If you want to get to know your Shield, you could do the Burwell DIY trigger job.
S&W M&P Trigger Job
The link above is not Shield Specific, but it's plenty close enough.

There are no real Must Have/Must Do mods

I added a HiViz front sight. I upgraded with an Apex sear and Duty weight trigger spring. Made sure my magazine followers actually work. Made some nice leather holsters. Carry daily.

Yup. Apex sear is a great improvement......at least for me....

This is the modifications I made.
At first you wouldn't think it's useful, but reaching into a gloomy gun safe for a particular gun, it comes in handy.

As a carry gun, I keep the cost down to minimum. If you ever use it you'll have it taken for evidence anyway. No telling how long until (if ever) you'll get it back.
Keep the big dollar mods and investments in the range gun

For the 45 (I don't own the Shield 9), it is fine handling and shooting pistol right out of the box. I did put a FO front sight on mine simply because my eyes are getting worse with age, and one might find NS to be desirable, but the gun runs just fine without any mods.

My Shield 9 has an Apex Duty/Carry kit with the OEM trigger, a Dawson FO front sight and 10-8 all black rear. I recently added a Samson Magwell.

My Shield 45 has an Apex Duty/Carry kit w/trigger, a Dawson FO front sight and a Dawson Carry all black rear sight.

I'll be adding the Apex trigger to the Shield 9 soon. Wasn't sure I'd like the aluminum non-flat faced trigger. I prefer the feel of the polymer Apex trigger.

After shooting my Shield 45 with the aluminum version, I like it fine.

I put a Magguts spring in one of my 8 round mags. It's a 9 round mag now and has worked flawlessly after a 1 mag full break in.

Hi op, my question would be which one do you own or if not, have you shot one yet. I am a firm believer if a gun is new to you then spend some time and run rounds thru it first. Helps see what ‘you’ like or dislike and then go from there.
So if you have spent time with one, what are your thoughts.

My Shield 9 is stock but is a PC model, and my other MP’s are stock as well. I am not on the “mod” team, rather am fine with each in stock trim and would prefer to spend my money on ammo and range time.
Just my .02 of course.

Paint the front sight or replace w/ better low light sights. I painted mine for our dark bedroom hallway, where I might expect to need them to be functional.

I've left the trigger alone and have learned to shoot the gun well enough stock.

Well depends on what your plans are for the gun...I added a Pierce Pinky extension on the 7 rd mag (nice feel)...then I change that to a Stryker Industries EMP +2 so my 7rd mag is now an 9 rd mag. Bought 3 more 8 rd mags and added Hyve +2 extensions to all of them (kinda expensive). Added a Hyve Monarch trigger or you can spend a bit more and go with the Apex. Also added a Hyve mag release extension. Didn't like the idea of the S&W polymer guide rod...so installed an SS Stainless Steel Guide Rod. Are any of these necessary? No...they shoot fine as is. I have the 1.0...added a Hogue grip (or you can add grip tape)...2.0's have full stimpling. Still planning to change out sights to TFO's and maybe a threaded Stainless Steel barrel. Also looking for a extra slide to install a Venom mini reflex sight on (so I still have the original slide untouched). All depends on what your plans are and how much $$$ you wanna spend...but the gun is fine as is too!

Shield 1.0. I changed the sights. I used Wilson Combat gold bead front/blackout rear. I also put a Hogue beaver tail grip on.

I've had my Shield 1.0 for several years, and over time have added a number of mods, not because i thought they were needed, but mainly because I like to "tinker." So I have the Apex duty/carry kit with aluminum trigger. Also added Talon Grips, the textured rubber style, extended all 8 mags both for added capacity and additional grip for my pinkie (all mags are 9+1 now, via MagGuts z-springs and Fixxer grip extenders), Truglo TFO sights, a True Precision barrel, DPM Systems recoil reduction RSA, and a Bastion custom rear slide plate.

As I said, none of this is considered necessary. I recently bought a Shield .45 and don't plan to do anything to it until I've put some time and rounds through it.

Put Talon Grips on my Shield .45. The only other thing I may do someday is get sights that I can see better. For now I painted the front sight orange. It's not the stock sights as much as it is my aging eyes.

Harper, I like you like to tinker. Nothing mechanical I have is stock. Not my truck, the wife's car, computer, etc... I usually try to make the "device" better but also more personal. The Shield I own has an Apex trigger kit, Big Dot XS sights, Crimson Trace Green laser, Magguts +1 in the 7 round mags, Talon grips, and an extended mag release button. Not everything was needed, but the gun handles well for me and I like it.

Take care and shoot straight

I put Talon grips on my 9mm Shield 1.0. Also installed the Apex sear and a Magguts +2 kit in a 7 round mag.

My Shield 45 is factory stock. No changes needed.
