Default M&P Series Questions

To all: I am new to the M&P Series Guns, and have a question that admittedly may sound foolish, but here goes: I visited a local gun store today and looked and some M&P's. In short, the trigger on the 2.0 model feels much cleaner and more crisp than the original M&P. However., I much prefer the original grip texture. Will the palm swell back straps on the original Guns fit the 2.0? I am thinking probably not, but you know much more about these Guns than I do. I am looking at full size 45acp models.
Many thanks!

I currently am using an extra backstrap from my 2.0 on my older M&P VTAC. Should work both ways from what I can tell..

I have to agree with you on the trigger.
At first, I was very gung ho about the new grip texture on the 2.0. After shooting it now for a few months, then going back to my 1.0, I am starting to like my 1.0 grip better as well. But, I still like the 2.0 grip, just not as much as I did at first.

Thanks! I was thinking of buying a 2.0 model, and putting an original model back strap on it. Thanks kindly for the response!

Your questions are about the trigger and the grip differences between the original model and the 2.0 version. You aren't specific about what you like or don't like between the two models.

The inner trigger workings of the 2.0 model have been changed to produce a better trigger pull, but with the addition of aftermarket parts to the original model, the trigger can be as good as the 2.0, or actually better.

If the 2.0 grip bothers you, I assume the texture although you didn't say, that can be adjusted on the 2.0 to reduce sharpness by lightly sanding. You could also try an aftermarket rubber grip sleeve, but you haven't stated how you intend to use the gun or how large your hand is.

The 2.0 will not allow auto-forwarding, a feature some competitors use, at least not without some parts removal/ alteration.

The 2.0 will not accommodate a milled optic, which is the future of pistol sighting systems. An original version will because it does not have the extended Loaded Chamber Indicator on the top of the slide.

2.0 tolerances are tighter, especially in barrel fitment, and the frame is stiffer. Both of these features improve accuracy, although there are aftermarket barrels that will make the original version extremely accurate.

In competition, when you replace factory parts or installl aftermarket parts (sights) you will often be put in a different competitive category.

IOW, without knowing more about your interests, capabilities, budget, use of the gun, etc., it's hard to provide you with useful information. Because of aftermarket support, these guns can be made into whatever you want if you will spend hundreds of dollars extra. Or, keep one stock with only minor adjustments and call it good.

So, what do you want, and need?

I am a gun enthusiast who lives in a rural area. The gun will be for home and personal defense, and for going outside on my property and shooting at targets. I have pretty large hands, and prefer a large grip. I prefer the texture of the original M&P over the aggressive feel of the 2.0 grip. I prefer a 45acp caliber, full size gun. The original M&P trigger doesn't feel terrible to me, but the 2.0 trigger definitely feels more crisp. That is the reason I am inquiring about the use of a less aggressive back strap on a 2.0 gun.

I have a 5inch Pro 9 (1.0). I compete in IDPA. I thought the trigger was just fine for 2 years. Then I tried a friends Pro 9 with the Apex competition trigger kit installed... wow! So I installed the flat faced trigger comp kit. Completely thrilled with it.
I recently bought a Shield 9 and installed the duty kit. Love it too.
Several friends & family recently bought Shields and I'm shocked at how bad the stock triggers are... just makes me cringe. Lots of gritty take up and then a hard wall at the end before it breaks with a mushy feel.
My son has a full size M&P9 and a Shield 9, both triggers are as I describe above. We have discussed options to improve the triggers. Maybe just a sear and some polishing, etc. Minimum I recommend the Apex fully machined sear.
But for me, I have done the whole kit and would do so again.
I suggest you consider buying a used 1.0 and using the reduced cost to install the Apex duty kit and truglo tfx sights. I have shot the 2.0 and the Apex trigger is still superior.
I have rubber Talon grips on my M&Ps and I'm very happy with them too.
I have friends with upgraded Glocks, Sigs & Springfields. The Apex trigger is superior in every way. The Apex kit sounds expensive until you realize how good the trigger is, and then you realize its a great value. Nothing else can match it for the price.

Thanks very much for your replies. I shoot simply for enjoyment. I don't have any plans of entering any level of competitive shooting, and am a gun enthusiast (learned from my Dad's love of shooting).

There are two Apex kits, one for competition and one for duty/carry.
In my post above I mention my first experience with Apex was the competition kit, but the duty kit is what I am recommending to you.
I dont carry my Pro 9 for self defense, its for recreational use. At the farm shooting steel and cans its my favorite handgun.
The duty kit cleans up all aspects of the trigger but its not as light.

I am not a fan of plastic frame striker fired pistols...

