what do you all recommend to clean a shield? I have hoppe's no. 9 bore cleaner that I used for my first cleaning after I shot both on the front of the polymer frame, throughout the slide and on the trigger group. I went back through and lube lubed it up but I'd like something a bit "safer" as I've been told no. 9 is not good for this gun. Any ideas? A scrubber? Anything? Thank you

We use Ballistol on all of our guns. It seems to be pretty safe. Doesn't harm wood or leather either.

Break-Free CLP works well. As does Hoppe's No.9, M-Pro 7 Gun Cleaner, Slip2000 and Ballistol. I hope this helps.

No. 9 bore cleaner is safe then?

Thats what I use on the shield 9 and 22 compact.Nuthin bad has happened so far.

Hope's 9 is safe to use in polymer guns that's what I started to use since my first gun years ago, now I use CLP because it doesn't stinks like hope's and also lubricates.

I am also a #9 fan, though I have from time to time used other things. If Hoppe's has ammonia in it I am certainly not aware of it. I sure can't smell it in there.

1-5% ammonia.

So that's small enough to not be an issue. S&w told be it had ammonia, but I don't know if that's them covering their butt or... Just trying to be cautious so as not to have issues.

Q-tip w/a touch of light oil (re-scrub to clean AND lube)
Dry Q-Tip to eliminate excess oil
A touch of EWG grease in those "special places"

If something is disastrously dirty (for whatever reason) then a heavy d*o*u*c*h*e with foaming CLP and MUCHO paper towels then the above steps. (air if you have it)

I have a tiny paintbrush...never use it.
I have a tiny nylon bottlebrush.....never use it.
Occasionally use a bore brush if some particular ammo has tried to shed its skin in the barrel.

Now, all this being said, I clean everytime I shoot. I like my machinery clean and lubricated.

Excessive lube CAN attract excessive dirt(s) hence the cleaning after shooting.

I clean and lube my mags also. New they can have shrapnel in them. Using them in "shooting while moving" exercises they tumble on the ground soooo.....

Short story....I was cleaning one of my AR mags given to me by my boy. Heavy dust build up on the walls. Handed it to my wife and said "ya know whats funny?" She answered "that the mag is so dirty?" I said "ya, but the funny part is all that dirt came from Afghanistan"

Hoppe's 9 on the barrel and the 'new' Hoppe's Elite on the the plastic parts. They SAY that 9 is bad for plastic, but I never had any problems. But since the frame doesn't get too gunked up, I don't mind using something milder.

I just looked at a chemical resistance chart and Nylon 66 is compatible except with ammonia gas. Another says the same.

most anything is good. I used Ed's red without acetone (the lighter mixture) and it's never harmed anything.

I just ordered 6oz of ballistol. Is this something I can spray on the entire Gun inside and out and just lube the 7 main points after?

AmsOil. It's new to their line and it's all I will ever use again.

Hoppe's has a bunch of different products. I've used the bore cleaner on my bore, but use CLP and Remoil on other parts of the gun. Ballistol is terrific...it's odor, not so good.

oh, for those who like to mix their own, Ed's red is about as safe as you can get. it's an equal parts mixture Mineral Spirits, Dexron 3 atf, and kerosene.... (the heavier mix uses acetone, but I don't like using acetone and it evaporates over time anyways). safe to use on just about any gun and wipes off easy.

and if you're worried about it being "safe". just use bore cleaner on the slide and barrel then wipe it down... for the frame all you need is to just wipe it out with a cloth and scrub any excess carbon with a tooth brush. no need for solvents on the polymer frame anyways.

Ballistol works fine. I also have Hoppe's and Rem oil. They all work good. A friend told me about Zoom oil for Lube, I tried it, wasn't overly impressed but it worked. With everything I have now I'll never need to buy lube oil again. A little goes a Looooooong way.

Weapons Shield works well for cleaning, lubing, and protecting. Don't boo or hiss, but I also like Frog Lube.

It softens the old polystyrenes, PVC, acrylics and the like, but Nylon 66 is not affected by it acetone.

The aroma of Ballistol with a hint of burnt gun powder is a bit of an aphrodisiac at our house.

