I received my S&W .357 SIG barrel a few days ago for my M&P 1.0 .40, but had to wait on my ammo to arrive from online. I ordered 150 rounds of SPEER LAWMAN 125 gr. FMJ .357 SIG ammo from SPORTSMANS GUIDE for $15.12 per box, $8.99 shipping. All I can say is WOW! That .357 SIG is one bad mamma-jamma! I think I'm going to buy a good defensive round (any suggestions?) and carry it as my EDC.

Its a shame the round never caught on with LEO/public. I have converted my Gen4 G22 and my M&P 40 to .357Sig. I have a Gen4 G23 in .40 and once I shoot off all my .40 ammo, going to convert that too. I find the .357Sig easier to shoot, less perceived recoil and as good/better accuracy. Not going back to .40

I converted my FS .40 about a year ago and never looked back.
It's a fricken' devastating round. I use 125 gr. Remington JHPs for carry and reloads for practice. It's loud though. I hope I never have to touch one off in a confined area.

I use the Lawman FMJ for practice and Speer gold Dot for carry. They hit very close to same point out to 25 yards for me, in Glock 22,23, Sigma, and 40 MP. Be Safe,

Pretty satisfied of the accuracy of the Storm lake .357 conversion in my FS40. Groups well, and after I replaced the front sight with a shorter one, it hits to point of aim now (as well as with 165gr .40). My cousin shot a raccoon with a winchester JHP that was on the deer feeder last fall. Needless to say, he didn't like it much. Need to see what Federal HST 125 does out of it, then I might turn that .40 barrel into a whistle or something.

M&P 1.0 .357 sig compact, tru glow sites, crimson grip, apex trigger workx, wolf springs, stout but safe loading of longshot powder xtp 124g missles. 1405 fps avg. ring the steel at 100yrds all day.

Did exactly the same thing with my Police trade in MP40. The 357SIG set up is more accurate than the 40SW for me as well. I appreciate the recommendations about defense rounds.

I prefer Federal HST in ANY caliber, but am having a hard time finding it in .357 SIG stock everywhere I look for it. After the HST, I like Speer GD, Federal HYDRA-SHOK, and Winchester PDX1.
Any of the aforementioned rounds, ESP. the HST, are the cream of the crop.

You're joking right? Secret Service, Air Marshals, Tennessee and Texas Highway Patrol... Its a mans cartridge carried by agencies that need one shot kills and need them now.

I made the same conversion...good move. I am well satisfied.

Right now my 1.0 357 sig fullsize is loaded with 125 gr. PDX1 hollowpoints, and my backup magazine is loaded with 115 gr. Underwood Ammo Extreme Penetrators..Those Underwoods are monsters.

I should have said in comparison to all of the LE Depts. shooting Glocks and M&P's.

The .357 Sig in my Glock model 32 is my primary off duty sidearm. It meets so many of my needs. It is a solid round.

Use Federal HST

I love the round. Of all my calibers (I hand load for all) this is the only one I always load at or near maximum. The reason is that it's really just a 9mm on steroids so it makes no sense to load it down...if I don't want the power and the blast then I'll just shoot a 9mm. I see no reason to waste my time and components on a soft .357 Sig round. My max is still not as much as some factory loads. It costs no more than other calibers to load so I don't have to deal with the retail cost of ammo.

Good performance and slick as snot chambering make for a really nice cartridge. I like it enough to have two! I think the expense and the blast makes some regret the purchase so I got a very nice deal on each of these although acquired a few years apart. The second one came along and since they don't make 'em any longer I figured I'd get one for the other grandson.

edit: I know you can drop a .357 barrel into a .40 and be good to go but I like the slide to say "357".

I just got into .357sig with a Glock G32 a short while ago. Great round but Glock is not my favorite platform. I have several Shields but no doublestack M&Ps yet, and converting an M&P .40 to .357sig is on my list. Besides Storm Lake who else has .357sig for full size M&Ps?
Not looking for match grade but something with good case support for the hot stuff.

There is an auction website (HINT,HINT! I can't mention it unless I want to be BANNED again. ) that sells both S&W factory & Storm Lake .357 SIG barrels. Also, MIDWAY sells the factory barrel as well. I chose the factory barrel.

I picked up a LEO trade in 357 M&P from Buds a couple of years ago. It is a fantastic shooting gun and it really tames the snap of the round. It's a better shooter than my Sig P229 in the same caliber.

I've got both the M&P and P226 and the snap is about equal. Remember that the P229 is a compact version of the 226 and the M&P is full size.

Duty round for our Air Marshals is good enough for my EDC.

My EDC gun is the HK P2000 LEM in .357 SIG. The Air Marshal duty round is the Speer LE Gold Dot. # 53972.

