Default Just ordered my first Shield ...what about the FBI Protocol and SIG 115 gr V Crown?

... from Gunbuyer.com for $299.00 shipped. It is the one without a safety, which is fine with me. I don't use a safety when I carry a gun anyway. It comes with the 2 magazines and then there are the extras from S&W of the 2 extra magazines, the mag loader and 2 boxes of ammo.
I just read the FBI Protocol article saying that the SIG 115 grain V-Crown JHP rated highest with them for self-defense ammo for 9 mm. Has anyone else read that study and if so what are your opinions?
Just curious ...
Safe shooting~

Would you happen to have a link to the article?

I always thought the sig ammo was just rebranded HST but I guess they're actually making their own now. From the gel tests I just saw, they seem to perform very similar to HST'S but they don't seem to make any +p loads. I run the HST 124g+P load in all my 9mm's.

The SIG V-Crown 124gr AmmoQuest 9mm test results were less than stellar.

And here is the Federal HST gel test for comparison. This is what I use in my Shield.

Here's ammo testing results from the Lucky Gunner site.

http://www.luckygunner.com/labs/self...tic-tests/#9mm

They only run their test through four layers of clothing into gel. (Two different weights of t-shirts, one layer of Polartec fleece, and denim.) If you anticipate shooting through sheet metal, auto glass and drywall, their testing might only be of limited interest to you. They tested the 9mm ammo out of an M&P 9mm compact.

They didn't test the 115 grain V-Crown, but they did test the Sig 124 V-Crown and it did pretty well. They do show results from lots of other 115 grain loads.

I carry HST as well. I'm sure there are lots of good choices out there. Do some research and choose what works for you. Happy shooting!

Here is another good source of info about self-defense ammo:

Service Caliber Handgun Duty and Self-Defense Ammo

It's a list of those rounds that have passed tests similar to the FBI's. I don't see the SIG 9mm round here. The list is over a year old, so the SIG may have been tested since. I'd start with a round that is listed here, and also performs well on the Lucky Gunner tests. Then I'd fire at least 100 to see how well it cycles, and how accurate it is. I would not carry any self defense ammo that did not fire at least 100 consecutive times without a failure.

I've done my own testing, and the rounds that have worked best in my Shield 9 in terms of accuracy and reliability are Hornady Critical Duty 135g +P (174 rounds with no failures), Speer Gold Dot 124g +P (147 rounds with no failures), and Remington Golden Saber 147g (227 rounds before an FTE). However, individual Shields can vary in what they prefer, so I strongly urge you to do your own testing to find out what your Shield prefers.

Enjoy your new Shield!

This is the series of videos that changed me from critical duty to HST. I think the critical duty rounds are better suited to LE where you have much more chance of needing to shoot through barriers and still get penetration and expansion. For me, I figured if I have to use my weapon in a self defense situation it's overwhelmingly likely to just be a person to person type of contact and that's where the HST's seem to shine in gel simulations. They expand a little better in bare gel and clothing tests than gold dots but gold dots do better after shooting through steel or walls. Still, I would feel comfortable carrying either.

I need to see more tests with the critical duty... this series they did really bad but, he was shooting all of them out of a 3" barrel. Be interesting to see tests out of like a glock 17 or similar. The extra 1.5" of barrel might be what the critical duty needs to shine.

Whatever ammo the FBI test it's out of a full size handgun not a sub compact. Glock 17 has a 4.5 in barrel and the Shield a 3 inch.

Until Sig's ammo has been proven and is sold in 50 round boxes like Federal HST and Speer Gold Dot it's expensive boutique

Default I've got a handful...

I've got a handful of mainstream brands that have been tested and found, for the most part, reliable and consistent. They balance expansion to get good penetration into the 'good zone' of the gel blocks with a minimum number of fails. I'm not stuck on any one 'great' bullets, except maybe for Gold Dot Short Barrels in my .38 snubs.

Just off the top of my head, HSTs, XTPs, Gold Dots are a few of the consistent performers in my book.

It's a shame when a company with a good name (no names here) make wild claims and mislead their customers who trust them with their lives.

Sometimes I wonder if just a basic SWC with the right hardness to expand well isn't more reliable than than the engineered 'wonder ammo' we've come to believe to be 'best'.

My requirements aren't the same as LEO's. Even Highway patrols have different requirements than most LEOs. Another way that I cope with the 'bad bullet' is that I'm never going to pull my trigger just once in any situation.

