New Shield Thumb Safety Issue
I own 4 M&P Pistols and 3 are Shields. My newest Shield, which I picked up yesterday, has an issue and I'm not sure if I should ignore it or send it back to S&W.
To engage the thumb safety, you must "click" it up twice. Every other safety on my M&Ps go up and down with a single motion. This one, however, has a middle point. I can engage it up a small bit, it clicks, but it's not fully engaged. Then I can continue upwards and fully engage it. There are 2 audible clicks when engaging it.
I fully disassembled, cleaned, lubed, and reassembled the gun. I engaged/disengaged the safety 100x or so to see if it would resolve itself. No luck.
There are no issues with disengaging the thumb safety.
1. Anyone else have this issue? Maybe it's a new "feature" in Shields (seriously doubt it)? I'm thinking it's likely a burr or something that's "catching" during the engaging process.
2. Should I send back to S&W? Should I remove the safety myself and try to sand it? Should I ignore it? If there was a problem disengaging it, I would be 100% more concerned. As it stands now, it's just something that feels really weird instead of broken/dangerous.

It wouldn't hurt to at least call Smith & Wesson about it. If you've got a really good relationship with the store where you bought it, you might could check with them as well to see if they might exchange it. The store I deal with will often exchange it and deal with warranty issues themselves if you are an established customer.

A malfunctioning safety is not safe.
I'd call S&W.

Please don't ignore it, call Smith and Wesson and see what they say. I only use a safety on my carry guns if I'm carrying one of my 1911s, however if there were ever a problem with the manual safety I would have it checked ASAP. If they ask you to send it back do so and have them fix it. Be safe and keep us updated.

Send it back. It is a serious safety issue. Ruger recalled a huge number of their new Mark IV .22lr for that same problem.

Thanks, everyone, for the advice. S&W (Good ole Brett) recommended I ship it to them for repair. He said it is not normal and should be looked at.

I have 3 NIB Shield 9's with safety. I yanked them out of the box and examined the safety on each (something new for me because the Shield I carry and shoot is "safety-less". I can feel a small click as I begin to engage the safety. This happens maybe 10 or 20% of the way up and is only noticeable if I pay careful attention. Nevertheless, it is possible to engage the safety with one upward motion. I guess yours is problematic.

Yes. Exactly as you described. As I said, it's not a huge issue but it's not normal. Even S&W says to send it in. Part of me says ignore it, but part of me says it may be a sign of a bigger issue (or future problem).

I'd have never checked (they've never been out of the box) and even so would never have noticed had I not seen your post. It feels ok to me since it was common to all three I have and I have no other basis for comparison.

My new Shield 9 Has the Exact Same Issue
It clicks in exactly the same spot as described by the OPer. Does not click when dis-engaging

When you send yours back, would you let us know the outcome?
Thanks