I've used the round since it was first available in the U.S. I saw it as superior to the 9mm because it was flatter-shooting at distance, and hit like a hammer. I still really like the round but wonder how much it has to offer over modern 9mm+P+, of the type we had in Europe 35+ years ago, not counting bullet design.

I've had three P229 Sigs and one P239 in the caliber. I've converted several other guns and am still looking for a 357Sig barrel for my Beretta 96.

When S&W announced the M&P in 357Sig I jumped on one and am completely satisfied with it.

My latest is a Sig 226 X5 All Around. I wanted a P226 in the caliber, but retired before Sig offered them.

I am happy with Hornady Critical Defense ammo, and Cor Bon DPX. I hardly qualify as a skilled tester, and can only say penetration through gallon jugs of water achieves excellent penetration and impressive expansion with both. They perform well through flannel shirts, too.

I would not have believed that Sig ammo could be better than other premium brands, but their 10mm ammo made a believer of me, giving me the tightest groups I could manage with a P220-SAO R5-10.
So, I've added 357SIG JHP 125GR Elite V-Crown to my mix and am highly satisfied with it. It shoots the best groups of all ammo in my P229 Equinox and 357Sig M&P, and is on par with the other brands in my older P229s.

The round still shoots flatter at distance than 9mm+P, but as I said, I'm not sure how much that matters any more. At distances of 50 to 75 feet it penetrates more water jugs than 9mm+P. It's my favorite competition round in IDPA.

I'm a fan of the Hornady CD but know nothing about the Cor Bon. Did you state you use these (2) rounds to do ballistic testing with? Have you ever tried the Federal HST or HYDRA-SHOK? Those (2) rounds will knock your socks off in ballistic testing. I am wanting to use the HST as my EDC defense round but am having trouble finding them at a below $1 each per bullet cost.
Of ALL of the .357 SIG FMJ rounds out there, which would you choose to be your EDC round?

Every gun in 40 S&W that I own has a a 357 sig barrel to go with it these days. (2 M&Ps, a Sig 1911 and 2 Glocks) The round gets even better when you reload for it.

I have a Glock 23 (.40 S&W) for which I have a Glock 32 barrel (.357 SIG). I shot my first box of 50 through it a few months ago, and to me, the recoil was much greater than the .40 S&W. I've owned my G23 for 17 years, so it's not a mental thing.

I used 125gr factory ammo, not reloads. I do have several boxes of .357 SIG SD ammo for a SHTF situation, but I think I'll be keeping my G23... well... a G23.

This thread made the newsletter along with my pic in post #15. Kinda cool...

Interesting thread. I expected to see a lot of people defending the 40 cal. against the 357 Sig. but that hasn't happened so far. I bought a factory 357 Sig. barrel for my MP 40. several years ago but just haven't used it much at the range. Maybe I should dust it off and use the 357 sig. barrel a little more.

Until it becomes as cheap as 9 (or even 40) and has a night and day difference between it and the 40 I don't see a point in the 357 sig

I'm still fretting over a different thread a while back that was all negative and doom & gloom about using a .357 Sig drop-in barrel in an M&P40. Now I see this thread and it's the cat's meow?

I bought one for my own M&P40 but never actually got around to using it. Even bought a bunch of Sig .357 ammo when I saw it on sale one time. So which way is it? Good or bad using a drop-in .357 Sig barrel in an M&P40?

A while back I called S&W and asked about it. I was told that the only real difference .40 vs .357sig from the factory is the barrel and that frames and slides are all suitable for .357 sig rounds. That's from the folks who make 'em.

I'll agree the 357sig is not a magic death ray but be it a 9, 40 or 357sig I'm convinced that multiple proper placed shots (center mass/head) will stop everyone. There may be that exception where nothing critical was hit but that would be rare and not "plenty". Even that drugged up guy may last a few more seconds but he's still doomed.

The 357sig penetrates better than the 9 or 40 in every test I've ever seen.

At the end of the day I like all three calibers.

I would have to say that the .357 SIG barrel in the M&P.40 gets a thumbs up. I mean, if S&W didn't think it would be ok in the M&P.40, why print .357 on the .40 magazine?

Dropped the .357 SIG OEM barrel in my Pro CORE .40 and the first .357 SIG ammo I tried (Speer Lawman & Gold Dot) instantly became the best tightest grouping ammo out of that gun. That is even comparing it to the best grouping out of many .40 ammos I've shot from this gun.

Reliability excellent ... never a hiccup.

To answer your question, it is the cat's meow, if you want to shoot .357 SIG!

(I will footnote that I tried the .357 SIG barrel in a standard M&P .40 that I bought used. Still excellent reliability ... no issues. But I did not see as dramatic grouping consistency improvement as I did in my CORE. Warrants more shooting to find out, if I decide to keep that standard M&P.)

idway so I can save $$$ shooting 9mm, but still have the .357 SIG as home defense.
