Default M&P .40 California State Parks Misprint

Hey everyone,

I'm hoping you can help me out with a question I've had for quite some time now. I bought my M&P .40 brand new and a little while after that I noticed a marking on the barrel to the right of the caliber designation. It's upside down but it says "State Parks" and has the back half of a bear. After some research it seems like the full print says "California State Parks" and is located on the slide. Does anyone have any idea as to why my M&P would have this misprint? I'll attach some pictures so you have a better idea of what it looks like.

Thank you!

That's peculiar. The full-size M&P .40 is the standard issue sidearm of California State Parks, and has that logo, although that obviously is not the way it's supposed to look. My time with the Parks was before this adoption, during the 4006 times when the script was on the right side of the slide.

PS: I do not know whether the logo is done at the factory or in Sacramento somewhere. California buys guns in bulk; that's why most state agencies carry the same sidearm; if CHP adopts a new handgun, all state LEO's end up with the same gun.

If your gun does NOT have the slide logo, and was bought new, that would indicate the stamping is a factory job and something "non-standard" happened for your gun to end up with an accidentally marked barrel.

That's what I have found as well. I'm confused about how a marking that size which should be on the slide found it's way upside down and on the barrel. The 4006 with the slide marking are very cool though!

Like a misprinted coin that turns into a valuable collector's item, you may have a collectors item, too!

That's interesting. Mine doesn't have the slide logo and it wasn't purchased in California if that makes any difference. I'd definitely say something went non-standard for this logo to be where it is, it's going to kill me wondering why and how. haha

Maybe put that barrel to the side and get a replacement to protect the (potential) value

That is odd. Maybe the barrel-stamping mistake happened during a run of pistols ordered by that Department, was caught, and the barrel made its way back into inventory. Then later it was used in the production of regular guns and it just wasn't noticed then.

I like it.

Probably got put in upside down when it was laser etched. Somewhere, someone else is wondering why they have half a logo on their slide.

Here's where the logo is supposed to be on your M&P:

^^^^^ maybe you should try contacting a S&W collector and see if this may be worth anything. If not then contact S&W for a new barrell. Personally, i would place aside and someone suggested and buy a new barrell if you have the spare cash.