Until The lady brought herself a M&P 1.0 9mm with the Apex trigger kit and Truglo fiber optic sights.

All I can say is the difference is amazing and well worth the money.

Exactly the point I am trying to make to the OP. People who haven't shot the Apex trigger don't know what they're missing.
I know Apex has a duty kit for the 2.0, but if you Apex the 1.0 you've got the best striker pistol trigger. The minor differences in grip texture don't matter enough for me to spend extra money on a 2.0. Also, I feel more confident in the 1.0 because its issues have been engineered out over its lifecycle.

Sanding the 2.0 grip is free. Or Talon grips/material are $20. Seems a better way to go than a 1.0 and Apex upgrades to me.

Talon has sales, 4th July, Christmas and grips can be had for $13.
Replacing a grip panel to sell it or because you changed your mind may cost more than talon grips.
What advantages does a 2.0 have over a 1.0 with the Apex duty trigger? Its trigger isn't near as smooth or crisp. If money is tight, get a 1.0 and save for the Apex kit, or buy one used with the Apex already installed.
If money isn't an issue then what are we talking about? Wilson Combat will glady take your order, or maybe a Dan Wesson...

I retired my Glock 27 for the Shield in 9mm. Installed Trijicon HD sights and stippled the front strap myself.

Can the Apex trigger kit be installed by yourself, or does it require a gunsmith?

Yep. Hardest part is removing the VERY tight rear sight. Videos on YouTube and lots of advice here on the forum through searches.

Apex has some very good videos on Youtube and links below their product descriptions. I've install both my kits, pretty easy with a couple of punches and a wooden block.
Rear sight is the hardest part, take your time.

Pretty sure my M2.0 doesn't have the extended loaded chamber indicator. I will double check when I get a chance.

Apparently, I am not as discriminating as many of you. I own a few M&P models, both Shield and full sized, and both in 9MM and .45ACP. I have found the triggers on each of my guns to be fully satisfactory, to me! I know what an excellent trigger is, especially on a gun intended for competion. My guns are intended for personal defense.

Before I spent any money for kits and upgrades, I spent money for ammo. Everyone of my acceptable triggers became very acceptable (to me!) after between 500 and 1000 rounds had been sent downrange by them. I can truthfully say that any work or expense to improve my triggers would be wasted for me, since my guns will fire more accurately than I can shoot these days. However, I can shoot them all accurately enough, and I can enjoy shooting them at the range where I maintain my present best level of accuracy.

I am NOT ragging on any of you because of what you wish to do with your guns. It's your gun and your money and I think you oughta do what you want with it. But it's my considered advice that you expend at least 500 or more rounds through any gun before you spend any money upgrading it mechanically. I personally have never seen a gun that didn't get better with shooting, revolver, semi auto, or rifle for that matter. I ain't sayin' there are not some out there were not acceptable at all when they were new. I'm just fortunate enough to have never found one in my lifetime of owning and firing a large number of guns. Spend some money on ammo first. Then spend your money on kits or gunsmith work. Then at least you will have a basis for comparison. If you change your gun before you have really shot it much, how will you know if your upgrades made it better or worse?

Personal taste in grip texture, size, shape is always an individual thing since we all have different sized hands in some way or another. If a handgun does not fit my hands properly, I can never shoot it as accurately as it can be shot. OP, take some 600 grit sandpaper and carefully knock the tops off those sharp stipples on your grip. Go slow and easy and test often, preferably with some rounds down range for the test. You can smooth it up a bit without destroying the extra bit of purchase provided by the more aggressive grip S&W put on your gun. I like it myself, but that doesn't mean you like it or should! Good luck with your new gun. I think it will be a good one!!

Thank you kindly for all of your input. I really appreciate it. I am new to Smith and Wesson M&P's, but not new to shooting. I just wish I had tried an M&P sooner. It feels better to my hands than just about any other semi auto. Again, many thanks to everyone.

I have to agree with you here 100%.
I tried giving Glock a chance. I bought a G17.4 in November 2016 and sold it February 2017. The grip ergonomics just don't feel right.
I have the 2.0 & 1.0, both in .40 cal. I have a factory .357 SIG barrel, and a Storm Lake .40 to 9mm conversion barrel for them. Currently I have the .357 barrel in the 1.0. I like that round very much!
I took my 1.0 apart this past weekend and did some internal polishing with my Dremel and some FLITZ polishing cream. All I have to say now is WOW! It has smoothed things out so much. I still might buy an APEX trigger for both of them though.

I just confirmed my M2.0 does not have the extended loaded chamber indicator. Just the peep hole between the barrel and slide.
