aren't working. Try seating a little deeper.

My case gauge is also a Dillon, but every cartridge I've run through it, has worked in the Shield. I'll make mass quantities on the Dillon 650, and special loads on a single press. I do check every completed round in the gauge.

I have my shield target loads they chamber and shoot great at 1.250 oal and the bullet just barely crimped I am using 200 gr extreme plated bullets, be powder and my dies are horniday custom grade taper crimp die set. I would have to look at diameter with calipers can't remember right off top of my head. I have ran into a problem when case is flared to much or same thing with crimping too much. I would just make you a dummy round and do a plunk test keep easing in oal till you get the bullet were you need it.

Glad you found it cervri!

I do not go over 1.250" on any of my 45ACP loads and they work in all of my guns. I also load the 200 grain round nose but plated, not jacketed and seat them to 1.240" and they work well.

I would seat the semi-wadcutter bullet a bit more with just the rim of the bullet just showing.

Also have you check the case length to see if it needs trimming. Most handgun brass don't stretch much not like rifle. But they may need it depending on how hot you load them.

Timely thread. Glad I found it. I'm having a tough time finding a reliable handload for my 45 Shield. Started with a 230gr LRN at 1.250 that works in 5 other guns. Lots of failures to feed. Shortened to 1.220 and no better. This weekend will try again with a 200 grain bullet. Factory FMJ loads work fine so it's in my loads somewhere.
