About a year ago, I started using Ballistol to clean/lube my firearms (M&P Sport 2 and Remington .270). I assume most here are familiar with Ballistol, but if not, it is both a cleaner and a lube. Is this an adequate way of cleaning/lubing my Shield 9mm, or should I be doing something else? Thank you.

Balistol is just fine for your purposes.

It's a preferred product for high end guns (think Purdey and Holland & Holland) as well as the more pedestrian firearms we own.

I totally agree. I use Slip 2000 Extreme Weapons Grease on several of my semi-autos, including my Shield .45, and it is a superb lubricant. I've always steered away from CLP-type products, because I'm dubious that they could be as good at cleaning as dedicated cleaners, and as good at lubricating as dedicated lubricants. For cleaning, I use Mil-Comm MC25 cleaner/degreaser. It's non-toxic and very effective.

What, me worry?

I tried to like ballistol but couldn't handle the smell. It smelled like dirty nut sack after going swimming in a public pool.

I also can attest to slip 2000 products. great stuff. I've used most of their products and the only one I wasn't 100% impressed with was the carbon killer.

one product worth checking out is hornady one shot gun cleaner and dry lube. its an aerosol spray CLP type product but will actually dry and leave a mostly dry film that won't attract dust and all that. It works really well. that's mostly what I've been using lately along with maybe a little dab of slip 2K EWG on rails

This is what I use when I want the best of both worlds;

Grizzly Grease Non-Toxic CLP 4 FL OZ. - Grizzly Gun Care

On the high friction surfaces of semi-auto slide grooves, I use a very slippery higher viscosity white lube that stays in the track and does not run after the slide gets hot from shooting. For that purpose I use Mil-Comm TW25B grease in a syringe applicator.

This is one of the top greases I hear about... have you ever used the slip 2000 EWG (extreme weapons grease)?

Just curious if anyone has compared the two...

I got a big tub of the EWG a couple years ago and fill my own syringes. a very handy way to apply the greases.

I tried a few slide lubes, but not the slip.

On a side note, how do you like that grip? better than the Talon grips? I have felt like the grip could use a little more "girth" for my liking. Does this grip accomplish that?

I use breakthrough clearer and oil. The cleaner works better than ballistol. No need scrub as hard and doesnt smell like ****. The oil is better too. I noticed the slide comes foward easier compared to being 1/8 inch out of battery when touching the front of the slide againts something (defensive shooting).

OP, Ballistol works just fine. If that's what you use, you can sleep well tonite knowing that your guns are well cared for.

Oh, and do a search on YouTube for Hickok45's cleaning videos. He has several videos showing how to clean revolvers, Glocks, 1911's, AR's, AK's, lever guns... and he uses Ballistol on all of them. If you watch a number of his shooting videos, you will notice that all of his guns look beautiful, none are rusty, and they pretty much all run reliably. Ballistol is good stuff.

I have this grip and love it. I use Gunzilla for cleaning and Weapon Shield for Lube.

Hickok45's AR cleaning video is actually where I first saw Ballistol. I figured if it was good enough for him, it was probably good enough for me.

I've been using 10W 30 synthetic oil on my guns. By volume it's way cheaper than specific gun oils. It's designed for high temperature metal to metal contact. A car engine sees more friction in five minutes than a firearm sees in a year(s). The synthetic doesn't have that oil smell.

Any of the gun oils that say Non-Toxic, vegetable oil based. Most of the rest use mineral oil as the main ingredient. Sure, they add alcohol(s) for cleaning, a coloring and maybe a scent.

It's fine. I use CLP or Hopes. I clean my guns eventually and neither product seems bad or better than the other. Just cleaned my glock after about 4k rounds. Didn't see or feel a difference between cleaned and not

Use any gun oil or grease and you'll be fine. I bounce between Weapon Shield and Slip2000

(edit: I came back to zap that post, but apparantly, too late. ).

Actually, I do have alot of time on my hands. I am currently sitting at home three weeks after open-heart surgery. I am not allowed to lift anything over five lbs or drive, so, yes, I do have alot of time on my hands....

Ballistol for general barrel cleaning (spray inside outside ) a little bit on a rag for scrubbing breach face . Brush and pipe cleaner for extractor . Tetra gun grease for rails , contact points and top and mouth of barrel and slide barrel opening and also where the barrel head contacts the slide. Use pipe cleaner and rags get carbon off the frame . Use tiny amounts of grease .

I answered the question . Being a chat forum people can respond or not respond . Making snarky remarks and cloaking it as humorous seems less valid than sharing your thoughts . So we are schlubs so what does that make you ?

+1 on the CLP. Been using it for years on all types of firearms and they function flawlessly. I grease the rails of those I use often with TW25B just for good measure.

Hope you're healing well after the procedure. Gun cleaning is at least below your 5lb threshold
