Default Buy a M&P 22 Compact, or Walther PPQ .22 ?

I've shot the Walther P22 and found it very nice except for the mag release.

Have handled a CCP and a Creed in 9mm, but never a Walther PPQ in 9mm
or .22 caliber.

Do have a new Shield PC .45, but have never handled a S&W M&P .22 full-size or their Compact.

Which .22 should I buy?

I have not shot the Walther. I own and have shot a couple thousand rounds of CCI Mini Mag RN, without any failures of any kind. Great gun.

I gave my son a Walther P22 when he graduated from college more than a decade ago, and always thought it was a nice little gun. But IIRC it was picky about ammo, and always felt a bit cheesy.

When I decided I needed a better 22 plinker (the 22 coversion kit for a Makarov was sort of a kludge) I didn't even think about the Walther but did rent both the Ruger SR22 and the M&P 22 Compact at the same range session. Side by side, I thought the Ruger felt a bit less solid than the S&W, and the safety worked backwards from any 22 autoloader I've ever owned.

So 22 Compact it was. It's an absolutely delightful gun to shoot, and has eaten every round I've fed it after the first range session, when I think it stovepiped a couple of cases. But it also had a peculiar magazine catch issue when new - that caused mags not to latch fully every time they were inserted - which may have been part of the initial problem. S&W fixed that promptly, and the gun is now a real favorite. Absolutely no regrets over the choice, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Bought the M&P compact for my wife and it has performed perfect so far through over 600 rounds. I only use CCI ammo, but others have told me their M&P functions flawlessly with other ammo. This is a fun gun to shoot!

Both are good guns for their intended market.

Here are a couple of targets with my S&W M&P Compact 22, fired this morning, from 7 and 15 yards. CCI Mini Mags.

Good luck choosing. Don't think you can go wrong either way.

Peace

Picking up my M&P 22 COMPACT tomorrow. I've heard that they are the most reliable 22 auto loaders money can buy. They are fairly accurate. They are well.......Compact. well made. Basically the bomb.

However that's just what I heard...

Was able to see a .22 Compact in person today.

Also a M&P .22 pistol. Liked the full-sized .22 the best.

Might be trading for a new one.

Aren't the S&W M&P 22s and the Walther PPQ 22 both made by Umarex?

Geoff
Who is a curious fellow, with a P22 in the gun box.

Old FS M&P 22 was an import, likely Umarex.

The new, better Compact 22 is designed and made in the USA.
This is the one you want, a great little pistol.

I was faced with the same dilemma. I ended up going with the M&P because it was cheaper ($249 at Brownells). I actually went and picked mine up today and put some rounds through it with my silencer. It ran like a champ. Haven't tried to shoot for accuracy yet.

The PPQ 22 has a better trigger and a better barrel from what I've seen, but I don't own one. Can't go wrong with either.

I bought my son an M&P compact last Christmas. It probably has about 1,500 rds through without a hiccup. He loves it and so do I. Nice trigger and very accurate.

I can't think of a single downside to the M&P Compact .22 - other than the fact that it's not a 2213! Mine has been 100% although with far fewer rounds thru it than other posters here. I've tried two kinds of dummy .22 rounds and cannot make it hang up on feeding - S&W really did their design work with the Compact!

I agree. I have the M&P 22 fullsize made by Walther . I need a new firing pin spring. S&W does mot have any in stock. I cannot order it from Walther. They will not accept my order. Must be ordered through S&W. My order has been on back order since 7/5/17.
I recommend buying only made in the USA.

I have the 22c with thousands of rounds through it. Great gun. Great training platform to start people on also.

I have a M&P 22 compact and it is an awesome little .22, Shoots a lot better then the Walther p22 I've shot in the past and so far the best .22 semi auto pistol i have shot. Oh and unlike the full size M&P 22 the compact version is made in the US.

I would strongly disagree with those folks that call the Compact accurate. Mine has been back to the factory twice for accuracy problems. They have replaced the barrel twice. The last time they sent me a picture of the test target that showed a group that measured 2 and 1/4 inch. at 15 yards. They say that is acceptable accuracy. I don't think so. My Compact has been put in the safe until I can get rid of it. This is the first S&W I have ever owned that I was not pleased with.

I have both. No comparison...M&P Compact has proven itself here with thousands of rounds through it. If the Walther had not been a gift, it would have BEEN gone!

Ha, my Walther p22 is also a gift.
After buying and shooting it very little, l gave it to a friend that wouldn't accept money for helping me out.

Last august I took my girls for their first time to the range. We were visiting my father in law in Miami, with anticipation for the visit and knowing that the girls wanted to start shooting he bought a M&P compact at the Miami Shot Show.

My girls were trilled with the gun! I think it is a nice little pistol to introduce youngsters into shooting activities.

I recommend a Bersa Thunder .22 since I REALLY like mine, it has excellent ergonomics, great DA and SA trigger pull, and is very accurate. I love that it has a real honest to goodness steel slide but you must use .22 ammo with enough power to push that heavy thing. With CCI Blazer ammo it's 100% reliable. I always wear it when hunting or just walking in the woods and prefer it as a Kit gun to my Smith M34 or M63.

I have a FS M&P 22. IIRC it was made by Walther to S&W specs. Mine is a great pistol. The grip feels very much like a FS M&P 9. I've had no problems whatsoever. My pistol likes hotter ammo. I bought mine new and one thing I found is that group size was quite large initially. However, after about 400-500 rounds the groups tightened up considerably. Based on some older threads in this sub-forum, that is not unusual. Just something to be aware of if you buy a new FS.
