Ordered a new 9mm Shield online. When it came in I went to my FFL to pick it up. While he was rounding up the paperwork I took the gun out of the bag to inspect it. I noticed immediately that there was a 1/8th hole through the gun that shouldn't be there. It was missing a coil pin through the frame next to the takedown lever. I wonder how many people handled this gun and never noticed it was missing the pin. Dealer offered to send the gun back but I told him I would call Smith and request the pin instead. While I was talking to the customer service rep I told him I have three .45 Shield mags and one has the old style follower. I asked him to throw a new style follower into the envelope with the pin and he said "OK". Got the package and.... no follower. Oh well, at least I got the pin..... Fired 120 rounds out of the gun yesterday and had no issues.

Which pin was it? Can you include a pic?

It was the Locking Block coil pin. The pin that goes through the frame next to the takedown lever, towards the front of the gun. Don't have the gun handy to take a picture.

You keep saying "coil" pin. Do you mean roll pin? My shield has a roll pin in that location. Never heard of a coil pin.

It's a coil pin or coiled spring pin....they're tough to source locally around my area unless you want a box of 100 or so. The pin is actually coiled several revolutions unlike a standard roll pin that is split where the two edges meet. I was a machinist for over 20 years, used both styles.

I can't speak for S&W, but I would say given every other customer service experience I have had in the past 10 years it was NOT an accident that the follower was not included.

Had nothing but outstanding customer service experiences with S&W. Called about the 45 shield followers and a frame plug for the safety delete on my 2.0.... extremely helpful. It was nice not jumping through hoops with an automated system and getting to a guy who was clearly sitting at a desk waiting to help. Followers came in a separate package a couple of days after the plug. They also communicated well when my .40 was in for warranty repairs.

This is only my second interaction with S&W service. I had them rebuild a Model 29 that was basically worn out. This was probably 20 years ago. I shot the heck out of that gun. When I got it back I didn't think it was mine.....they did a beautiful job on it and charged me very reasonable money. Still have it....now I treat it better!
