Shield 2.0 almost here?
The Firearm Blog teased a story four days ago that S&W was about to release an updated 2.0 version of popular M&P Shield. Details were sparse. But the article suggested that it would be very soon (days from the time the article was posted). I saw a YouTube vid saying the same thing.
Maybe the recent rebates were clearing inventory for the new version.

They've formally announced they will have several new introductions in the next months. Not 100% sure but I seem to remember them saying some of them would be expansions of their "2.0 series". I'll be very surprised if there isn't a Shield and possibly a rework of the BG380.

Dang! Now that I've got a Shield it will be obsolete! I'll have to run out and buy a new one.

Well isn't that what most M&P 1 owners did, however the 2.0 has so many new features over the 1.0!
But I really don't see many improvements on the Shield that are needed, besides the mag spring issue!

Better grip
Stiffer front frame
Better trigger/firing system
Better recoil spring assembly
Better barrel/slide fit
Optional 10-round 9mm mag with proper immovable extension
Fewer sharp edges & corners
And leave the dam slide stop as it is!
Other than these, I can't see much to improve either.

We were talking about it a lot at work today. The new Shield and Taurus spectrum are the new products that we're preparing for.

Well, if they fix the mag spring issue, there shouldn't be any reason for them to not send us all some new replacement springs when we call CS and ask for them.......uh.......right??

I would love to see an ambi slide stop, and the ability to switch the mag release over for lefties like myself. These are the reasons i just sold my shield 9. For now it's back to carrying my fs 9.

Hoping the bg380 is good enough to make my full switch to M&P. For now I will keep my LCP.

I'll stick with my Shield. No problems. Once I learned the trigger all is well.

Just sent my shield for a service.
Wish they send me a 2.0 in return.

Since I don't jump on every "latest and greatest" item that comes along, I will be happy with my original Shields. If after a time the 2.O versions prove themselves to be better, I may consider picking one up.

I plan on buying a shield using a gift card to Bass pro that I was given, but now I might wait to see if the 2.0 does come out.

This is one of the major problems I have with modern disposable plastic wonder guns. Planned obsolescence. Actually, more like accelerated obsolescence. Not necessarily in the meaning of them no longer working or being worn out... but just that it is so easy to make changes in injection molded plastic and stamped metal that it almost becomes necessary for marketing purposes alone so you don't get left behind. If the competition is changing, you must change too or get left behind and watch sales suffer.
Yes, I know it's a different world today. Things happen fast. There is always an "improvement" (or at least a "change") to be made. Take a look at the smartphone industry to see how quickly what you bought today will be obsolete tomorrow. My old Shields are worth practically nothing now just because new ones are on the way! "Old" ones have been blown out with huge rebates to make room for the new (which will themselves be blown out with rebates someday before ya know it).
And yes, I am old and living in the past... a traditionalist. One nice thing about all-metal guns: You don't have to worry so much about them going obsolete on you tomorrow... since them young whippersnapper folks already think they are obsolete today!

I normally don't want to be a 'Beta-Tester' for new model/design pistols, but I did take a chance with the Shield, when it came out back in 2012 and I'm very glad that I did.
Having written that... For me to swap mine for a 2.0, it would need to be leaps and bounds above my original.
S&W seems to do pretty good about not releasing a new product until most (if not all) bugs have been worked out.
Like those who line up for days to get the Very Latest iPhone, there will be those who will lament that S&W isn't pumping out 2.0 Shields fast enough for them (and watch prices soar out of control on GunBroker... again). There will also be those who may call it cr@p because it doesn't live up to THEIR (exaggerated) expectation, no matter how good it may be.

No gun is obsolete that still is capable of performing it's intended purpose. That being, firing a bullet and striking a target where the operator intended and repeating the process without stoppage. That being said, younger folks must have the latest and greatest. They spend more on cell phones and calling plans, than us oldsters do on car payments!

Well, if Smith & Wesson's repair and customer service is as horrible as lots of people on this forum think it is, that's entirely within the realm of possibility.
Good luck.

Buy a 2.0 compact instead. that way all your m&p mags are universal for that caliber.
The added capacity could save your life as well.
Either way enjoy

I'll respectfully disagree. In a personal self-defense situation, training will save your life.

I would jump all over a Shield 380. It wouldn't even have to be downsized that much for me. I looked at the BG380 for a long time when they came out, but too many issues.

If a Shield 380 were about the same size as the 9mm, what would be the attraction?

Lower recoil for my wife for one, and I just think it would be cool.

A 380 Shield would have substantially less recoil, it would be ridiculously easy to rack the slide, and it might have a significant reduction in weight.

I wonder how aggressively textured a 2.0 Shield will be. The first time I shot my 2.0 compact I thought I was going to have to sand it down some but it was OK the second time I shot it (Less rounds, got used to it some). I view the 2.0 compact as a home defense and range gun with an option to carry if for some reason I feel I need a larger gun than I normally carry.
But a Shield with that aggressive texture would rub against my skin. Not really what I want in a carry gun.
I ended up with a Glock 43 for a carry gun because I shot it better than the Shields I tried and it is lighter and smaller. But I really like my 2.0 compact and will give a 2.0 Shield a try if it is not too heavy and and S&W does not get carried away with the texturing.

I would love a shield 380 that competes with the glock 43.

I'm not a big fan of Taurus guns, but my wife's 738 TCP with stainless steel slide and pink plastic, is very lightweight, the trigger pull is very nice & light. She shoots it very well at short distances (7 yards). It has been very reliable. One thing I found about my wife, is that she doesn't want to carry any more weight in her already heavy purses than is absolutely necessary. I have finally learned not to pick out any gun purses for her or any other lady marketed guns or gun accessories.

I would be interested in guess but would be more interested if they have a fire sale on all the 1.0 version including the shields. Something better than a $75 rebate say like $150
I have no problem buying last year's models so........
If a 2.0 shield came out at some point I would consider it but my original shields work great and do what they are suppose to do very well.

What akdude said.
Not a lot of people who already have a Shield are going to run out and get one of these, I bet.

Oh wait... They're NOT out yet... The Brownalls sight say Pre-Order!
But yeah... It's official.
$449.99 ??? That's pretty much what the MSRP was for the Shield back when it 1st came out.
Of course, the world is full of people who just NEED to be the 1st on their block to get one... and I bet they will be starting their threads soon.

I'd say the lack of ambi might be the biggest oversight. I think they would have guaranteed quite a few sales if that option were on the 2.0 pistols. I really wonder how many people will want to swap out their current shields (I sure don't).

I'm glad that the people who want something different will be able to get something a little different.
And I'm glad that people who like the original model were able to get it at very attractive prices.

They already had a fire sale IMO. I got my Shield for $199 after rebate.

The original worked because it was at the right price the new one at $445
will be difficult to sell. The shield has to get well under $400 say $349, then it will sell and probably sell very well.
A 380 would be a big hit but it must be smaller by about 20%.

You can still get a really good deal on 1.0 Shields. Here's one that comes with 4 mags for $288 FS, with 40 bucks worth extra mags that yields an effective price $248.

It's the place I got mine from with no problems.
I imagine once they've cleared out their 1.0 inventory and the eager beavers have all gotten 2.0s, the price of the new version will decline to what the 1.0s were going for last year.

I pre-ordered a .40 Shield. 2.0, and I am thinking of getting another original Shield at $288, that's $308 after FFL transfer.