I'd pass on sig ammo. Feed issues on my prior glocks and walthers. Hornady critical defense is specifically engineered and manufactured for short barrel defensive weapons. I just fired a bank vault's worth of hornady critical defense from my M&P Shield 45 on Thursday without one iota of a problem. I had to be certain that it would feed and cycle. Fantastic ammunition, 185 grain at 1000fps, that's pretty sweet for 45(considering I switched from 9)

I agree with most comments. I am a newb but i take the FBI protocol with a grain of salt. They want their bullets to cause deep penetration including through walls and glass...not really neccesary for self defense. This is the same reason i do NOT carry horandy critical duty but keep some in my personal stock (as well as sig v crown in 124gr).

I carry hornady critical defense.

That answers that.

The point of the ammo is to penetrate a minimum of 12 inches. Why 12 inches? Because people don't always stand facing you. Sometimes they're on an angle or have their arm in front....etc..

No civilian is shooting through doors or windshields or glass correct? So if you're getting carjacked do you ask the carjacker to hold on while you roll down the window? Or you're going to first open the door?

I have done countless hours of ballistic gel testing
For 9mm the HST 124gr proved the most reliable and best performing 9mm out of short barrels such as the Glock43 or Shield

Absolutely correct! I have similar experience with all popular law enforcement ammo and nothing exceeds HST performance in any caliber standard load, weight or +p.

In Shields, after personal chrono tests, HST only loses a few percent velocity and outperforms Gold Dot Short Barrel ammo.

For the price, you can't go wrong with HST for duty or self-defense.

For the price, you can't go wrong with HST for duty or self-defense.
For those considering HST 124g +P ammo for use in your Shield 9, test it enough to be sure that it works in your Shield. I had 3 failures to feed in 31 rounds with my Shield with the HST 124s. It was the only one of the six self-defense rounds I tested to perform so abysmally. My Shield was thoroughly broken in at the time, with over 3000 rounds through it. In contrast, the 50 HST 147g rounds I shot loaded and fired without an issue, though they weren't as accurate as some of the others.

So far, the SD ammo that has been the most reliable my Shield 9 has been Hornady Critical Duty 135g +P, which has fired perfectly with each of the 174 rounds I've tried. I will not use any round unless my Shield has fired it at least 100 consecutive times without a problem. The Hornady may not have performed the best in all of the short barrel gel tests, but I carry it because it loads, fires, and ejects every time I pull the trigger. Just make sure that whatever brand of SD ammo you use does the same.

I've put 100+ of these through my Shield, also without flaw. But in mine, they're the most accurate of the defense loads I tested. That's why you have to (or at least ought to) test your own gun to see what it, and your hand strength/grip style/eyesight/etc, works best with.

If you want 9mm ammo that passes the FBI protocol and actually performed best in their tests, how about just getting some of the actual ammo that won the competition and which the FBI now issues with its new 9mm pistols?

The one getting the most press is the Speer G2 in 147 grain (product number 54227), but the other one that passed and was also awarded a contract was the Winchester Q4392 (sold commercially as Winchester RA9B), also a 147 grain bullet.

Default Looks like the Federal HST 147 gr +P is the hands down winner

Thanks for all the responses!

The V crown 115 gr shot the best out of all the HP rounds I tried, with my Walther PPS. Ergo, that's what I use in that. Still need to run em all through my M&P M2.0 5" to see which perform best.

Yep. Run this ammo well in 43 and Shield 9mm. Well designed round.

Any good ammo like Gold Dot, Hornady and Sig all make great carry ammo. Any one of them will serve you well!

I have tried several rounds (focused by lucky gunner test reults). The FEDERAL HSTs in both 9mm 124gr. and .45 230 grain have performed best for me. Both have fed with zero malfunctions, have good balistic gel results and are consistent in POA. It was interesting, I favoered the 150gr.micro from the start for my 9mm but it did hit above poa several inches compared to several other rounds I used in 124 and 112gr. I will say in almost all test instances I have looked at +P underperforms compared to standard pressure loads in the shorter barrelled Shield's. They dont have the barrel length to leverage the additional powder.

what's YOUR definition of "under performing"? those ammo quest videos were all done with a sig 938 which has a three inch barrel and the only real difference between the HST 124gr +P and standard was the slightly less penetration of the +P but still well within the FBI standards. the little bit lighter penetration is due to the higher velocity of the +P which obviously is still present even with the short barrel so....

your assessment of shorter barrels not being able to leverage the powder is not necessarily true anymore. if the ammo is using the modern fast burning powders then they seem to gain the velocity they are supposed to.

I've never seen any Sig round perform great in a test. As far as I know nothing beats Federal HST 124gr.
