Default M&P 2.0 Firing Pin Failure

I do dry firing practice with a laser cartridge which is designed to keep the firing pin safe . How ever the firing pin on my M&P 2.0 just failed , I also experienced it on a another S&W I have that's 2 now . Anyone else experience failures ? I thought using snap caps or laser cartridges were safe ? Thanks for comments

Laser cartridges are not snapcaps.
If this has happened twice, Mr. Holmes would call it a "clue".

And even snapcaps don't last indefinitely.

I realize laser cartridges like surestrike are not snap caps. I thought they (surestrike) were designed to safely use to dry fire practice . I have a small electronic target to use with the system . Now I am not sure about using it at all .

Do you have any pictures of either damaged striker? I'd be curious to see them.

A couple of years ago I suffered a debilitating injury that pretty much kept me off my feet for over a year because of three major surgeries. I kept my empty M&P 9C next to the couch and probably averaged a half dozen dry snaps a day in an effort to keep what little skill I had. My pistol worked fine when I was finally able to take it to the range.

Call S&W for replacement. Broken strikers happen but it is not the norm.

What actually happened to the striker? I broke one on my 45 after it had an estimated 15k trigger presses, half were live rounds. The older black anodized strikers were reportedly prone to breaking. I still don't use snap caps.

How did the striker "fail"?

Fail to "fire"?

Fail to reset/capture the sear?

Break?

The revised striker (stainless MIM) is a much stronger design than the original machined (carbon steel) striker.

The pin part that actually strikes the primer is gone , not sure it has a technical name . In other words when I depress the striker block and push the striker foward nothing pokes out . Tested my other firearms and both protrude out. I have some pics will post later . So I would call that a broken firing pin .

easiest way to find out is removing the striker.

Having someone remove the striker assembly and confirming the tip is broken off would be the definitive way to ID the problem.

FWIW, back when a small number of the original machined strikers experienced breakage, the "break" occurred at the rear of the head, not at the tip. (Note the machined groove to which the arrow is pointing, which is where they broke off.) The stainless striker above it is the new style design.

Now, tip breakage, whether it's a hammer-fired firing pin or a striker-type firing pin, is something that armorers check for during inspections (as well as for corrosion/erosion, as may happen when primers are pierced, and especially if green ammo is being used). It's not a common thing to happen, though. The tips are fairly robust.

You might call S&W and arrange for the gun to be returned for inspection under warranty. It's not impossible for an unrecognized defective part to slip out the door of any company, and they might also be able to provide some insight into why the tip broke.

If the tip is broken off, and it's still inside the striker channel, it might cause damage to the plastic liner.

I don't use the laser cartridge you mentioned, so I can't offer any potential insight into whether it might've been involved.

If you have another gun which has experienced a broken firing pin tip, it would seem reasonable to look for any connection or commonality of conditions when the breakage occurred.
