The button to release the magazine in my M&P shield seems to be frozen. I think I can see rust around the edges of the button. I can't imagine how this could have happened. The gun is kept in a safe and has never been wet.

1) Any suggestions how to free the magazine?
2) Any idea what could have been the cause?
3) What is appropriate maintenance to remedy the situation?

A closed safe will allow moisture to collect inside. Some put dessicent inside to keep moisture from concentrating inside the safe.

You can soak it in WD-40 overnight to loosen it up.

....and I wipe everything with a oily cloth just enough to keep a light sheen on the parts. I think keeping a little something sprayed in the release mechanism and other internals wouldn't be a bad idea anyway. But I check on my guns often because if you let them sit for a long time, it's not surprising to find rust.

Make sure what you use doesn't gum up over time.

WD 40 was invented to be a water repellent but it runs off surfaces and needs to be replenished every few months because it will run off and dry.

I agree, I'd only use it for getting the part unstuck. Wipe it off afterwards and use regular oil.

PB blaster is the best I have used. I took apart an exceptionally rusty boat exhaust using it.
