Default Brand new shield ...Yep ,slid sticks to the rear

Got new 9mm shield last week cause of rebate ,slide sticks to rear ,have read all the post about it ,will try grease on barrel and shoot some more ,before sending back to smith ,have shot 100 rounds thru it so far ,with it sticking about 7 times.you would think they would have this fixed by now ,just disapointed ,had a couple of guys at work a few years ago ,say their's had 1,000's of rounds put thru them and no jams ,last year dad had a brand new 40 cal shield ,it never jammed ,he tried to sell it to me ,but have to many 9 and 45 ,to reload ,dont need another cal. ,bought this cause of rebate ,dads 40 i could not hit paper at 20 yards ,i will say this about this 9 ,at 20 yards I could easaly hit dead center from the get go ,it is more comfortable and feels better than my glocks ,but till this gets fixed ,i will carry my glocks ,..but thank you to all who showed me what the problem was ,

It's usually the recoil spring. Shields are being overly mass produced right now and I would say it's hard to test every little thing at the factory.

Try locking the slide to the rear and leave it sit for a day or two. It will loosen up. Just takes time.

Do a search there are multiple threads on this at least one a week. There is a stack up of tolerances between the slide and barrel.

It's not the recoil spring, it's the barrel shroud and slide. Yes, multiple threads here about this.

I would call and send it in. Even if lube and/or oil fixes it temporarily, it should be machined correctly.

Yup, that's how they make them these days. Gonna make a great single-shot self defense gun.

Just a little 'wire-edge' developing on camming/lock up faces
of barrel & slide, sounds like.

Believe we have already determined that its a stack up of tolerances between the barrel/slide like JHB51 said

Too bad folks are having these problems. Very disappointed as this hurts the reputation of good pistol.

I have a Shield 9MM that is 3 1/2 years old. Never a problem with it.

While not dismissing the problem I would venture to guess that the vast, vast majority of Shields don't have this problem...mine doesn't. Given that this pistol is the number one selling of it's category then it's failure rate # would be larger accordingly and we tend to hear about every single one.

Sorry to the OP for the frustration of a new gun not working right but S&W will take care of it. Once you're fixed up you will be very happy with it.

Failure rate has nothing to do with numbers sold. It is merely the percentage of failures of all the units sold. Very low numbers sold custom pieces could still have a high failure rate.

yeah, I agree. there's a TON of shield's sold, so I do think the failure's are small in comparison to # sold. However I've seen it twice in the last week and recognize that things DO happen and the shield is having a few problems. I got my shield last week and it binds up taking it off the frame (tolerance stacking). My buddy got a shield JUST tonight in from his FFL and his slide sticks back just by hand racking it.... so it's not some "omg, it's UNHEARD OF!!! type of thing

First post....Welcome.

"failure rate" and "percentage of failures" sure sound the same to me, as "rate" is a common term for one number vs another. Like a ratio...

When my PC 9mm came back after 7 weeks the ticket said slide "deburred". It's a shame S&W's QC is this bad. Any rate of failure after this long a production run is unacceptable.

You are correct, sir. My post was saying the number sold has nothing to do with failure rate. It is a ratio. Failures divided by number sold. Sell a million items and have 500,00 failures, your failure rate is 50%. Sell 2 items and have one failure, you failure rate is also 50%. The failure rate is independent of the number sold. Thanks for the welcome, I'm a happy camper with my 40 Shield.

Look the tolerances are very very tight on these little guys. S&W has been producing the he'll out of these things. It happens. They will correct the issue. My 45 and 9mm shields are very smooth accurate tight little shooters. I respect the design of the shields very much.

I went to the Range after receiving my .45 Shield back from S&W the second time and still not functioning right. Had 4 magazine drops and 2 Slide locks in 50 Rounds, sending it back again. Very disappointed and frustrated.

I'd ask them for new followers first before another return trip. They seem to be the cause of the mag drops. I popped out the lip on the magazine slot to give the release more purchase. Feels much better.

Default New Shield 9

Took my new Shield 9 to the range yesterday. Fortunately, the slide worked flawlessly. 100 rounds of 115gr fmj (Magtech and Federal) and absolutely no issues.
