Default M&P 40, shoots high on 15 yards.

Hello, is it normal that M&P40 (year of manufacture 2009) shoots high at 15 yards, aprox. 2-3 inches? Ammo Magtech 180 grn. FMJ.
It groups well, but to high.

165gr ammo should do the trick. I have a HP .40 Practical that shoots high with 180gr.

I would suggest bench resting the pistol to see if it still shoots high. I think it is more about getting used to the pistol. You shoot Glocks and the grip angle is different, as is the trigger pull. I would dry fire practice. If you have a laser set up that's even better.

180grn Magtech FMJ
180grn Magtech FMJ PS
180grn Sellier&Bellot FMJ

Yes, mostly I shoot from Glock 17gen4 and POA is the same as POI. On my M&P I installed the smallest backstrap on grip. May be I should try the Middle or even the biggest one?

Try each backstrap and see if there is any difference. Also maybe # 3 would work better. What country do you reside in?

I have the Pro 40 and that thing shot about 4 inches low at 15 yards no matter what I did. i was using my 160 LRN for IDPA so was shooting a bit light to make PF. I don't like to change where I'm aiming with any pistol, I aim as Fig 2 for everything and wasn't going to change for this one. Hell, I don't remember that well anymore so I would probably not remember in a match until I was done. Anyway, go here if you still are having troubles. Smith & Wesson Sights they have a sight height calculator. I got a shorter front sight and my problems were over. Just get a taller front sight of the height they say. Now I love that gun.

All ammo will shoot differently. Which is why target guns come with adjustable sights.
You could.
Get adjustable target sights
Load your own ammo to shoot poa/poi
Or test a bunch of kinds and hopefully find one that shoots close to poi/poa
I would call and ask Smith what weight, brand of bullet is used in there testing to determine sight height. May save you somE time and money.

I'm from Lithuania. So it's quite difficult to call Smith&Wesson and ask about the bullet weight they used to test and zero my pistol.

Use #3. That's the way 3-dot sights are meant to be used.

Lithuania? There are no leaves on the trees and you're all bundled up. That's way too cold for me.

Well, I got curious about Lithuania as I really didn't know much about it. Wikipedia had a good summary. You folks have been through a lot from before WWI and on to today. Good going. Best to you folks.

Never understood why people think defensive hand guns are suppose to shoot tight groups at 15 to 50 yds . If you ever shot someone at that distant odds are you would lose any credibility of a self defense argument . If you want a high end target pistol buy that .

He's not wanting a target pistol, just wants to lower the groups which he said he was happy with. But I agree, shooting someone at 15 yards or longer would be difficult to defend. Buy hey, maybe in Lithuania they get to shoot people further than we do.

Does that pistol have a safety? At the beginning of the video I see the muzzle rise like the OP tried to shoot without disengaging a safety. It's brought back down on target and the shot breaks. I believe that the OP may be heeling the gun, particularly because his shots are stringing vertically.

I would suggest much dry firing with concentrating on the front sight and seeing how it moves at the striker break.

Just to throw into discussion about longer shots w/ pistols. One doesn't always know what one may run into. Tom Gresham discussed this a little while ago on his radio show. Right after an active shooter w/ a rifle was taken down by a cop w/ a pistol at something like 50 yards. Point is we can't control what situations we may be up against so it's not a bad idea to practice longer shots.

Default Jerry

Hi,

great video, thanks.

Few things that jump out: You are grabbing the gun way to low and your wrists are not straight and also not strong.

Watch Jerry Miculek's youtube video how to grip a semi auto and lock the wrists more to prevent the muzzle from flipping up.

Much more pressure from the left hand locking it. 70% of the force comes from the left hand.

That should bring your group down and center.

Cops can shoot at someone at those distances because it is their jobs . I am civilian . If I shot at someone at the distance I am going to jail . I practice at practical distances . If I wanted to shoot long distant targets I would buy a target gun . Everyone wants a target shooter out of the box but ammo also has a lot to do with accuracy .
