I decided to take the plunge and try my hand at doing a distressed finish on my M&P 9c.

I love the silver, but the brass tone I used for the frame came out more glittery than anticipated. I plan on hitting it with a matte black and sanding the edges back down to let the original FDE show through.

I am sure it's not for everyone, but I'd be glad to hear your thoughts.

I'm not a fan of the "distressed look" on guns. If you want it to look used, use it.

Moreover, this looks like it was a rattle can job. Don't take that badly because we all have to start somewhere. Truth be told, there are very few distressed paint schemes that actually look real. You might get there, but this one isn't there yet. Take it off and try again.

To each his/her own OP. I think the slide came out better than the grip frame did. It is very difficult to do this sort of thing...you have to really be an artist to pull this off. I know I could not do it.

I don't get the whole idea, but as they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To me, it looks like vandalism.

I think I threw up a little in my mouth when I clicked on it.

It seems like it would take less time and effort and be more realistic to drag it down a gravel road tethered behind a vehicle.

Without a doubt, one of the fastest ways to diminish the value of a firearm. A future sale or trade will be difficult so, plan on keeping it for yourself forever.

I'd be lying if I said that some of the responses did not give me a chuckle. No intent to sell, this gun has served me well and I have another 9c with a safety, which will stay factory melonite. I hope that helps the purists sleep a little easier.

Well, I feel compelled to take a slightly different approach. Like most, I don't like the look. However, I do think you did a good job of attaining the look you desired. When I first saw it I thought to myself, "self, that thing looks like someone drug it down the highway behind their vehicle all day". The only person you need to make happy is you. The nice thing about the rattle can jobs is they are easy to do and easy to change until you get it the way you want it.

It looks like something my girlfriend would have designed with an idea off of pinterest in the "rustic arts & crafts" section.

Has a certain " Mad Max" distressed look to it....
And you don't have to worry about scratching the finish !
If you like it...then I like it..Mad Max was cool !

I won't say whether I like it or not but I will say that rattle can paint is the absolute worst choice for a pistol. Once sweat, gun oil, dirt, and other contaminates work on that surface you're going to have a mess. You'll be lucky if it doesn't stick to your holster and make it very difficult to remove. I suggest you keep a rag handy and wipe it down more often than normal to prolong the mess.

Bubba used to camo paint shotguns and whatnot, - now you can get OEM painted camo or printed 'realtree' schemes.

Distressed or 'Battleworn' could be coming soon if not already here as an option for new guns.

It looks rather steampunk-ish

Reminds me of a Glock I saw at Gun Garage in Topeka this past weekend. Was painted like the American flag, slightly distressed, very slightly. It was a great paint job and looked really nice. Not something I'd want to use though. Kinda like the Gold plated limited edition Colt 1911 they had for 2 grand.

I remember when I was a kid. 16. My daddy had an old table that looked rather bad. I though I would fix it up. By the time I had sanded the ogee curve off of the edge I gave up. I didn't have the skills or the vision. This table was his great grandmothers. He never said a word and didn't offer to kill me. It became mine twenty years later. I was determined to fix it. I took it to a restorer in Houston and paid him 350 dollars to fix it. It's beautiful now. I wish my Dad had lived to see it. Sometimes we don't have the vision or the skills and we don't know it.
Keep trying, maybe someday you'll get there. In the mean time that thing is awful, but it's yours.

Only honest wear is cool in my book....I really like a gun with the bluing worn off and a few scratches from actual use.

Every ding is a reminder of a day in the field or on the range.

My 442 has a nice silver glow on the end of the barrel because it rides in an ankle holster every day...I dig it, no interest in trying to "fix" it.

As for the faux war-torn look? I applaud the effort, sure it was fun to customize your gun. It's your gun enjoy it.

Use to be guns had to only fear was bad fitting screwdrivers & dremel tools..........add rattle cans to the list.
