It depends on personal preference and applicability...
For self-defense, I lean toward 9mm and .380 semi-automatics for their compact size (Conceal Carry), and inexpensive ammo (especially reloading). But for hunting, I use a Ruger Super Redhawk (scope mounted) for its energy co-efficiency and pure power for larger game.

I'm still trying to make up my mind. I shoot 22 LR, 9mm, 40S&W, 44 Magnum, and 45 ACP. I'm also trying to distinguish between liking the gun and liking the caliber.

Is "all of them" too general an answer?
I love 1911s, and they have to be chambered for .45 ACP, so my favorite caliber in 1911 is .45 ACP.
My favorite revolver caliber is .44 special, BUT since I don't reload and don't plan to start, and factory ammo is expensive (especially if you have to pay for shipping) I just can't go that way. The only one I've ever owned that was even more difficult for me to find was a S&W Texas Wagon Train model in .44-40...beautiful revolver, but so frustrating trying to find ammo. This was some years ago, so it may be easier to find online now, but it wasn't then. By default, then, my favorite revolver caliber is .357/.38 for its utility and versatility, and you can find it virtually everywhere.
For carry and general all around gun fun, I'm going to say 9mm. It's inexpensive, comes in a good assortment of bullet weights and configurations, and widely available. Modern ammo performs acceptably too. I am getting ready to buy a M&P 2.0 Compact 9mm, for the best combination of portability, capacity, functionality, and range use.

As I have an equal number of 9mm's and 38 Specials in the safe, I guess it's a tie.

Having survived three deadly force encounters armed w/my issued .38 you could say it is my favorite due to an emotional attachment. I do own a Glock 17 & LCP, but my thirty-eight remains my go-to gun.

I own 9, 40, 45, and 22 caliber handguns.
But my favorite all time round for handguns (and anything else really) is the 22. It’s just too much fun. And very economical.

I have 38, 357, 44sp. 44Mag, 45 auto, 9mm and .22's. I carried a .357 for many years on duty .45 auto for many years on duty and now often carry a 9mm but I shoot all of them. I think that if I had to choose, I would say a .45auto followed by .44sp.

Serious doing business, it's .45 ACP.
But gosh I do like flame and smoke, and .44-40 with all the 3F you can cram in it is pretty awesome in its own right.

Choice by necessity
The loaded one in my hand when I need it.
In the continued search for diversity a M18 4", M10 2", Sig 1911 45 ACP, Para Elite 1911 45 ACP, and American Tactical Thunderbolt 1911 45 ACP have joined the herd. Continued examples of my inability to say no to a good price.

My favorite is the.357 mag. The kick, the sound, the flash, makes me love shooting them.

There is no real answer to this but if made to chose i would go 9mm for self defense, and 357 if i am out in the woods worried about 4 legged creatures.

I have 5 guns that shoot 9mm, but can't say its my fave. My 38 Super can be loaded real close to 357 mag velocity and I can carry 17 rounds in an easy shootin' 1911. Yeah. 38 Super gets my vote.

9mm. Cheap to shoot for paper. Defensive rounds that are available will get the job done. Easy to control. Every hand gun I have is a 9. Plus a couple of .22's.

My favorite cartridge has a lot to do with the platform that launches it.
.45 ACP out of a full size 1911 Government.
So satisfying to shoot and it doesn't beat you up.
Next would be the ubiquitous .22 long rifle 'cause cheap plinkin' is good clean fun.
My oldest daughter used to like .44 Mag best but she has fallen in love with my Springfield Armory TRP 1911.
This summer I'll let her shoot them side by side and see what the verdict is.

At my age I seem to shoot the 9mm best of all. Besides, I can use it in my M&P Shield and M2.0 as well as my Ruger carbine.
Added benefit, now only have to stock one caliber of ammo.

And they say the 38 special isn't popular anymore. Sure seems to be here.
