Skills over gear. It’s the archer not the arrow...

Imagine that. Guess you ain't "most people."

My accuracy test is hitting a paper plate at five yards without sights. That's what the gun is designed for, not a target gun. I installed an APEX carry trigger setup in mine, which makes it more comfortable for me.

Many cops and quite a few competition shooters use Glocks of every shape and size. My wife can consistently hit a 1 liter water bottle at 30 yards with her Glock 42. But I haven't found a Glock that lets me hit a barn three time in a row. While standing inside the barn.

Everybody has guns they are better or worse with and it's an individual thing. Don't be surprised if you shoot one better than another and always try a gun before buying it, if possible.

Jeff

When I went into cop work I carried, in order, a Colt trooper, Mark III Trooper, Smith 66 and a Smith 1076. I always took pride in shooting 98-100 on qual day and normally fired the last round as the buzzer was going off. I realized one day that I could get killed lining up for that perfect shot so I changed my drill to draw fast, shoot fast and expended several hundred rounds getting proficient. I still shot in the upper 90’s but my groups opened up some. I normally could take a nap between firing my last round in the string and the buzzer. I currently carry a Shield PC 9mm with an Apex flat faced trigger. If I take my time I can still shoot a ragged hole at 5 yards but even when I shoot fast everything is minute of bad guy. It’s a combat pistol not a target gun. People sometimes put too much emphasis on taking out the center of the target and not enough on self defense. Carry the Shield for what it is.

I had a similar experience when I first purchased a Shield.

My first weapon was a Glock 19, 4th Gen. After a few years, I wanted something smaller for CCW. I traded my Glock for a Shield.

To hold the weapon, it was lovely, and fit perfectly for CCW. But, shooting it was awful, and the web part of my hand hurt (various posts of this on this Forum about that).

Long story short, I traded the Shield for a Glock 23, 4th Gen.
Again, it felt too large for me, for CCW.

Just last week, I traded to a Shield 2.0. And prior to the trade, I had taken some Gun classes. All that to say, I handle the Shield must better now, and thus shoot better with it.

This weekend, I decided to rent some small pistols and try them out. I shot the Sig P365, Ruger LC9S, Glock 43, and just to see, a Shield.

Even though I'm much more familiar with the Shield, it was dead last on accuracy in comparison to the other three. I actually thought I would shoot it the best since I had experience with the model.

It seems as if most people find the Shield 9mm to be an accurate pistol, but I just never could improve much with it . Any ideas why I would shoot everything else better than the Shield?

I believe this is the key that could help anyone who is having problems. Take A Class, So You Can Be Observed, Critiqued and Helped By A Professional. Even someone who has been shooting for Decades can develop bad habits, or using old outdated techniques. Taking a 'refresher' class can be very beneficial. They are for me.

Practice does NOT make perfect if the person has basic flaws in their technique. Money spent on taking a class (even if it's simply a 'Basic Pistol' class) is money well spent.

Everyone is different and the same gun won't work for everyone. I've repeatedly tried to make the Shield my CCW, but no matter how much I practice with it, I can't hit squat and come back to my trusty Walther PPS M2 which I am "dead on balls accurate" with Simply put, go with what works for you.

I had a similar issue at first until I realized its a completely different trigger press for me vs my other handguns. The Shield is so thin, and I have large hands with longer fingers, it feels like I can just wrap the whole gun up in my hands...the trigger reach is a lot shorter...once I altered my trigger press and started focusing on trigger control, my accuracy increased a LOT.

To that end, shoot what you shoot well, but sometimes it takes a bit of tweaking to find the sweet spot (thats what she said)

This is modus operandi. I wish I could stop shooting low left on paper but steel plates 6" - 8" I can hit at 10-20 yards with a PC Shield with relative ease.

Side note-- the PC trigger is pretty nice, even more so at 2k rounds-- did you change just the trigger or other internals? How is it compared to the stock trigger?

It is a PC Shield so I saw no reason to do anything except the trigger. I wouldn’t want it any lighter.

I put an Apex sear on my first Shield, left the PC alone-- it is nice out of the box IMO. Did the trigger change the characteristics at all or just the feel against the finger?
