I know our local Sheriff's Office has switched to the Shield 2.0 .40 caliber.. My brother said he was issued one when he went for qualifications the first of December...Seems like everyone like them and no problems yet....

The Sheriff issued a Shield for a duty pistol? I would need to see proof of that before I believed it.If it is true it is a poor choice for a duty pistol.

You would think a lot of dept that went to M/P, 5 or 6 years ago would be up grading to the newer guns , but i never see or read much about this .

Well catcus... you are going to have to take my word for it, that is unless you want to drive down here and check it out for yourself. I looked at my brothers new issue, and it is indeed a Shield 2.0 in .40 caliber.. So, if you are not going to make a trip to Florida, I guess you will just have to not believe it...

Using 7 rounders, let's say they carry 7+1 with 3 spare mags. That's a total of 29 rounds. That's 2 less than a full size .40 with 1 spare mag.

I'd think a 40 Shield would make a fine duty gun for a detective or other plainclothes type. But on a duty belt, it would look ridiculously small.

Looking at Firearms of the USA they issue M&P 40 but doesn't designate shield or fs. Looking at thier uniform and appearance document issued this past sept. they issue 2.5 inch basket weave duty belt. Comparing pictures on facebook knowing the size of their duty belts no it's not a shield.

However, they may issue them for plainclothes, detectives, parole, juvenile officers etc. Those who are less likely to get into a firefight or need small for concealment purposes. It's not uncommon to have different issue for different divisions.

Maybe it's an issued BUG or off duty gun?

Would NOT want to carry a shield as my primary. Hell it's not even enough capacity to make it a viable edc in my opinion. I'll stick with the 9c or LARGER for capacity. That police department is at a great disadvantage in my opinion.

Easy for you to say since you probably live in free America. Some of us can only have 10+1 so the Shield is as good option.

Back in the mid to late eighties my Agency carried the HK P7M8 as a duty weapon. Small but effective; never really concerned myself with how it looked on my belt.

I like a full size gun , I can get a quick grip on it from about any way . I have the L/E package shield with night sights and 3 mags and love it , never a problem and shoots real good for a small gun .

We tried out the 2.0 9mm.........and passed.

We used the full size M&P 45 and had a miserable experience.

Dumped it and went with the Gen 4 model 17.

World's better.....matter of fact, most local agencies have ditched the M & P.

Thats what I have been reading , but they seem like a good platform . I did pick up a new 2.0 full size 40 cal , night sights and 3 mags . I do not know who was getting them , but I got a real good deal on mine , maybe they changed and decided on 9mm guns .

What made the M&P a miserable experience? Was it a matter of preference or were there reliability issues?

My Dept replaced our Beretta 92Gs (after decades) with the full size the M&P 40 (w/o safety). The M&Ps were replaced after about three or four years with our current Gen4 Glock17. SWAT went with Sig P220 after about 6 months with the M&P (due to "issues" with them).

I’ve heard of LE carrying full size and compact pistols as the primary duty guns, but never a subcompact. Low capacity, no light or laser rail, short barrel and sight radius, less of a grip. It just doesn’t compute.

So what are the major differences in the 2.0 40 M&P, and where did you find one for 345.00, LOL, locally I'm at least a 100 higher than that?

Could you elucidate? List problems? I am truly curious, cause, though I don't have either at the moment, I always thought that the M&P felt and pointed better. The Glock has the grip angle of a P08 Luger, and I hate it. Had an early M&P 9mm and had no problems in 600 rd.s of various ammo......

Colorado State Patrol issues the M&P .40 and is currently switching from the 1.0 to the 2.0, also in .40 caliber.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has issued the M&P for around a decade. Recruits have been getting the 2.0 for over a year and the department is in the process of converting all of the original M&Ps to the 2.0.

That’ll eventually be around 10,000 guns... give or take.

I can't speak for LE departments and their experiences but it has been my understanding that Glock has a lot of contracts over the years because they will sell to LE cheaper than others including S&W. I have nothing against Glock and owned a gen 3 19 for a while. It performed fine but I like my M&P's better.

I know Maricopa Co. SO, AZ just replaced their first generation M&Ps with the M2.0, California Highway Patrol is carrying M&Ps, Fresno Co. SO, CA is carrying them as well. I've heard they are the issued duty weapon for Los Angeles Co. SO, as well. The M2.0 seems to be doing pretty well in law enforcement circles. If I were still active, I know it would be a hard choice between the M2.0 and the Glocks were issued at my department before I retired.

Detroit PD has begun the transition to 2.0 9mm from the Gen 1 40's we have been carrying since 2009.

As far as I know, the Washington State Patrol transitioned to the 2.0 some time back. There have been some problems with them (firing pin channel getting all messed up and keeping them from firing, IIRC) requiring armorer staff to drop everything to do aggressive PM. My client agency issues Glocks, but some of the crew have gone to M&Ps and like them. (They have PODA option - used to be pretty heavy presence of 1911s.)

I have a PC Shield 4" with RDS and like it; a friend bought one too and has been favorable in his reviews. I've considered a bigger M&P with RDS but can't justify it; I have too much time and $$ in glock platforms and support gear.

My local Sheriff's office issues them, and I know several deputies carry Shields off-duty.

I bought a Detroit Pd .40 from Buds about two years ago for $309 shipped that came in the box with 3 magazines and was basically new condition, trigger pull was decent and night sights still glowed. I liked it a LOT but prefer guns like that with a thumb safety.

I bought an unissued Detroit PD 1.0 M&P .40 with the box, night sights, 3 mags, lock, paperwork, fired cartridge, etc., for $299 from BUD'S GUNS about 3 years ago.

World's better.....matter of fact, most local agencies have ditched the M & P.
Wow. I never came back and checked this thread. I thought most here were well versed on what the problems our agency had with the M & P.

Quality was horrible. Almost everyone had at least 2 or 3 issued and replaced. Finsh wearing and or flaking off, rust on barrels, slides, and magazines.

Front sights falling off. Broken extractors. Broken springs of all types. Broken off take down levers. Broken strikers. Failure to fire. Failure to feed. Failure to extract/eject.

As I said, the entire inventory was replaced at least once completely, and a couple times in large lots.

Biggest joke was they wanted like $725 to purchase when we replaced them. I think maybe 3 people bought them.

One of the best days of my career was when I threw WSD6545 into a large cardboard box and drew BERH588.

I wanted to like it so bad, but it was just pure hot garbage. Period. Many, if not most, of the agencies in my area that initially adopted it, have replaced it with Glocks or SIGs. These are all agencies that historically carried S & Ws. I mean, we issued the 4566 before the M & P.

I understand people get upset (especially those that are fiercely brand loyal) when I relate this story. I am a HUGE S & W fan (I probably own 25-30 3rd gennies) and have duty carried one for a good bit of time.

However, in MY EXPERIENCE (so everyone doesn't freak out) the M & P leaves a lot to be desired.

The running joke was "I hope I don't have to pull it, because that means my life depends on it". Almost to an officer, everyone has been extremely happy with the Glock transition.
