Default Shield 9MM Light Primer Strikes

Hello all! Was able to take my Shield 9 out this holiday with my mom and her new Shield 9. Mine ran flawlessly though I am not a fan of the trigger (not the pull, the actual trigger). My mom's on the other hand had two light primer strikes to start (Blazer Brass 124gr). It then ran fine for about 100 rounds. Switched ammo to HST 124gr and had a light primer strike on second round, then ran fine.

Should I chalk this up to break in period or do I go ahead and call S&W to discuss? In total she shot about 150 rounds with hers and had 3 light primer strikes while I ran 250 through mine with no issues. Thanks for the info in advance!

You can remove the backplate, the striker and make sure the striker channel is clean of debris and free of oil.

After making sure the striker channel is clean... You can ask S&W customer service if they suggest you adjust the trigger bar loop. You'd want to use feeler gauges and likely open it up .005 to make sure it has a little over travel.
Apex Tactical has a youtube video showing how to do it... Trigger Bar Loop Adjustment - YouTube
That's what I'd do...

Did you examine a spent casing to see how deep the strike is on the ones that did fire?

I did look at the fired casings and the primer strikes were deep and good. I will take the advice and pull the back plate and striker to make sure they are free of debris. Thanks for the help y'all!

If the primer dents were minimal, I'd also suspect debris in the striker channel, but since the primer dents were 'deep and good', I would tend to suspect the ammo, rather than the striker components (or channel cleanliness), even though it did happen with 2 different types of ammo.

I've had issues in the past with Blazer brand... Both Brass and their Aluminum.

IM often incorrect O Blazer is not the best ammo especially their aluminum or steel lines. Robzgun has it right.

I use Federal, Winchester or Remington ammo but having second thoughts on Remington after getting 200 short rounds in the last batch of boxes. Since ammo can't be returned, I'll try to shoot it up and that'll be it for Remington. I don't like out of spec rounds, misfires and FTFs even at the range. I sure don't want to be in need and have to be jacking rounds when lead needs to be going out of the barrel. I'm for sure not going to burn cheap ammo.

My trouble was with Remington .223 FMJ in my M&P Sport II. The bullet looked like it was set too deep in the case. They were all 2-3mm shorter than the Fusion rounds I have. The Fusion could have gone full-auto, if I had it.

Knowing what we know, I don't think it needs a trip back to the mother ship. A good clean and lube can't hurt. You get good primer strikes now. A few hundred rounds of a different brand or lot should be good and make you feel 100%. Let us know.

Thanks for all the good comments. I have always had good luck with the blazer brass rounds, I would not use the aluminum case rounds. I will clean it up this weekend and give it a shot again. Like everyone has said, probably just some trash in there. It was new and all I really had a chance to do was field strip and wipe the excess oil off and give it a quick lube.

Thanks again for all the info!

Mine runs Blazer Brass just fine. I haven't yet found any ammo it won't eat. In fact, I'm currently working my way through 1,000 "remanufactured" rounds with a funny blue-coated bullet. Less than 15 cents a round.