Breakfree CLP was fine...switched to Fireclean (great short term lube and preventive but does not clean and not for long term storage...gunks).
Now, using Ballistol. Works great.
Nylon brush, brass brush, Q Tips, rags, and snakes.
Mothers mag polish for some revolver cleaning....

I use Breakfree CLP for routine cleanings in all my firearms except the ones that run corrosive ammo, those get Ballistol. Ballistol does have a distinctive smell so not my choice for ccw use. Unless you want everyone thinking you wear black liquorice colone.

For greasing rails & such I like TW25.

From a lubrication perspective any motor oil & axle grease is a suitable lubricant, I like the convenience of a CLP as 'one shot' product. When I want to 'deep clean' I'll use Hopps #9, it's a good product.

I still have some Hoppes. But since most women hate the smell, I don't use it anymore. Personally, I love the smell.

Slip2000 makes a lot of lube products. I use them also.

EWG....ExtremeWeaponsGrease (made by Slip2000) is what I use on the 7 majic spots

I've been satisfied with eezox and sentry solutions products. Never had an issue with ballistol either. Have used almost all brands of products can recommend any of the above

I forgot to mention that I use canned air,nylon brush and Hoppe's BoreSnake.

My weapons Shield container split, so I need to find a new container with a needle tip. The regular one lets out way to much lube.

Kroil or Safari Charlie does all my cleaning .

Ballistol for cleaning fouled barrel and tetra gun grease for lubing rails , trigger bar etc , around mouth of barrel , top of barrel and hood . I use slight amounts and rub it in . Also mouth of slide for barrel .

A friend of mine who isn't into guns swears by a product called Superzilla. It is plant based and the interesting thing is it isn't supposed to attract dirt like other products. Thoughts?

I rarely go through a lot of rounds, so I usually just spray stuff down with Rem-oil, or even WD40, and then use Scott towels and a nylon brush, run a couple wet patches through the bore, then lube with any number of things I have handy, from Mobil1 to CLP to LSA, etc.
Whenever I decide the bore needs some real attention, I'll generally just use an old bottle of Hoppes solvent and bronze brush, and again, run a couple wet patches of whatever lube is handy.
There's usually way too much obsession with having the latest/greatest cleaners and lubes, and it just ain't necessary.

Frog Lube is my choice for the M&P line.

You'll be just fine with good old Hoppes #9 or Balistol and a light machine oil and perhaps an inexpensive grease.

Anything additional is unnecessary.

Any CLP or Ballistol to clean up dirt and carbon.. Those two however will not remove any copper fouling or lead. If you remove the barrel you can use any bore solvent in it and then use the clp and a toothbrush to clean everything else, including the polymer without worry.

The hoppes no. 9 benchrest shooters bore cleaner has a lot of ammonia in it but the regular has very little. the higher ammonia contents are for getting rid of the copper fouling. I wouldn't use the benchrest on polymer but even that probably wouldn't do too much to it.

What do you mean " stinks "?

I would wear it as an after-shave sometimes if my wife would let me.
While most men like it, it seems women are born with a pre-natal extreme dislike for the smell of Hoppe's.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it is but something in hoppes smells very familiar to me. the first time I smelled it, it reminded me of something but to this day I still can't figure out what.

I kinda want to get one of those hoppes no.9 car air fresheners... is that weird?

I noticed you recommended BOTH Hoppe's No. 9 and M-Pro 7 cleaning products. What can you say about any noticeable differences or preferences between the two products, as M-Pro 7 is manufactured by Hoppe's No. 9?
I recently saw a video on You Tube by a chemist who tested four different cleaners for lead and copper dissolution, with Hoppe's No. 9 coming out on top for the largest (quantitative) dissolution of both lead and copper.

And that test wasn't even done with the HD extreme... It was the regular red cap stuff. If you look close at the pictures of the group of products he used you can see the regular can. For some reason in the little links towards the top of the page shows the HD. If the original stuff works that well, I can only imagine the HD is that much better.

I have been using Hoppes to clean and Rand CLP for wiping down and in the bore . Seems like the crud is easier to clean since I have been using it!
