M&P 9mm Shield Unable to Field Strip
Recently purchase a M&P 9mm shield. Prior to taking it to the range for the first time I was able to field strip with no issues. Took it to the range this past weekend put about 150 rounds with no issues at all. When I got home, I attempted to field strip and have not been able to get the slide off the frame. There is a silver wire right above the take down lever that is preventing the slide to come off. Has this happened to anyone? Should I contact Smith or a local gun smith?

My best guess is it somehow wasn't put together correctly last time it was assembled. I might be wrong since "field stripping" is pretty much idiot proof. I sold my last Shield or I'd pop mine apart and see if I had any ideas. Not sure if my full size M&P would be similar or not.

I don't think it was anything you did field stripping ,something broke , a spring or debris got inside somehow. Contact S&W customer service and send it in.

Your problem is probably the same as described in this post - your takedown lever retaining wire has come out of its groove in the locking block (see below).
Let S&W fix the problem unless you feel very comfortable about your ability to move the wire enough to allow takedown (without causing any other damage) and to assess whether there has been any damage to the wire or other parts of the gun.

My nephew's did the same thing. The Slide Stop spring slipped out of the groove causing it to hang up the slide. He sent his back to S&W and they fixed it. Others have been able to take a screwdriver and push the spring back into the groove.

I'd send it back without tryin' to fix it, if'un it came outta its slot once, it'll come out again.

Yes, it has been seen before. Do indeed send it to S&W. It shouldn't do this and will pop out again if you stuff it back in.

It functions fine. The yellow wire is meant to push down to lower the sear for the slide to come off. Or, one you make sure its unloaded, just lock the slide back and pull the trigger... the slide will come right off.

Exact scenario as mine:
Not the start I was hoping for with my new 9mm Shield
Same issue with my Shield 9mm this year. Spoke with S&W rep, told him what was happening, tried a few of his suggestions, he emailed me a prepaid shipping label. They replaced the slide stop and shipped it back to me. Worked fine after that.

Did you even read the OP or look at the pictures? This is not what he's talking about.

My OTB Shield 9mm wouldn't field strip, period. Got to the point where the slide should have come off the frame but no dice. Can't see anything out of order anywhere. It will still rack to the full back and locked open position but won't go forward to release from the frame. Sent email to S&W but haven't heard back. Will post when the problem is solved.
