Lightbulb S&W M&P 1.0 models discontinued??

With the 2.0 models officially on the market, I am sure we will eventually see less and less of the 1.0 models in circulation for sale. Any official word from S&W as to when they will no longer be offering them? I love my Shield and 9c, and want to make sure I have some replacement parts before they become scarce, particularly for the 9c.

I typically keep extra RSA’s and Mags for all my firearms, but would anyone else recommend something to keep handy?

Thanks I’m advance!

Very good point. I think alot of the parts are interchangeable. I put an apex 1.0 trigger in a 2.0 and it worked fine. Have to look into this. I love the simplicity of the m&p.

While S&W hasn't made an official statement (that I've heard), it's obviously something that might be asked, now that the 2.0 has been released (and is being expanded upon).

However, consider that the "original" M&P is still being produced and ordered by LE agencies.

LAPD has been issuing M&P 9's to academy cadets, but the existing previously-issued (and authorized optional) weapons are still in-service (until such time as they may require replacement).

LASD's order isn't quite fulfilled, yet (it had a 5 year estimate for completion). The bulk of their order was for M&P 9's, although I was then told a small number of M&P 40's were also ordered.

All models, last I heard, remained the "original" model.

The most recent large agency order I've heard about was the CHP order, and they deliberately ordered the "original" models.

Then, consider that Glock still produces Gen3 & Gen4 pistols, at the same time they're producing Gen5 models (although some of their models with some of the Gen5 revisions may not be specifically called Gen5's).

It probably remains to be seen how long S&W corporate considers it financially profitable to continue making the "original" version of the M&P's, and in which models.

I remember when they were just releasing the M&P pistol line, and they had their Sigma and their then-new SD line for the budget minded, non-LE market ... but they hadn't yet "officially" decided whether to keep buying 99 frames from Walther to continue making their licensed SW99/990L series.

I was told by a couple of people at the factory that they were unsure themselves of the fate of the 99's, and were waiting for a corporate announcement of any decision, but it might turn out that they kept the SW99's for a middle-priced plastic pistol option. Well, as it turned out, the 13 year Strategic Alliance with Walther was coming to an end, and Walther apparently had their own plans to become their own importer for US sales, no longer using S&W's Walther America company (except to continue making PPK's for a then-undecided length of time). I was later told that much of the remaining Walther parts stock at S&W was sent to the new Walther importer company.

S&W could finally market their own high-end plastic pistol, carrying the M&P brand, so there was no need for the SW99 series (and production of the standard 99 models had already been stopped, with only the 990L models being produced toward the end).

Then, apparently rather than having the Sigma and the SD being "competing" budget lines, they were eventually "folded" together into the current SD9/40 VE series. It's been many years since I took that original Sigma/9M/380M armorer class (add-on to the 3rd gen class), and I don't know anything about the SD's. When I once asked about a SD armorer class, I was told that since it hadn't ever been intended to be sold to LE, they'd decided not to put together an armorer class. (LE armorers would have an armorer class for the M&P, as that was the model line intended for LE/Gov use.)

So, until S&W corporate releases some official announcement, I'd be inclined to take the hurry up and wait position. Never Say Never, as it were.

I'd not be surprised to see them - like Glock - continue to make and sell all of the models they can sell in both versions, but also perhaps discontinuing any models which fall off in sales. (Which they've often done.)

Dunno.

For some reason, the prices are higher for the 1.0 at my LGS. Since I love my compact 1.0, I would be really happy to snag another one at a good price. But, the 1.0 compact is currently $550 and the 2.0 compact is on sale for $420.

That would suggest that everyone that wanted a Glock 19 has already bought a Glock 19, so S&W has found the sales of the 2.0 not where they hoped.

I suspect that the original compact models will be around for some time because of making the 2.0 larger.

Kinda depends on the consumer being envisioned.

Lots of Glock enthusiasts own more than a single example of their favorite model(s). Wander over to GT and you can find folks who proudly own earlier version G19's, Gen3's, Gen4's, Gen5's and are eagerly awaiting the G19X.

The 2.0 Compact 9 is seemingly selling quite well, from what I've heard. It seems to be attracting interest from G19 owners, too (which was in all likelihood part of the market targeted with its design).

The original M&P "compact" models were more in the traditional sense of S&W's idea regarding compact lines, meaning having a shorter grip frame than the full-size/standard models, with the attendant reduced magazine capacity, with 3.5-3.75" barrels.

The "new" Compact 2.0 is more like a slightly smaller version of the standard M&P9, in the grip frame, still giving owners/users a decent "service" barrel length, but a somewhat shorter grip frame (and a 4th option for a grip backstrap/palmswell insert). It also served to introduce the 2.0 revisions (slide stop lever & tensioning method, trigger bar/sear interface, grip texture, etc).

Considering that the present listing of the original compact models is found under the Law Enforcement section of their website firearm locator, the company may be planning to continue them for LE wanting something for plainclothes/off-duty between the larger M&P's and the Shield line, but may not be pushing them quite so much for the commercial/public buyers?

Dunno. Haven't asked anyone about such things since last Spring, and even when I did at that time, I was told that the company has taken a hard line about any potential leaked info from employees before official statements. I was told by one fellow that they'd been told that if anyone leaked info about the 2.0 before it's official release, that they'd be terminated (regardless of position). The company is getting pretty good about keeping things under wraps until they're ready for info to get out.

In general, I've noticed that prices for 1.0 Short Grips have ticked up recently, but deals are still to be found.

Here's a 9c for $339 + $8: Smith and Wesson M&P9c Compact Black 9mm 3.5-inch 12Rd

And a 40c for $20 more: Smith and Wesson M&P40c Black .40S&W 3.5-inch 10 Rds
