Replaced M&P Shield .45 Followers
I picked up my Shield .45 about three weeks ago and have put about 300 rounds through it. I did experience the mag drop that has been discussed on this forum. I sent Smith and Wesson an email and received a reply from Rachel stating that three new type followers were ordered and being sent to me.
They arrived today nicely packed and tonight I sat down to replace them thinking it would be difficult and time consuming. I was wrong, I went to YouTube and found a video on disassembly and reassembly of the 7 round magazines. I proceeded to do the 6 rounder first which was easy. Using the video I found I replaced followers in my two 7 round magazines. All told it took about 10 minutes for the job, can't wait to test them out. Here is the the video I used:
I hope this helps others on the forum. S/F.

Good Video, I had 4 new followers sent to me and they absolutely did resolve my mag dropping issue on my Shield 45. Hope it works for you as well.

I just called S&W and asked if I could get the new followers for my Shield .45.
"Dave" in CS just asked "how many and what's your address?".
It couldn't have been easier!

It is an excellent video with great instructions. I don't think I would have undertaken the job of replacing the followers on the 7 round mags without it. Thank you again for posting it.

So, could someone post a pic or vid showing both the old follower and the new follower?

Bigmaxdog posted a photo in another forum thread, "45 Shield Mag dropping- Bad followers?" His post is what lead me to check my followers and then request the new followers from Smith and Wesson. Hopefully he can post it here as well.

Thanks! It appears that the new one has an indentation at the corner (bottom right of the follower in the photo), correct?

Yep. Thats the corner where the mag catch is. They recessed (beveled, sanded, molded, angled etc) that corner to keep it from touching the mag catch on the way by.

(That was on the 15th)
An update on my followers.
I got them today and they all have the metal slide lock insert.
4 days, not bad
BTW, I also got my Uplula mag leader today. I can say that any problems I had with this pistol are now history.
What a great little invention that loader is!

New 7-rounders received from PSA today
Received these new 7-rounders from Palmetto State Armory today.
Can anyone tell me if this is the new version of the follower?
Thank you, Bill

I was asked to show the metal insert that contacts the slide lock. I don't know how to add the pic in a pm, so I'll post it here.
It's the small black piece that is metal and goes through the width of the follower.

You really can't tell from that angle.
Without removing the follower, you woul have to compress it to the point where you can see the orange follower through the cutout for the mag release catch.
It's that small rectangular hole not quite halfway down the magazine.
Push the follower down to that point and see if the edge that appears in that cutout has been relieved a small amount so as not to trigger the mag release when it passes by on its way up.
Check some previous pics in this thread that show that relief cut compared to one without.
Hard to explain but easy to see.

OK, I'll add to the confusion. Below is a picture of a 7-round follower from my Shield .45. It appears to be different from those pictured in your post. It's like the improved model, but without the indentation on the right front corner. It also looks like the the ones in ZBill's post #17, above. They work well. I've never had a magazine drop or a failure to lock back.
Here's an idea. Let's start a Shield .45 magazine followers collectors' association. Collect 'em all, trade 'em, sell 'em, whatever. Even if they don't turn out to be worth much, they make great Christmas tree ornaments.

You guys got lucky. The chat fellow, Brett, I talked to wanted me to send in my mags for "evaluation".
Thanks but no thanks. I guess I'll try modifying them myself.

Rachel....gotta ask for Rachel. When you call or chat ask for Rachel.
Rachel is advised to the problem and we have her "broken in" properly. Make sure you talk to Rachel.
We've got a good thing goin with Rachel

I call back to see if someone other than Brett answers. If he does then just tell him you swapped a friend's follower into your mags and it corrected the mag drop issue, no eval necessary.

I haven't had a mag drop with any of my six 45 Shields so I guess I was lucky. I did call the factory last week to get a half-dozen new followers and they sent them right out. I called, not chat. After I got the new followers, I realized I could easily modify my old followers with a sharp jewelers file or my Dremel. Just don't remove too much material and your old followers will be just as usable as the newer ones.

Hey if u remember me (7 round mag that would only load 6) I've been nothing but frustrated with these darn 7 rounders. I last told u I bought 2 more 7's. I went to a pistol league with em last night and darn as they dropped while I was shooting. I was just starting to do some research in the forum when I cam across this one. Guess I will need to call S&W and get some followers too. Does the 6 rounders have the trouble also or just the 7's. I am getting sick and tired of S&W quality. Sure seems to have gone down hill. Had trouble with a PC 1911 which I had to send back for repair.

