Default 2017 Shield 9mm - Mag safety clarication

I don't want one. But I'm confused whether I actually have a mag safety or not. Bought it New 2017 online & shipped to a CT FFL. It has mag safety warning decal on the slide saying it CAN fire w/o magazine, and it seems to fire without the mag in place so long as there's a round in the chamber and it was racked prior - either manually or by firing a round prior to to dropping the mag.

But when I drop the mag and look inside the empty mag well I see a small lever sticking out - which according to the user manual I think is a mag safety lever which indicates I DO have a mag safety - although it doesn't seem to be functioning.

Does S&W just change one of the springs to make it have a mag Safety? ( and the lever just stays there either way?) or would the lever be missing if it did not have the mag safety??

If you have the warning, you DON'T have the mag safety. You can verify by checking the SKU at S&W's site.

The other lever may be the sear deactivation lever

1. Check on S&W with the SKU number it will tell exactly the version you have.

2. If you can remove the slide without moving down the lever then you don't have the mag safety disconnect.

3. If you have only one lever that might be the sear disconnect not the mag safety disconnect.

For models with the mag safety, there are 2 levers. One is spring loaded to extend into the mag well and disengage the trigger bar when the mag is removed. On models without a mag safety, this lever is absent.

The other is the sear deactivation lever. It stays in place until you move it. It allows you to remove the slide (field strip) without pulling the trigger.

There are tons of vids on youtube.

You can see the 2 levers here:

As Jeppo says, the sear deactivation is the "yellow-ish" on. The other extended is the mag safety.

Well apparently not. Photobucket changed their usage model and has messed up all my images. I went to IMGBB but it's not working well either.

Click the "blank" square will take you to the album, until I fix this.
