M&P 9C ammo choices
I picked up a nice used M&P 9c today. As I was checking out, I asked for some 124gn ammo. They gave me 3 boxes of Win., which I didn't look at too closely. I got home and realized it was the 9mm NATO ammo. Is this stuff +P rated ammo? I think I have read that before. Is the 9C good to go with hot ammo, or should I save this for something else?

Not +P, but it is a little stouter than average commercial ammo. You should be good to go. I've shot a bunch of NATO spec ammo both Winchester and other brands with no issues.

Thanks. I just saw an ad for it that said it was 10% higher pressure then std. ammo, therefore +P. But who believes everything in ads?

"The SAAMI pressure for 9mm Luger ammo is around 35,000 PSI, and C.I.P (think European SAAMI) rates 9mm Luger ammo at 34,080 PSI. According to documentation, the 9mm NATO rounds are pressured at 36,500 PSI (again according to CIP). That means that when compared to standard 9mm ammo, the 9mm NATO ammo is running a higher pressure, analogous to a 9mm +P load, which SAAMI rates around 36,000 PSI."

Do you have a picture? There is Winchester NATO
You'll be fine with +p just don't make it your main ammo.

+p or +p+ is not recommended. Its in the manuel. Shooting 1 box wont break the gun. If it is, it will say on the box. Look carefully.

"“Plus-P” (+P) ammunition generates pressures in excess of the
pressures associated with standard ammunition. Such pressures
may affect the wear characteristics or exceed the margin of safety. Use of “Plus-P” ammuunition may result in the need for more frequent service.
• “Plus-P-Plus” (+P+) ammunition must not be used in Smith &
Wesson firearms. This marking on the ammunition designates that..."
+P isn't recommended, +P+ is forbidden.
The thing is, the gun was designed around the 40 S&W which has a standard pressure of 35,000 psi, so I bet shooting solely +P 9mm wouldn't wear the gun out any faster the shooting standard 40 cal in the 40cal version.

I was looking at some of our spare defense mags and realized all our loaded defense ammo is at least 10 yrs old.
So I just ordered 500 rounds of +P for our defense pistols. All the guns and all the spare mags will be loaded with it. I will shoot maybe 3 mags just to be sure it works fine and then it will likely sit for 10 years. Our regular practice shooting is done w/ whatever is the least expensive ammo I can find. Once I have swapped out all the decade old stuff, I will shoot it in one of our Beretta 92s w/ a buffer in place. I figure, if I ever need the gun for defense I want a little extra power. But I don't want to wear the guns out shooting it all the time.

Thanks guys. I really like the feel of this pistol and look faoward to getting out to the range with it. Common sense would seem to be to load the hot ammo when it's in the night stand, or in the car with me. At the range I'll stick to std plinking ammo. I will shoot a mag or two of the NATO stuff, just to familiarize myself with how it feels.
This gun was dirty when I got it home. The shop I bought it from never cleans used guns that are traded in. But they give me pretty good deals. I've cleaned it once, I may do it again before I take it out.
Thanks again for the good info.

Given you have 3 box's of the NATO stuff, I'd see if I could exchange the ammo for something you'll like. (i.e. 124 gr std pressure, commercial).
The NATO stuff isn't really great for anything really .That includes defense. It's hot but uses a poor bullet choice.
