Strange mini-kaboom
M&P 9, purchased 2012, ~5000 shots.
This happened after the last shot in magazine, when slide locked.
Slide release handler just fell off. There is not much force acting on that particular part. Probably, pre-existing crack?

Not exactly a kaboom but odd breakage. I'd guess defective material. Did Smith send you a free one? Cheap enough part to just buy a new one, but really shouldn't cost you.

Do you use your thumb to release the slide or do you sling shot it? That looks like metal fatigue in a stamped part. S&W never intended that part to be used as a release, although many shooters do so.

S&W will not send you a 'free' one but will sell you the part. You have to send them the gun for repair.

I have had one break also S&W did send me a new one. I never let the slide slam forward on an empty mag. If the slide isn't grabbing a round and pulling it out of the mag up the feed ramp and into the chamber it slams shut with to much force.

I already replaced it with a new one from MidwayUSA, no problem, but I just was surprised with this sort of failure. Sending it back to the factory would take months for sure - I had that experience sending my Walther PPK for free repair, they fixed it in 1.5 month. Package from Midway arrived in 3 days, replacement took 20 minutes

Nope, the identical part, I don't care for any improvements. What to improve here?

The slide stop is a stamped part that is folded and bent on a number of jigs. The bend to get that tab down from vertical almost 180 degrees makes that joint relatively weak, but they rarely break because the design is strong enough.
Use it any way you like, even as a release. I have used the tab that way on many guns for decades and have never had one break. If it breaks, it does not stop the gun from functioning and is relatively cheap and easy to replace. I believe S&W would send you one for free if you email them the photo. Warranty issue.
