Looking for good leather owb holsters.
Hey looking for a good quality American made owb leather holster. I have looked at a few different ones online some are very expensive and don't won't to pay a lot for something I don't like so what's your favorite owb holster and why? Thanks for your opinions

I'm probably going to order a DeSantis Scabbard tomorrow for my Shield. I looked at one today and it looks like a pretty good value (Amazon's got them for $53.) It's the 3 belt slot style that can be worn almost straight up or canted. Apparently it can also be worn cross-draw, but I don't think my physique will allow that.

Jason Winnie. Jason Winnie Leathergoods
Some of his exotics can be spendy, but he made all my carry holsters, good price, great quality. Made in US by a guy who shoots.
IMHO, be careful shopping for very cheap holsters and belts. If you are going to carry a gun, a good belt and holster go a long way towards comfort.

I second the sentiment that going cheap on leather is a grave mistake and leads to spending more in the long run.
El Paso Saddlery is my only holster and belt maker. Got tuns of useless cheap stuff mouldering in a box.

I just bought a Mitch Rosen upper limit express.
It holds my .45 shield with good retention and allows a comfortable draw and reholster.
It sits higher up with less below the belt than a lot of others I looked at so it easy to cover up with a shirt.
I like it, but my experience with holsters is limited.

Heard lots of good things about El Paso. I have not handled one myself. And to the OP, if you carry a lot, you most likely will have a drawer full of holsters that did not work out for some reason.
Another option is Milt Sparks, not real cheap, but a solid holster that you can sometimes find used on the interwebs.
Milt Sparks Holsters I have an IWB Sparks, very nice, I just don't carry IWB, but got a deal on it..
I think my next gun belt is going to be from: Tucker Gun Belts | Premium Leather Belts | Tucker Gun Leather
A good friend of mine swears by their holsters and belts.
Lots of options out there that should not be too expensive.

Desantis or Tagua make great off the shelf leather products. What gun is it for and where are you? Maybe a rookie leather worker like me will help you out.
I'd make you one for cost of leather if you lived near me

Now that might be the best option yet. Get one custom made, for cost... Great way to try a new holster.

Plus 1 for desantis. They are great and don't break the bank. But simply rugged holsters are great too. If you want custom

I make my own leather holsters. When buying one I would suggest at least 9-10 ounce vegetable tanned leather. Lined or unlined (debatable), I make unlined as it's easier and it allows any dirt to not grind onto the surface of the pistol. Lined holsters tend to pick up and hold more fine dirt.
Holsters for the Shield need to not make contact with the magazine release button. The holster should ride just below the button.
Whatever holster you get, a good belt is the key. The thicker the better. I use Dal-Tech belts myself.

Bianchi also makes quality off-the-shelf holsters - as good as some custom makers and better than many.

Do you want a holster made by an American or a holster made by an American-owned company because there is a difference.

I like the work of R. Grizzle Leather. I have one of his snap on holsters for my Glock 43 and love it.
Pulls the handgun in tight to the body and is quality made. Easy on and off. Looks sharp!
I also like the work of Lobo Gunleather. Quality work and the price is right.
Both have a wait period but well worth it.

Some really good holster craftsmen out there. I have had good luck with Wright Leather Works. They are a little more expensive than some mentioned in this thread and about a six week wait. Quality leather and workmanship.

In deed Ryan makes the best holsters bar none. There's a reason I have 4 of his holsters. It generally takes about 3 months to get a holster from him, but it's worth it. The one I use every day is at least 5 years old and still in great shape.
R Grizzle Leather - Home
If you want it faster, for $40 more he can get it to you in about 2 weeks.

Thank you all for your info. Well I actually need two holsters one for a 45 shield which is my edc. And a M&p m2.0 9mm which may end up being my edc. I am really liking the m2.0 lol.

Many fine makers mentioned....I also use Galco, Gould & Goodrich, Bianchi, Kramer, Lobo, etc.....Kramers are my all time favorite as well as Milt Sparks
You really need to decide on what features you do and do NOT want, what material you want used (cow hide, horse hide, blended or hybrid, any retention needed or required? What degree tilt if any at all, etc..........
I also agree totally on having a very sturdy belt...Ken Hackathorn taught me that if you can fold it in half vertically it is NOT sturdy enough!
Carhartt work belts work VERY well for me and are not super expensive.
Might work for you as well........

If you are looking for American made without the custom price tag, Galco, Gould & Goodrich, Desantis, all make quality holsters. I switch my EDC depending on what I am wearing, and have found all these makers offer some excellent holsters. The custom holster makers make some good products, but they have the price tag to go with them.

Just spent some very long days with a M&P9 Compact. Carried in a Ryan Grizzle High Country. Walking around is very comfortable. Short drives are just fine. For day long drives, the only issue is my vehicle seat has sides that are sorta big and tries to wrap around my sides. I loosened my belt and shifted the High Country more to the front of my hip for the long highway stretches.

I make my own also. I can get what I want without breaking the bank. All my handmade holsters are hot waxed which makes them tough, water proof, and very little wear to the guns.

Two needles after the holes are punched with an awl, or ice pick. They make specific awls for stitching but I like my ice pick better.

I use a dremel, and bit sometimes for really thick layers. Some people use arbors, I just like poking the heck out of leather with my ice pick.

Just picked up a Galco Honor Guard. Good holster. Holds my Shield PC 9 close and tight to my side with good retention. Around $80 and American made by an American company if that matters.

A lot of options and probably all great. I'll throw mine in.
Brigade Custom Holsters | Leather Gun Holsters; Concealed Carry Holstsers and Western Holsters
Bought a holster from them in 2004 for a P99 (when barely anyone else made one for that gun). Had to wait on it, but extremely nice. May have to order one for the Hi Power I just bought.
Albeit, this Tucker rig above me is amazing.
