M2.0 9mm 5 inch FDE review
Hey guys. I attended a "smith and wesson days" event today at my LGS. I talked them down to $525 purchase price. I LOVE this gun. I realize there is another thread with someone talking about some FTE issues but mine was flawless today and I am VERY impressed with what Smith has done with this model and the M2.0 line all together.
- The trigger is just as amazing as what we've been hearing from just about everyone. Its VERY close to the P320 in my opinion for best trigger on the semi auto market right now.
- Accuracy, wow. I am NOT a great shooter but I am awesome with this beauty of a gun. The recoil is amazingly easy to manage. Part of that is due to the long slide, part due to the added weight to the front, part due to the low bore axis.
- The gun just looks cool.
- Oh and all the rebate stuff? Yes please!

M2.0 9mm 5 inch FDE review
$525 ? seems a bit steep. I've seen it online for $450 also at the local gun fair. Still a nice acquisition congrats !!

It's a small shop that does not see the same deals come their way as bigger stores. 525 from 599 is a big deal to them.

Mine arrived yesterday, ($429 w/ free shipping) and I can't wait to get it to the range. It feels great in the hand, and I really feel like the trigger is much improved.

I like these also but can't seem to find one locally to actually handle/inspect. They seem to be a fairly popular version. Gotta get one!

That is why I jumped on it. The S&W rep brought one to test shoot, and the shop had one in stock which he saved for me assuming id like my test firing. I am super impressed with it, great shooter and a great tactical 9mm for home defense.
When Crimson trace finally comes out with the M2.0 compatible lasers I will be putting one on there. The factory sights are great too, i might consider night sights. However with the laser installed those wouldnt be needed so much.

I'm thinking about a 1.0 in the 5" barrel, our LGS has a used CORE model for $515 but it has an aftermarket trigger by the look of it. Looks to be in mint condition.
I'd consider the 2.0 if they did a version without the thumb safety.

Ray1970 has it right. Why mess with a perfectly good gun?
Of course you can do what you want. That's the beauty of a free society.
I'm glad you like it and glad that it's working well for you. I wish you many thousands of trouble free rounds.

Ditto. I'm constantly baffled at this apparant obsession so many folks seem to have with goobering-up their stuff in as many ways as possible.
And yeah, that FDE looks really friggin' cool !

That's why I like the FDE. Looks cool and it's different. i would buy one in the regular finish if available but there is a certain `elan with the FDE.

Gun looks nice but it is "Cerakote" which wears off quick, can of Krylon lasts longer!

You do realize there are youtube videos and a phone call away Smith will send you plugs and instructions how to remove the safety right? There is a guy on youtube doing it in 7 minutes. Seriously easy.

Wrong. Its armornite. If you are unfamiliar with it, it is pretty much the strongest finish you can possibly put on a gun. You could seriously throw this thing down the street like a stone skipping off a pond and the finish will not scratch.

Even if it were Cerakote, that is a very tough finish. I have one gun that I had Cerakoted in FDE. Even with a bunch of use, it's still scratch free.

OMG! We need to have a discussion about finishes!
Armornite, Melonite, Tenifer ec.. are Clear "Finishes which U will never see unless U remove/scrape/wear off the top finish.
All of these finishes are used to help gun be corrosion resistant and they impregnate in to the metal and after that the outer/visible finish is applied, which can be park, polycoat or ??
S&W uses a outer finish which is called NVD or Nitride Vapor Deposit which is quite durable, however on the FDE 5" 2.0 version instead of the NVD they use "Cerakote" which is a "Paint'!
Quote!
The 9mm features a super-matte Flat Dark Earth Cerakote finish that is actually applied over the M&P-standard Armornite finish (a corrosion-resistant nitride).
They also use the "Cerakote on some models on the entire Frame!
P.S. Apologies are now being Accepted!

I still dont see the issue here. Even if the Cerakote did start to wear, its not hard, or that expensive to have it re applied at your LGS. So im not sure what negative point you were making here. Bottom line is that the actual armornite is damn near impenetrable.

Tenifer and other salt-bath-nitride finishes are not actually finishes (clear or otherwise), in the commonly understood use of the word. They are not "impregnated" into the metal, they are metal-hardening heat treatments that actually alter the metal at the molecular level, just a few microns deep. A side effect of this is also enhanced corrosion resistence.

Color fill is just a fun thing to do to make your gun look different from every other sitting in the gun case. I enjoy it.

Cerakote is "Paint and when it wears then U see bare Metal (just like on a Car) and U can have a Car repainted but on a Gun which has that Cap needs to br refinished!

True not really finishes but rather a treatment, however everybody even S&W calls it a finish. It penetrate the metal a few Microns (impregnates metal)!

And that's all that matters. It's your gun and you ultimately have to decide, but why not try a Sharpie first? A fine line black Sharpie might look good if done correctly. Then if you don't like it, it would be easy to put some color fill over it.

I really don't understand what your beef is here. Paint, finish or micro erbundium treatment, what difference does it make? They all wear if used.
It is my wish that all gun owners utilize their guns as much as possible. Go to the range and have some fun. Put paint on them if you like. Shoot in competitions or just to hear them go bang. Just get out and enjoy them! Every mark on them is a badge of honor.
I use my guns and it shows:

Great to know. I plan to put a bunch of rounds through mine soon. Waiting for Crimson trace to come out with m2.0 laserguards and one of those will be going on it as well.

I have never owned a 5 inch 9mm before. What is the feedback, especially when new, about grain weight? Is it better to shoot heavier loads with longer slides? Or does it not matter? Any feedback there?

No,you're not listening. It doesn't "penetrate" or "impregnate" in the normal sense of the words. As I said, it alters the metal at the molecular level. You're looking at this like stain soaking into wood, whish isn't what's happening here.

actually, nitriding turns the metal sort of a gray color but other than that your right.

or the most common is just the final step of QPQ where they dip it in the salt bath for about 30 mins or so and then quench again in a solution that turns the suface black. its a black oxide

where did you hear this? vapor deposition nitriding is more commonly known as PVD (Physical vapor deposition) or ionbond (more of a brand name, kinda like melonite) and i'm relatively sure S&W doesn't use this technique. its a great technique for nitriding and IS actually a finish but its more expensive than just using the QPQ method for blackening so I can't see them using it without making a big deal out of how cool it is. and it is cool they can make all these different shades and colors just by adjusting the gas mixes without affecting the durability. and the durability is amazing. almost as durable as a regular nitride treatment I believe and only a couple microns thick so no interference to speak of

He's wrong about a lot of things, but with nitriding, carbon and nitrogen are actually impregnated into the existing metal making it stronger and giving it higher lubricity and corrosion resistance. it does happen at a molecular level but its basically taking carbon and nitrogen from the salt bath mix and sort of wedging itself in between and bonding with the existing iron and other metals making up the alloy.

that actually looks kinda nifty! I color filled my shield once just for the hell of it but once it started to wear off I never did it again.

It tickles me to see how obsessed some are with looks. Hey it looks fine, now go dirty it up (by shooting of course). I don't have a Cerakoted gun, but I'm convinced that it is a durable finish and I wouldn't shy away from it. Actually I do have a 1911 mainspring housing that is Cerakoted. A very gun savvy buddy of mine has M&P's and really likes them. I've shot his modified Shield and it shoots and functions well, but feels like I'm holding onto a piece of 1/4" plywood (grip too skinny). Another very savvy fellow just spoke about the tiny parts in them that are subject to rusting and failure. He said he'd never depend upon one for a duty gun. With that conflicting info, I'm on the fence about the full size M&P's.
