Switching From A Shield To A P.C. Shield For EDC
It's no secret that I am a long time Shield lover and carrier (9mm, Stock Night Sights, No Thumb Safety). After finally being able to locate a 9mm Performance Center Shield with night sights, I decided to make it my new EDC!
The time on the indoor range did not disappoint! The trigger was a dream, and feels lighter than it is (average 6 1/2lbs.).
So for now, I've cleaned the standard Shield and tucked it away. I can live with the ported slide and barrel, along with the thumb safety (standard on all P.C. Shields).
I'm wondering if anyone else here has made that lateral move?
If so, care to share??

I have a 45 Shield w/safety, and I was tempted by the PC 45 Shield with the HiViz sights (which isn't available with a safety!). But I WANT the safety and DON'T want the ported barrel, so I just bought a 'SightPusher' from "Fisher Solutions" and put the HiViz sights on my standard 45 Shield this morning. It was an easy swap with the tool. I can't wait to take it to the range!

May not be lateral (as I don't carry at this stage) but my PC Shield is what I will train to carry with. And when i'm ready to carry it will be what I take. Love the gun.

You should run your non ported barrel in the PC for EDC.

My first Shield was the 40 cal. My new EDC is a Shield PC 45. Shoots & handles better than the 40. LOVE IT!!!

I bought a non ported .45 a few months after I got my .40 PC, and didn't like it near as well.
Every time I went out, I liked the PC .40 better, so I traded the .45 for a 9mm Shield to give to my daughter.
It seems after you shoot the PC version, you'll be spoiled, and won't want to shoot your non PC anymore !
Those guys that are dead set against having a ported gun, fine with me.
More ported guns for us !

Just made the switch... Shield 9 to PC version. Wow!
The first couple of minutes I was a little regretful of getting one with a thumb safety, but got over it quickly. I'm used to da/sa or dao weapons, so I actually feel better having a safety on a striker hindsight being 20-20.
Range report... Wholly ______ Batman! I love it. The trigger is miles better, and I like the porting. Two thumbs up here. This one is a tack driver. Going to be my EDC just like my old non-pc version was. It outshot the Sig P220 and S&W 659 I also had out today. Funny, even the old 659 outshot the P220.
Yes... I know it's ported. I've already shot it in dim lighting. No big deal. If I ever have to use it where it is so dark that the porting will blow my night vision... I won't be able to see what I'm shooting at anyway.

I have been telling all the doubters here that you just have to shoot a PC, then you are hooked.
The ports are just the right size to tame the recoil and muzzle rise noticeably, but not so big as to cause problems.

Curious why it was stated that all PC Shields have a thumb safety when the two that I have do not...

I think the OP was referring to the 9mm. On the S&W PC website ALL the 9mm & .40 PC Shields have the safety. ALL the .45 PC Shields have no safety. I don't understand their reasoning, I think they would sell more PC Shields if they gave the customer the option for every caliber. Just my opinion.

I'm with you on the ported barrel. In a range setting, your hearing protection will reduce the noise of porting, but in a SD scenario, you have no hearing protection...and Lord have mercy.
Small 9mm's can be a handful, but not so much that they need porting, IMO. You're only creating more hearing loss potential with not much gain in control.

I respectfully disagree. I have both a PC and regular 9mm Shields. The control difference is obvious between the two - the PC is much faster to bring back onto target. Additionally, I detect no difference in sound levels, with the caveat that my ears are approaching the end of their 6th decade of use.

I've fired ported barrel pistols, but never owned one. My concern in an EDC environment would be having to fire in very close quarters.

Noise from a ported 9mm in a SD situation...
Wow... THANK GOD I never had to fire my .357 Magnum or .357 sig in close quarters when I carried them on duty. Word was back in the day that you'd blow an eardrum if you fired a .357 Magnum revolver from in a patrol car or small room without hearing protection. Glad I never had to do that. Had I worried about this THEN I'd have just patrolled the city streets with .22 CB caps...

I did a side by side comparison last winter with a standard Shield and the PC version, 50 rounds thru each gun. To be honest, I didn't notice much of a difference from just firing the two guns, alternating between the two. If you could get a high speed camera setup and play it back in slow mo, you likely would see a difference, but when it comes to translating that to "can you feel the difference" when firing, not much if anything...
The biggest differences, the ones that were MOST noticeable for me were the trigger pull and the fiber optic sights on the PC Shield. The Fiber Optic sights were a huge improvement over the standard Shield. Much easier to acquire your target.
As a side note, one aftermarket addition I did to my PC Shield that I thought was a worth while was adding a Stainless Steel guide rod assembly Smith and Wesson Shield 9mm & 40 cal Stainless Steel Guide Rod Assembly - Stainless Steel Guide Rods. A single spring unit that makes racking the slide much easier and smoother than the double spring very stiff setup from the factory.

If your referring to firing from retention, Done it many times practicing at the range. Gun in close and slightly tilted away from my body, no issues whatsoever.

Yes, I'm sure that Smith and Wesson wouldn't have offered the option if it wasn't of value to some customers. I should've stipulated that my statement only reflected my preference.
My ears aren't what they used to be, either. I often ask my kids to repeat themselves, but I don't know if it's my hearing or their mumbling.

I know the concern with ported barrels for an EDC are for noise when hearing protection isn't used.
When I shoot indoor , the 40 and 45 seem MUCH louder than my Shield 9 and PC 9.
Am I mistaken? If not, then the argument against porting for EDC is moot. BTW I only see the muzzle flash shooting indoor and ONLY in 60fps footage. Naked eye doesn't see it.
