What is your favorite handgun caliber?
What is your favorite handgun caliber? It can be revolver or autoloader.
Mine is the 357 Magnum.
Because I can shoot a powerful round and also the wonderful 38 Special, police choice and a bad-guy stopper for many years, even when the 45 Colt round was available. You can shoot both with in a 357 Magnum revolver.
Next, 9mm.
Cheap, ubiquitous, autoloader that will get the job done. Still, not up to the 357 Magnum for power and versatility (i.e. 38 Special).
Please participate.
God bless,
Birdgun

Mine is 327 Federal Magnum.
A 327 FM revolver will shoot 32 S&W, 32 S&W Long, 32 H&R Magnum, 327 FM, and 32 ACP.
From mild to wild.

I like 357sig. A very hot 9mm that does cost more and have more recoil yet buying on line I have found some good prices on 357sig FMJ.

Without doubt my favorite handgun caliber is the 38 special. Extremely versatile caliber. Shotshells for pest control/snakes, plastic wadcutters & primer cap, 125gr all the way up to 170gr with every bullet style out there for every need.

I like a bunch of different calibers, but my favorite handgun caliber is .45 ACP.
Not sure why, I just like 'em.

Since I have various around, I am with the "what's at hand" crowd.
I do generally carry .45 ACP though.

Same as my answer on another sub-forum. I'm no longer able to hunt or walk the woods. There has been only one bear sighting in this city in many years. Everything I need a handgun to do, .38 Special does nicely.

Taken from the Book of Browning:
Chapter 1
1. In the beginning God created the .45Colt and He saw that it was good.
2. But He realized that the world was full of evil and the .45Colt was slow to reload. So He anointed and inspired His prophet, John Moses Browning, to create the .45Automatic Colt Pistol cartridge and its delivery system, the 1911. And God saw that it was good and that His children could now defend themselves more effectively against evil.

Me too. Because it is an efficiency optimized .45acp. Oooodles more ft-lbs m.e. than its near neighbors, and more magazine capacity than .460 Rowland.
I look it the full house 10mm this way: It is the largest cartridge, that when loaded to optimum pressure, is not too much for a standard size all steel 1911.
Small auto pistol: .40 S&W. Because it is the largest cartridge that can be chambered in a small pistol. The full house .40 Underwood yields same m.e. as Underwood 45acp +P.
Micro pistol: 9mm. Not exciting, but such are micro size.
Larger than standard pistol: .460 Rowland. Not very easy/comfortable to carry, but this cartridge is equivalent to the 45 acp loaded to optimal efficient pressure levels.
Yes, shot placement is critical, but if most of my shots will not land in tiny, central vital portion of the threat, I want the shot to have more than eh oomph.

My favorite is the 45 ACP, because 230 grains and bigger holes.
I also have a 357 magnum stainless revolver which has its own benefits.

For many years it was a .357 magnum revolver...I cc'd a 2.25" Ruger SP101 in .357 magnum for nearly 10 years.
Then I switched to 357SIG and carried a Glock 33 for about 7 years.
Since 2012, it's been the .45 acp...which is still probably my favorite overall CC caliber...but lately I've been playing around with .45 Colt round...which, in +P format...is quite a hoot to shoot!

The 38 Spl & 44 Spl are the ones I shoot the most...
But, boy do I like a .452 in ACP or Colt for doing anything.
Always a big hole!

.38/.357 followed by the 9. If cost wasn't an issue, the .40 S&W would be in second place.

With you all the way other than cost of .40 You can always buy.40 range ammo at Wal-Mart in Florida for no more than a buck or two from 9mm.. All day every day . Other states maybe not

Well by default I guess it must be .38, as that caliber fits more guns that I have. Six dedicated thirty eights and 4 .357s makes it my most popular round.

Depends on usage of course....
Don't want to shoot bears with a .38 or
Don't want to shoot people with a .44 mag.

Hands down, .44 Special is my favorite caliber. Every time I shoot one my .44 spl. I get a big smile on my face. I have loads that are mild to wild. It makes a great paper puncher with mild loads and it can be loaded to be a good defense round either, man or beast. Yes, it really is special.

My overall favorite would be the .22lr.
*Can be used in either semi-automatic pistols or revolvers.
* Very economical to shoot, you get more bangs for the buck stretching the
budget to allowing for more practice and plinking.
* Takes up little space & weight so a goodly amount can be carried with a small pistol or revolver (kit gun) in a backpack or with your fishing tackle.
* Good for taking small game & pests.
No, I would not use it as a defensive round unless forced to by circumstances, but the question was not what is your favorite carry or self defense round.

Mine is the unloved redheaded step child of the gun world...
The Remington 41 Magnum along with the model 58 S&W , it's my avatar. Casting and reloading for it maximizes versatility.

357/38 special if I could shoot mostly my own reloads.
If I have to go by the rules of the indoor range I am shooting at it would be 9mm because I have to shoot factory ammunition and it's the cheapest...
Third would be one of my 357 Sig's..

I'm 69 now, but growing up in Texas shooting SAA, it was the 32-20 my step father had with matching lever gun. Of course, there was 45 Colt everywhere.
Then came my true love, the 38/357, for 50 years. I still have beaucoup revolvers in that caliber and it goes on every outing. I have dozens of different recipes depending on the gun. I also loved the 44 magnum, and especially the 44 Special, when I loaded it to 38/357mag velocities (900-1100fps).
But in 2012, I won a GB auction for a 357 Magnum, but by total accident and seller ignorance, I got a new caliber. When I picked it up it said 357 Maximum. I started complaining and my gunsmith FFL said, "Shut up! You won the lottery." Shoot this one time and you will be hooked. Truer words were never spoken. The caliber was expensive when you could find it, so I restarted my handloading again. I now love handloading as a fun hobby.
So my caliber choice is BEST
I shoot the wonderful 38 special (700-1000fps), the awesome 357 Magnum (900-1350fps), and the perfect 357 Maximum (1400-1700fps) all in the same gun. How can you beat that? Hell fire when you load two of each in that sixgun at the same time.
Velocities up to 1800fps and much milder recoil than a 44 Magnum. Flat shooting out to 100 yards plus. It hits steel HARD.
I now have the 357 Maximum in T/C Contender and Encore, Seville, Rugers, Dan Wessons, and Magnum Research.
But I'm sure you guys will hate it. Don't buy it. It's horrible.
