Default New M&P Shield at Range

At the range yesterday with my new Shield 9mm, I was able to keep them in an 8 or 9" group at 25 yards. Shooting Blazer, 115gr ammo. I had hoped to do a little better. I know that the Shield isn't a range gun. and really didn't know what to expect. Is the Shield capable of tighter groups at 25 yards? Is anyone shooting Steel Challenge or bowling pins with a Shield? Thanks

I normally shoot at the range minimum 7yds, never more than 15yds. I can shoot 4in groups at 10yds consistently.
I suspect if you ever shoot someone at 25yds you're going to need a lawyer to help explain things to the district attorney.

At the range first time? Well that is the learning curve with any new gun If you are shooting with gun firmly rested and you have good trigger control then this sounds bad, if you are shooting free handed then it more likely you then the gun.
The short sighting distance on the Shield is going to take a little more dedication on your part to shoot more consistently.

Suggestion, half the distance and see how you do. See if you can begin to get tighter groupings or try other ammo or let a known good target shooter shoot your gun to evaluate the results. From all the threads I read here the 9mm Shield is shooting very well as is the 45 Shield of which I own

I hope you're doing better than 4' groups man. Perhaps you mean 4".

The Shield clamped into a rest would probably produce tighter groups. That said, 8-inch groups shot off hand with a new gun that you're getting used to is probably a lot better than most people do so I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. Keep working with it, but remember that the Shield was designed for real world encounters at closer distances.

Exactly. Not sure why people expect to shoot like snipers with a compact handgun with <4" barrels.

Start at your range minimum and don't move out farther until you can punch a nice tight hole in the bullseye.

You're already doing better than 90% of the shooters out there. Lots of guys talk about their tiny groups at ridiculous distances on the internet. It's rare that I see groups smaller than 8" even at 7 yards when I'm at the range.

8" groups at 25 yards with a Shield is good shooting. Like walkin' trails said, in a vise it will do better, but not many people will do better.

At the range, I practice at 5 & 7 yards. Anything more than 7 - 10 yards with a sub-compact is like trying to sweep the ocean off the beach.

Havent tried my Shield at 25 yds yet but with my skill set and vision and limitations I wouldn't expect great things. That said I would start at shorter distances and work my way out. To see what a consistant range for me would be.

I will try 25 just for kicks sometime and good or bad will post my results
