Default About those "torture tests"...

I took a bit of time out today for a range trip, mostly to get my Shield's round count up closer to a thousand, but I brought my MP9FS as well. It was rainy, and there was a puddle in the grass next to the shade structure. So I thought, hey why not?

So I emptied it, removed the mag, locked the slide back, and dropped it in the puddle. Then as it marinated, I put five rounds into the mag, then fished it out.

I simply slid the mag in and slingshotted the slide as usual, and it didn't go into battery. Muck, grit, or blades of grass were interfering with the slide movement. With the ammo out, I dragged a finger into the ejection port and pushed away what I could reach. Bang, but the next round didn't feed. I cleaned it a little better, and got two rounds to feed, one ejected as the next was being fed and jammed it. One round had dropped in the puddle when I was clearing it, but it fired just fine once I'd wiped it off with my shirt tail.

Conclusion... those internet torture tests don't guarantee results for YOUR gun. Do they clean them behind the scene? Who knows.

But I'd recommend you try a test like this with your favorite gun, just to see what the real world has in store for you.

My primary handgun is a Glock. I could dunk it in wet concrete and it would come out running like a Swiss watch.

Or so they tell me on the internet.

Most of them don't dunk the pistols with the slide open. Still the full sized M&P has not excelled in this type of test. I still like mine. About those "torture tests"...

Under no circumstance would I intentionally hurl any of my firearms into a mud puddle. I understand your logic but I'll just restrict my firefights to dry, sunny days.

It doesn't guarantee YOUR gun but it gives you a good idea of what YOUR gun is capable of.

Last time I was in a gunfight I dropped my gun in muddy water with the slide open and Ohhhh wait. That didn't happen.
My FS is a nightstand gun and my Shield is what I carry but hey, those Shields don't do much better.

Torture tests are just that. Real world events don't normally happen like the movies or torture test.

I'd be more concerned with how my ammo functions

I have shot several state-level IDPA and USPSA matches that had inclement weather, and have shot in light rain and in mud.
At some matches, buckets of water were placed at each stage so the dropped magazines and speed loaders could be washed clean of mud before loading. Aside from the discomfort, I didn't see any great problems.
I did get a class win in one because the guy who had me beat quit at lunch and went home...............!

I don't put much faith in any gun torture tests, unless performed by a girl in a bikini

Last April in a rifle class it started to snow then rain and it rained all day. Turned the field into mud and muck. Some guns were dropped. They didn't automatically disintegrate or melt. They just got dirty.

I've watched those torture tests too and while they make good viewing I don't believe they have anything to do w/reality. Besides, I'm retired and on a limited income so I don't "torture" my guns.

A Swiss watch? More like an Austrian toilet....they do the job but leave a lot to be desired.
