Question Shield 9mm 2000 round maintenance?

Well, my Shield 9 has crossed over the 2K round mark. Any special maintenance I should consider? Replacement parts? I've only field stripped and cleaned other then once removing the striker and cleaning that area out.

I've considered taking it to my gunsmith and have him do a complete tear down, clean and inspect, but don't really now if that's warranted. By the way, I've only had two documented issues, both FTE and both with Aquila 124gr ammo. Everything else has been perfect.

I'm near 2k rounds on my full size (and 1.3k on my Shield) and as both run flawlessly i expect i'll continue to just clean as needed. If no issues i dont see a reason yet to tear them apart.

At 5k rounds maybe as perhaps the RSA spring could need a replacement (not even sure on that); and maybe that's a good time to totally take it apart and clean it out. And for that I'd use a gunsmith as I'm not comfortable getting past the regular disassembly stage and would hate to affect how it works if not properly put back together

Unless you have a failure, there is no need to completely disassemble an M&P periodically. My competition M&P has over 50K with one striker assembly failure. I have a spare striker assembly, recoil spring assembly, and trigger spring in my match kit. I am beginning to think the RSA will outlast the gun.

Yea, at 2K it's still a baby. Just run it and clean it like you normally would. I 'd be thinking about springs in another 10K or so.

No. 2k mark is where I consider a gun reliable for carrying. Ok, 1000 is fine but another 1000 to confirm isn't a bad idea.

There's nothing to change or do until you hit about the 5000k mark at which point you may want to start thinking about changing the recoil spring IF it's giving trouble. If not at least have one on hand.

My carry gun has around 8k rounds from the last 10 years. Before that it was a cop gun since 2003. Haven't touched a thing. Runs great, I have parts on hand

Somewhere between 2000 and 5000, the trigger return spring and the recoil spring assembly should probably be replaced. The trigger return spring because its chances of breaking go up with repetitions; the recoil spring assembly because it gets weaker, and the frame takes more battering as it weakens. Somewhere along the line, the entire slide lock lever (and spring) could be replaced as well.

I say 2000-5000 because I do not personally have enough data, nor have I seen authoritative recommendations, to pinpoint the exact number of cycles at which these parts should be replaced. But I've read plenty of anecdotal observations that it is a good idea at some point along there. The cost of these parts is low enough that doing it a bit early isn't very painful.

Nothing special needs to be swapped out or replaced, unless a particular part is causing problems.
I did get a spare RSA at about the 7K round mark, only because a few people here were sure they needed to be swapped at 5K. But... Mine's closing in on 20K rounds now and still running well with it's original RSA and trigger return springs.

Also... Unless you're sloppy with your cleaning solvents and oils, letting them drip into the striker channel, you really don't even need to disassemble and clean that area.

I don't even bother with trigger return springs. They hardly ever brake.

I called Customer Service awhile back to ask the question on my FS. I was approaching 5000 rounds. They told me they recommended replacing the recoil spring and mag springs at 5000 rounds. I had already bought some new factory mags so that was taken care of. The rep sent me a new recoil spring free of charge.
