Default 2.0 9mm 5" Comments and Questions

Edit: My concerts have been solved. I was using really cheap ammo. Protip: Don't use cheap ammo with 2.0 5"

I have a few comments, questions, and concerns. To preface, this is my first pistol I have owned. I mention this because these are probably silly concerns that are due to inexperience. There is a TLDR at the bottom

1. I LOVE MY 2.0 FDE 5”
I had a funday a few weeks ago shooting everything my local range had to offer. I shot about 12 different pistols. This was the pistol that gave me the biggest stupid grin on my face while firing. I knew it was the one.

2. FTFeed and FTEject issues:
First 100 rounds were using range ammo (sig sauer elite 115gr). It shot flawlessly. I had 1 FTFire. a super weak handed rack once which caused it not to go into battery, but that was my fault. My leo friend sent me a link to some cheap bulk ammo. I have shot a decent number of rounds out of his glock using the stuff so I trusted it. Have fun laughing at me when you look it up - MaxxTech 115gr.

Every 3rd round was either 45 degree failure to feed or the casing never ejecting resulting in a type II malfunction. I am just going to assume the ammo is horrible due to finding out the 2.0 5” is picky with its ammo. The ammo definitely feels very light. I ordered 7 different type of reputable ammo online that should arrive sometime next week so I can bang them out to verify. The stuff ranges from Remington white box to Federal.

3. Spring Setting:
When I disassemble the slide, I noticed that the spring doesn’t sit flush on the little guide shelf(?name?) that exists for it. It sits freely maybe 1mm above it. When I put it back together, I make sure the spring is sitting on the shelf. I racked the slide a few times and then disassembled it again. The spring moves off the tiny shelf back to just a hair above it.

Is this just how the spring sits or is this related to FTF/FTE issue above? I attached some pictures of what it looks like right after disassembly.

TLDR:

I love the pistol. I think I am stupid for purchasing cheap ammo (MaxxTech 115gr). Do you agree with the ammo being bad? Is my spring situation normal with how it rests above the guide shelf?

OK lets start by asking do you have the spring assembly in the correct orientation? If you do not have the silverish flat plate end sitting in the machined cradle at the back of the barrel then you have it wrong. It should be as shown in the two images I've attached of how mine is.. If you have it backwards this might just be the cause of your problems..

@hdskullfire2

That is exactly how it is setup before I put it back together. Once I assemble, rack it a few times, and disassemble it, the spring no longer sits on that half circle guide shelf/machined cradle seen in your picture one. It gets pushed upwards off of it (attempted to show in my pictures).

I will do my best to take better photos when I get home tonight.

If the recoil spring is moving, most likely you're not ensuring that the metal end is fully seated. You can get it partially seated and that would likely cause malfunctions.

I've heard people claiming that the 2.0 9mm doesn't like lighter weight slugs. I doubt that, am suspicious of "limp wristing" in your case.

While I have only shot about 220 rds out of mine, all common grain weights, zero malfunctions.

Nothing wrong with MaxxTec, it's just Tula/Perfecta in a different container. I've shot a lot of Perfecta in 9mm and some in .380. Cleaner shooting than Remington. Don

All 3 of my M&P's do like you describe your recoil spring, I think the "half moon" cut in the barrel is just to locate the spring end to facilitate assembly and the operating position is what you see when disassembling. Once it's together it can't come out of position. I think the cause of you malfunctions lie elsewhere.

@DonD

When I was at my range I brought this issue up to the RO. He initially commented limp wrist. I shot 10 rounds, 2 of them did 45* FTFeed. He said it didn't look like limp wrist. He commented about how the MaxxTech bullets sounded light and looked low on recoil. He gave me 2 of his reloads and the "bang" felt and sounded more close to the first 100 rounds of sig. He commented it possibly is the ammo.

Being my first pistol, I am probably just being paranoid and overly cautious.

@Bkreutz
That is a breath of fresh air. Last night I inspected everything again. I noticed that when the spring is sitting on the shelf, it isn't level. As in, the center of the spring isn't level/parallel with the slide. It maybe is about 5 degrees off vertical center. When the pistol gets racked, it probably forces the spring into "center" position. Resulting it it no longer sitting on said shelf when it is disassembled.

-----------

Going over other threads, someone mentioned ensuring the feed ramp is polished. The ramp is already polished, but I did notice that there was some powder/sludge/black-stuff on the feed ramp. It wasn't a simple 1 quick wipe. I had to brush a little with a qtip to get it off.

Maybe that was the problem? I cleaned it after the first 100 rounds. Maybe some oil got on the ramp and some powder sludged up on the ramp causing these issues. Ammo is coming mid next week, but I will try and hit up the range this weekend to try again. This is turning into an ordeal haha.

vgerik1234,
Welcome to the wild world of M&P pistols! Just that fact that you know what a Type II malfunction is puts you ahead of 90% of pistol owners. The explanation of your concerns was lucid and accurate. This allows us to properly address them. More often than not we get descriptions like this, "The thing that goes into that other thing isn't right. What's wrong?" So, this is a breath of fresh air.

There is nothing wrong with your gun. All semi-auto pistols with a mono block chamber design work like this. In fact, the only reason that 1/4 moon cut out exists in the barrel lug is to assist with assembling the barrel and recoil spring assembly (RSA) into the slide.

This is not the best picture, but it shows what's going on inside the gun when fully assembled:

When the gun is assembled and the take down lever is in the closed position, the flat portion of the lever is forward. This is what the RSA sits against and pushes on as the gun operates normally. So, as the slide moves, the RSA tends to migrate down toward the frame. This is good and part of the design. It actually helps hold everything together.

So, don't worry about the RSA not being flush with the notch in the barrel lug when you field strip the gun. They all do that.

About the failure to extract, this could be more of an issue. The M&P should work with any round you buy off the shelf. Alas, not all do. Let us know how it goes with the other rounds you've ordered.

Polishing the feeding ramp is one of those myths that has perpetuated throughout semi-auto history. It might help, but usually it only serves to make the user feel like they've done something. I've seen more guns damaged while trying this than I have seen improved.

If you polish the ramp, it won't hurt. But I must emphasize polish. Use something like Mother's polish to do it. Anything more aggressive or abrasive could alter the feed ramp and make things worse rather than better. Chances are the ramp is fine as it came from the factory.

hdskullfire2 (Steve),
Those pictures are HUGE! As I type this they are still loading and I have relatively fast internet. Consider resizing them. They don't need to be any bigger than 1,000 pixels wide.

consider having someone else shoot the pistol to see if they duplicate what you are seeing

@Rastoff

Awesome! Thank you so much for that.

@star1
My Leo buddy, who told me about the ammo, went to the range with me excited to shoot it. I was shooting his Glock 19 and 43 using the same ammo, so I am taking it on his word. On top of my issues I was having before passing it off to him, he said first 2 mags were 5 FTFeed and 1 FTEject (type ii). He stopped part way into the 3rd mag and said "I think I have a squib. I do not feel comfortable firing this thing. I just can't tell what is going to happen next." There was no squib, thankfully.

Everything is leaning to the ammo.

Try the Federal Red Box from Walmart. $18.87 for a 100 rds. Shoots great in all of my M&Ps.

@all

I just got back from the range after shooting 100 American Eagle Federal 115gr. My baby shot flawlessly. No issues. Nothing felt off. Everything felt perfect. I am going to chalk it down as 100% cheap ammo. I really appreciate everyone's help and guidance on my issue(s)!
