Any gun that sees time in a holster will show wear. That's life. The M&P has an incredibly hard finish. It's very unlikely that you'll see significant wear if a leather holster is used. Kydex is more tough on the finish.

I'd like to address this because it's not entirely accurate. Carry is different than use. I know some guys that have been carrying a particular gun for decades and they don't show much wear. I know others who've been carrying for only a few years and their guns show a lot of wear. Case in point, my gun:
The difference isn't in how much it's carried, but how much it's used. The gun above has seen thousands and thousands of presentations from the holster. It's the in-and-out of the holster that make the wear. Most of that wear happened from a Kydex holster.
The M&P has a much harder finish than the gun above. I also have an M&P 45 that also has thousands of presentations from the holster. It has only been used in a leather holster. It doesn't show hardly any wear.
