Default New Shield .40 and 9mm first impressions

Picked up these 2 during the rebate promotion. I added Talon grips and painted in the lettering with Testors to match the Hyve magazine extensions (can't really tell as it's a lousy photo). I also purchased 8 extended mags for each and added Pearce extensions to each of them.

I've put about 300 rounds through each so far and am really liking the scale and reliability. No issues with either being fed cheap Winchester 165gr for the .40 and 115gr for the 9mm. So far, I think the trigger is just fine for a SD CCW. I'm reading through past threads to get an idea on which sights to put on them, as well as realizing that not only do I need a new eyeglass prescription, but I'll likely try out the single vision shooting glasses others have talked about here. My progressive lenses are too much of a pain to get the orientation of head tilt, front sight focus and hope to replicate the exact combination for each shot. As other threads have noted, I too started out shooting low and left. For me, it was just anticipating the recoil and was quickly corrected with practice. Thanks to others posting about their experiences with the Shields here, it's been a great help in getting these dialed in so quickly.

I'm really impressed with these Shields and will rotate them weekly until I decide which will become my EDC.

If the Shield is going to print when carrying concealed, those mag extensions will do it. My 40 just disappears with the flush mag installed.

If your carry system can use long magazines as primary and/or back up more ammo doesn't hurt.

Yeah, those Hyve are some big mags, though they aren't used for my EDC. I bought only one each for the .40 and 9mm to be used for glamour shots, such as for here, and when carrying in something other than a holster - for example, my Camelbak when off-road riding. Here's a pic of my EDC setup (.40 and Galco). My daily attire is shorts and a short sleeve shirt (Cabela's Roughneck)...I look like any other innocent old man.

Default Shield 40

I'm a revolver guy, but the Shield 40 has won me over as my EDC. I put 250 rounds through it when I first got it, without a hitch. Mine is the Kommiefornia model, but I even got use to the LCI sticking up. I like the manual safety, though.

I had to loosen up the magazine springs, add a Hogue slip on, and sand the trigger guard, to get it where it was most comfortable for me. I think it's a great defensive handgun, easily concealed, light weight, and accurate.

I hope you enjoy yours!

I always switched between 9mm and .40 carry based on season. In spring/summer, 9mm, in fall/winter .40.

My Shield is a PC 9mm and it has slowly but surely joined the ranks of my EDC kit, along with my S&W Snubs and my G26.

Maybe it's a generational thing, but I don't mind the manual thumb safety at all. I was weaned on 1911s and Hi-Powers so it's second nature to me. I can take it or leave it.

I get a kick though out of the "thumb safety hysteria" that seems to be rampant these days. "Oh my god, your pistol has a thumb safety. That'll get you killed in a gunfight".
LOL!!!

May I ask what the reasoning is behind this? I mean they are both the same size frame... I assume you think you'll get better penetration from a .40 in the winter for thicker clothes? I don't think .40 will fair much better than 9. If that's your line of thought I'd go .45 for winter carry.
