Having someone remove the striker assembly and confirming the tip is broken off would be the definitive way to ID the problem.
FWIW, back when a small number of the original machined strikers experienced breakage, the "break" occurred at the rear of the head, not at the tip. (Note the machined groove to which the arrow is pointing, which is where they broke off.) The stainless striker above it is the new style design.
Now, tip breakage, whether it's a hammer-fired firing pin or a striker-type firing pin, is something that armorers check for during inspections (as well as for corrosion/erosion, as may happen when primers are pierced, and especially if green ammo is being used). It's not a common thing to happen, though. The tips are fairly robust.
You might call S&W and arrange for the gun to be returned for inspection under warranty. It's not impossible for an unrecognized defective part to slip out the door of any company, and they might also be able to provide some insight into why the tip broke.
If the tip is broken off, and it's still inside the striker channel, it might cause damage to the plastic liner.
I don't use the laser cartridge you mentioned, so I can't offer any potential insight into whether it might've been involved.
If you have another gun which has experienced a broken firing pin tip, it would seem reasonable to look for any connection or commonality of conditions when the breakage occurred.
