Default First shot stoppage

Picked up a new shield 9mm for carry because of the rebate. Cleaned, lubed and loaded it up to break in and function test. I took 50 rounds of rem ball and 3 different brands of hollow points to test. Fully loaded plus one my first shot fired and ejected but the slide stopped short of picking up the next round. I racked the slide loading a new round and went on to fire 65 more trouble free shots. The accuracy was great and functionality it was awesome except for the first shot. I'm hoping I had a loose grip and the new spring and gun was just to stiff to cycle. I figure if it was a gun problem than it would have happened again with all of the different loads I tested.

I don't claim to know the magic number trouble-free rounds before you can safely claim it's dependable but it would be more than 65 for me - probably closer to 500. If I recall correctly S&W does not cite a recommended number of break-in rounds (?). I would not worry about that first round as there are a number of benign variables that might explain the problem.

It all depends for me. I've bought guns and fired a box of ammo straight out of the box and trusted them 100%. Other times I've have a failure or two in the first 50 and never trusted that firearm. I know it's not logical but that's how my mind works. I have owned shields before and trust the product line. I had a 9mm shield that never malfunctioned for me but was a jam-o-matic for less experienced family who shot it. I'm giving this one a pass as I really do feel that it was a mix of tight new gun and loose grip surprised by the trigger break.

I have four of em and I like that number. Somewhere in the 300-500 range. My 2 new 45's have 440 through them each and they are just now "getting there"

it's not uncommon for experienced shooters to have a hiccup or two with the first few rounds fired through a new pistol...especially a small thin gripped pistol such as the Shield. A good number of pistols have a "learning curve" the new user needs to adjust to.

Chances are you accidentally bumped the slide stop on that first round. No an uncommon thing for someone new to a gun.

Press on and keep shooting. I think the gun is fine.

I hadn't thought of that but I would explain it, thanks.

Like some have already said some you buy you just know they will be trustworthy. My rule of thumb is a flawless 250 rounds. All of mine have indeed been flawless other than my Springfield Xds 45acp. It was miserable for 1st 500 rounds and wouldn't run a full magazine. But now has about 800 threw. But it does give you a trust issue.

If it was just the first round and that it it could have been anything. The ammo, you, the gun, the mag a combination of all 4. I'd shoot a few hundred rounds to double check and press on

Don't know if it's related or not but while cleaning I noticed the take down lever really rubs the recoil spring assembly. I found that the recoil spring doesn't sit flat against the keeper like other guns but instead rests on its pointed end. Not sure if this is a problem or not but emailed smith with a note and pictures. They emailed me back with a tracking number and stated that a new on was on its way to me. I thought that was pretty darn good CS.

I don't know what you mean by "pointed end" of the recoil spring. Can you post a pic?

See where the flat spring should sit flat side down against the guid rod assembly. This one rests on the tip of the spring instead. Not saying it's a defect, I've just never seen that before. They seem to think it's a problem.

Just shoot the gun, and then please report back on how it goes from here, you had one issue out of 66 shots...try for 200, and stop worrying until you have trouble consistently/repetitively.

New shooters (and some no so new) use a death grip with one of their thumbs pushing on the slide release. Seen it plenty. And not just on these pistols.

First, thank you for the excellent pictures. They help tremendously. Second, that is not an issue. All the Shield RSAs look like that. Mine looks like that and every other Shield RSA I've seen looks like that.

It is not a problem and is not causing you any issues. I'm glad they're sending you a new one, but the one you have is fine.

Just for the record, here's mine:

I've never had an issue of any kind.