Of course I remember you Boscome. I am very sorry to hear that you are still frustrated with them.
Did the new 7 rounders do the same thing? ....and I am pretty sure the 6 rounders are the same due to being caused by the follower.
Yea get the followers.....TALK TO RACHEL.
I already had a long conversation with her and she is aware of all of us here on the Forum and that we need her good help. Easy peasy.

I'll give her a call. I saw the pic of a good follower & bad one. All 3 mags I recently got from Cabela's have bad followers.

I have about 440 rounds through my Shield .45 without any mag drops. As this is my EDC, I'm a bit concerned now after reading about this. Should I go ahead and get some new followers, even tho I'm not having the problem? Am I good to go since it hasn't happened yet?
How widespread is the mag drop problem?

440...me too. 500ish through both.
You havent had ANY FTL issue? I HAVE noticed occasionally that the mag needed reseating or popped out. Wifey too. We just wrote it off to the fact that we might have nicked the release button. Now Im not so sure.

Widespread problem? Not really.
But there IS a problem...and the solution is Rachel
(just spoke to her again on "chat" and got Fedex tracking from her...followers be here tommorrow)

So I called this morning. Unfortunately, I didn't get Rachel. Instead, I got some guy who said that the whole Shield .45 "new style follower" thing is a big Internet myth and that I'll need to send in my Shield .45 to the mothership for repair if I am having mag drop issues not caused by me hitting the release accidentally.
I then offered to BUY the gosh-darn new style magazine followers. I mean, how much could they cost me? It's better than risking damage by sending the gun in for repair, right?
But again, he insisted that there are no "new style followers" and that it's all a big myth and I can waste my money if I want to but I'm just going to get the exact same (old style) followers that are in my Shield .45 and spare mags right now.
I guess I wait another week and hope I get Rachel next time I call.
|
Yes- its all just one big internet Myth that we started a few months ago to try to make S&W broke by having them send us new followers. So far our evil plan has worked- I estimate that if we add up Material and shipping costs of all of them sent out we have at least screwed S&W out of $100- mission accomplished!
Seriously just call them until you get someone who is aware of the issue- maybe ask for a supervisor if you get resistance.

They are quick to pick up on chat.
I just tried again and got Brett. Hung up on him.
I usually hit it up around 9am and I have gotten Rachel everytime. Luck of the draw.
Just spoke to her again this morning.
I think I would call...tell them your already working on a problem with Rachel and would be glad to wait on her or leave a call back.
....or, just hit chat, and hang up till ya get Rachel.
Best I can do man!!!
(I guess you could gimme your ph# and I could have her call ya )

Nope, not even one FTE or FTF and no mag drops. The only problem I had was after the first time I took it to the range. The RSA came apart when I disassembled it for cleaning.

I tried getting on chat a couple of times today. Didn't work. Chat was too busy, it said, and sent me to their e-mail page. Haven't heard back yet.

Did U look at the pic and figure out if ur mags have the good or bad followers. No need to order new ones if u already have the good ones.

LOL! I just got my 45 shield 45 a few months ago. Looks like I have the non updated followers.
Looks like I need me some Rachael too.

Yes, the two that came with it and the three I ordered from Quantico Tactical are not grooved. The Shield was purchased in April, this year.

Bag of mythical creatures showed up on my doorstep today. They were lonely. I had to take them in and give them a good home.
Ok...had to edit that. mightve been little strong. Some "guy" at S&W doesnt have a clue what he is talkin about.
There we go. Thats better.
...and Rachel definitely wins the day!!!

Thanks for the pic and explanation. I put about 120 rounds through my new Shield 45 last week and had no problems. Was wondering if it would pop up, but your explanation shows that my gun came with the new followers.

Went on the chat...Brett wanted me to send my mags back for replacement (2 to 4 weeks) or order replacement followers (on backorder, no idea when they will be in). I've tried 4 or 5 times to get someone else and keep getting Brett. Guess I'll keep trying!

I sent mine to S&W because of the mag dropping issue. They sent it back with the new followers. They work as they should. No mag drops after shooting 100 rounds with one hand and with two hands.

I see no build date on the box. Where are you seeing a build date?

Should be six digits not separated by slashes or dashes just above the line that says your model name, on mine it's the second line of the label.

I finally got in touch with Rachel. She told me they are on backorder, took my info, and placed an order for me. I just bought the gun early this week and haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. Looking forward to getting to the range this weekend (hopefully)!
