Damage to .45 Shield recoil assembly
I have taken my Shield to the range 3 times with about 300 rounds through the pistol. Reading all the issues with the recoil assembly I looked over the assembly and noted the damage to the rear of the assembly.
Any input as to what is causing this damage. Looks like I am heading to assembly failure.
Thanks for any ideas. Regards, Bill

I haven't seen any posts on Shield 45 recoil assembly problems, but yours does look pretty scratched up. Are you show you have it seated all the way down where it belongs and centered?

There is some issue with the recoil springs coming apart. The picture looks like it was being battered. I would polish it up and carefully reinsert. If it's still getting beat up call S&W.

Thanks guys. Yes, I am sure it is fully seated in the barrel relief cut when I reassemble after cleaning. The barrel relief cut milling is smooth.
Will get with SW. This can't be normal. Thanks, Bill

Looks normal to me. The one in my Shield .45 is scratched up, too, but it's still working well after 2100 rounds. Here's a photo:

ZBill, Anything you see abnormal on the seating area of the barrel? Burrs, milling marks, etc?

Thank you for the additional input. The relief cut in the barrel where the assembly rests is clean with no burrs. That is why I am stumped. I assume it is staying in place. I have read the notes on how to place the assembly with the springs ends up and even followed that advice. Bill

Mine has the same exact marks, I have about 1500 rounds through it, I emailed smith and wesson and showed them the pics of the marks... they told me that it's normal
Your pic looks exactly the same as mine does... the OP rsa looks a little more beat up

Thanks for all the input. Appears I have normal wear but that circle of metal is not real thick. Guess I need a spare. Regards, Bill

I don't agree with smith and wesson, I feel like that shouldn't be happening, but hey, if it breaks I guess they will fix it!

Any imperfections on the flat face portion of the take down lever where that disk rests?

Mine is a 9mm rather than a 45, but when I had a problem with a crack on the muzzle end of my RSA, S&W sent me a new one without any questions asked. Their customer service is really good. at least in my experience.

Here is a photo of the flat faces of the takedown mechanisms on my Shield .45 (on the left) and my Shield 9. While the face from the 9 is completely smooth, the .45's face has a circular indentation with a raised area in its center, that is stamped/drilled/molded into the face. The raised area, as best I can tell, is even with or slightly below the surface of the flat face. I guess that could be the source of the scratches on the RSA disc, but it doesn't seem rough enough to scrape away the amount of metal that it has. But what else could be the culprit?

Looks like there is a bit of wear on the round circle that might indicate a bit of digging on the end of the recoil spring rod, wonder if you filed it flat if the issue would go away?

Sent e-mail to S&W Sunday with narrative and photo and received notification from Customer Service today that they believe my assembly may be out-of-spec and I will be receiving a replacement in 7 - 10 days. I can't ask for better a quicker resolution and must say I am very pleased with this experience.

Havent looked at the 9's, but then I havent had a moments issue with any of the 4 of em.

Maybe I should email them again and talk to a different representative, because they told me that it was normal wear and to not worry about it

Then ask them for a new recoil spring assembly. If they're going to wear like that, the least S&W can do is send you a back-up to have on hand when the original wears out. If you do that, let us know what they say.

The scraped area seems to have stabilized, so rather than risk messing up my takedown mechanism (which I'm fully capable of doing), I'm going to go with Bleek Gilliam's idea and assume it won't get significantly worse. If it does, I'm sure S&W will keep me supplied with free new recoil spring assemblies as long as I need them.
